Which is Worse: Being Told You're Not Funny, or Unintentionally Funny

It happens to everyone. You tell a joke, you tell funny stories in public, in your head they're hilarious, only to be met by blank stares and be told "dude, you AIN'T funny", and you get embarrassed.

Scenario 2, you're sitting at a bar having a serious conversation with someone and making a point you think is insightful and valid, and everyone cracks up. "Man, you funny, even if you're not trying to be", lampooning what you just said.

Which is more of a jab to the ribs?

dammit second option should say "unintentionally funny"

turn in yer badge (San Te), Friday, 17 September 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

scenario 2 happens a lot i figure, it's just general "lightening the mood" kinda shit. scenario 1 i've never seen happen but it's pretty ice cold.

tbh i have trouble taking "you're funny" as a compliment from some people -- e.g. co-workers -- it sounds like code for "you are strange and i don't understand you"

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 17 September 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

between the two, I voted second, mostly cuz everyone has an 'unfunny' moment every now and then, but it's kind of icy to feel that you're not being taken seriously or being 'laughed at'.

If someone says "you're funny," it means you probably aren't – if you were actually funny the compliment giver would be laughing, imo.

always being "unintentionally funny" would suck but everyone has those moments, right? and it's no big deal to tell someone they're unintentionally funny.

whereas people who think they're funny but are JUST NOT are kinda the bane of my life, i genuinely hate them.

basically "you're unintentionally funny" basically = "lol at you but you're still great". "you're not funny" = "PLEASE STFU NOW"

ehhh delete a basically

I don't know, sometimes making a funny joke without even realizing it is pretty cool, though often I'll just pretend that I did intend to make the joke

what annoys me the most is when I make what I think is a funny joke and people just respond completely seriously to me not even realizing it was a joke. I guess the fact that I generally have a completely deadpan delivery for my jokes doesn't really help.

I have an absolute terror of being laughed at, so #2.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 17 September 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

pretty much every time i've heard the first one it was meant as "just please stop talking, in general" (and mercifully i don't think this was ever directed at me)

Very few people in the world seem to share my sense of humour so 1 is pretty common for me. But as Lex points out it's infuriating in others so I'd find it worse probably. (& I really fucking hate when I think I've made a hilarious funny and someone is just like "you are creepy/weird/etc.")

but actually 2 happens to me all the time & I've learned to kind of roll with it because I don't understand humour at all. Many has been the time I've been at a party of drunk or stoned people and they will not stop laughing at what I'm saying even when I don't think I'm being funny at all. It's perplexing but not as bad because it's unintentional.

This is my tactic.

sometimes when people start laughing at something serious I said I shoot them a lethal look like Tom Sizemore in the diner scene in Heat...then crack my knuckles, one at a time.
