What are the demographic quirks of ILE, once you control for 'highly educated'?

As in - assume a second message board called JLE, whose random selection of regular posters have by happy chance the same average level of education as ILE. How does that board most likely differ from this one?

I was thinking about this because of the religion and middle school threads - I'd be very surprised if the 'JLE' posters had enjoyed a much more positive slate of experiences aged 11-14. On the other hand, onimo on the religion thread suggested that they'd probably be less atheistic, as religious ILE posters are either driven away before they register, or cowed into silence (PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE THAT FIGHT IN THIS THREAD, THANK YOU).

How else might that board differ? Presumably there might also be more 'out' republicans, or at least Tories, but it might be that there, as here, it wouldn't reach a level where they felt happy to talk about their views. (I don't personally think this is true fwiw - I'd imagine ILX is a long way to the left of a randomly chosen group of highly educated people).

I'm deliberately using ILE here rather than ILX because of the huge ILM influence - but what effects are correlated with 60%+ of posters also being music nerds? Etc etc...

This board is heavily male. My wife posts on a mostly female mb where nearly everyone has a graduate degree. That board seems to place great emphasis on everyone getting along and not being negative--exactly like it is here.

Drastic times require what? Drastic measures! Who said that? T (President Keyes), Saturday, 18 September 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

That's a great point - I hadn't even thought of that! Is this a result of ILM too, do you think, or just arbitrary and then self-reinforcing?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 18 September 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

it's a result of ilm

Music nerdery is a male thing isn't it? Kind of a collector's instinct about it. I was also going to suggest that it'd bring a certain solitude/individuality/reflectiveness (according to taste) too, but that's probably inherent in all boards - JLBeingAPartyAnimal probably doesn't get much traffic.

ile itself is a result of ilm and there used to be a lot more women about i'm sure

Yeah - there's a lot of stuff that just *being a board on the internet* already controls for! Like, lots of well educated people work high-powered business jobs, but they probably don't talk about it on the internet all day.

the ile average income is probably somewhat lower than would be expected (controlling for age also)

i'd imagine the average age would be about the same as, i dunno, a vbb for civil engineers or jungian psychology

If the hypothetical JLE had a higher representation of engineers, it would have a much higher number of libertarian-leaning participants.

As a technical writer, I discovered that this political philosophy was very popular among the electronics hardware engineers at my company, I presume because it treats human activity and motives as if they were a known equation, where the outputs could be predicted, based on the inputs.

I expect ILE's strong connection with ILM weights this board toward people whose education and sympathies lean toward the liberal arts and fine arts.

I don't see that being a music nerd is a particularly male thing but I think males more easily find their way into communities like this one that allow them to express and indulge that
