Boxing Helena

this is one of the funniest/campiest/silliest movies I have ever seen. Just screams for a John Waters commentary track. Bill Paxton as a bad-boy rocker in leather pants. Art Garfunkel as Art Garfunkel. Boobs a-plenty. A number of embarassing sex scenes. Loads and loads of Julian Sands whining. And in the end... *SPOILERS* it was all a dream!! LOL

Ha, I saw this at a sleepover in high school with a kid who later came out as gay. Not sure how I didn't realize it at the time, since after the movie we sat in his bedroom listening to his Madonna and William Orbit albums.

I saw (this) Lynch's other movie "Surveillance" and it was just as ridiculous, right down to its own stupid twist.

xp You got me, it was Lex.

― jaymc, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

this movie is one of the goofiest things I've ever watched

― and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

Bill Paxton as a bad-boy rocker in leather pants.

!

I have never seen this movie, there was something very off-putting about it.

Paxton does two things in this movie: 1) has hilarious fake sex while wearing a shag "rocker" wig, 2) looks anguished/tortured

unfortunately GIS turns up nothing for Paxton, but it does return gems like this

most disappointing thing about this movie is that Helena is never actually put into a box

I think Crating Helena would be an even more off-putting name

This second clip features Paxton's band in full-on Devo mode, btw. Dude has music in his blood!

I'm pretty sure Kim Basinger had to pay millions in damages when she backed out of this. Good call, Kim.

― clemenza, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

Just double-checked: eight million, but it was overturned on appeal.

― clemenza, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

did I mention that there's a sex scene set to Enigma's "Sadeness"

― Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 September 2010 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

And you dismiss The Room for looking "terrible"?

― Nano McPhee (admrl), Thursday, 16 September 2010 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

In a rare moment of comity, the audience and my group were in hysterics through most of this -- I mean, like, pointing at the screen and laughing.

fifteen years pass...

2026 update: this film predates the look and feel of AI-generated "content" by three decades. Also everyone has amazing hair, especially Art Garfunkel. Did papa Lynch ever express an opinion on it?

― grobbing thistle (Matt #2), Wednesday, 9 September 2026 18:32 (one month ago)

I forgot this movie existed. In one of those occurrences that feels a lot stranger to me now than it did at the time, my sister's boyfriend's mom lent me the VHS (which she owned?!) when I was like 16. I don't remember a whole lot about the movie itself. I may not have even watched the whole thing.

― cryptosicko, Wednesday, 9 September 2026 18:43 (one month ago)

I always intended to watch this, but honestly can't remember if I did. I do remember it getting some of the most savage reviews imaginable.

― clemenza, Wednesday, 9 September 2026 18:48 (one month ago)

Quick check of Wikipedia: Janet Maslin and Gene Siskel defended the film.

― clemenza, Wednesday, 9 September 2026 18:49 (one month ago)

Damn! I don't even remember S&E reviewing it, and I watched them religiously at the time.

― cryptosicko, Wednesday, 9 September 2026 18:49 (one month ago)

Oh! Turns out they never reviewed on the show, but Gene selected it as a Video Pick of the Week.

Honestly it's pretty amazing, can recommend

― grobbing thistle (Matt #2), Wednesday, 9 September 2026 18:56 (one month ago)

For a guy who did relatively few films, Art Garfunkel's filmography is pretty adventurous: this, Carnal Knowledge, Catch-22, Bad Timing.

― clemenza, Wednesday, 9 September 2026 18:59 (one month ago)

Julian Sands in the nude vibing to "Sadeness (Part 1)."

― boners for bombs (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 9 September 2026 21:17 (one month ago)

Diary of Laura Palmer is a masterpiece and I read it decades after seeing this piece of garbage movie, it was startling

― sookie stackhausen (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 10 September 2026 02:13 (one month ago)

Not forgetting his reunion with Paul in Woody Tobias Jr.'s 2009, Jupiter and Beyond

― Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 12 September 2026 01:59 (one month ago)

my feeling is Art Garfunkel saw doing films as a chance to get laid.
