I'd say Oak Park, IL, over Evanston.

maybe it lacks plenty of parking

Cheap holiday in someone else's misery?

ashland isn't a suburb

sam acre, Saturday, 18 September 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

that's what makes it so cool

Montclair isn't really that special; it's just a cute little town. So is Collingswood, so is Madison, etc. etc.

My favorite suburban getaway (not on the list) is Warwick, NY. Its beautiful there and one cafe has the best chai I've ever tasted. Its on the edge of my hometown of West Milford, NJ.

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Sunday, 19 September 2010 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

It would take a lot of self control to come to the Bay Area and focus only on Alameda.

Maltodextrin, Sunday, 19 September 2010 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

i've only been to Montclair and West Hartford of all of these towns. Montclair is kinda cute ...

Carmine Dirtnap Returns!! (Eisbaer), Sunday, 19 September 2010 05:36 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah, Montclair's nothing special ... unless your only impression of NJ is "Jersey Shore" or the opening credits to "The Sopranos"

Alameda has decent food/booze/weather but the omnipresence of annoying rockabilly cats/betty page types gets old very fast.

Alameda has an awesome tiki bar, a mexican place that's open til 3am, and the antique flea market (which yeah, is way overpriced) - but it is a reminder of all the "nice things" that we can't have in Oakland.

People who spend their vacations in suburbs: Classy, Icky, or Dudes?

I once had a couple Bellevue peeps, one of whom is a gabbneb clone is such a thing has ever existed, try to convince me that there is more to do in Bellevue than Seattle.

The Reverend, Thursday, 23 September 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't lived in Seattle since '93, but unless they bulldozed Bellevue and started over, no. It all looked like a huge 80s office park complex.

I live in one of these. I like it enough to live here, but I certainly wouldn't have called it one of the top ten in the nation. Certainly better than Bellevue though. When my wife and I were in Seattle for a week, we spent the last half in a hotel out there because it was a lot cheaper than our first hotel downtown. Such a boring place.

I love Lakewood, Ohio.

kate78, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

This does not sound like a selling point to me:

This onetime sleepy suburb of Seattle (just across Lake Washington) has undergone a flash of development in recent years, including the completion of the Bravern, a massive high-end shopping, office, and condo complex where Microsoft has taken space.

Can't stand city names that start with "The" (El Paso and Los Angeles, excepted.)

the only thing Bellevue has going for it imo are some really great Indian restaurants.
