Cuba and Turkey (this may happen by the end of the year so if I stay alive through December I have a shot at this).

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

Technically I've been to Turkey already, but it was for work, was only for twenty-four hours, and I spent all of it in meetings in our hotel. Istanbul looked utterly fabulous and frankly I'm owed a trip back.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

dude (del), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Shakey Mo, what interests you about going to Iran?

Persian culture is just so ANCIENT. also always been kinda fascinated by Freya Stark's travelogues from the region. Jungles, deserts, crazy architecture, a culture that's been more or less "closed" to the west for generations - I dunno seems like it has a lot to offer.

xp

do you feel me? somebody, feel me (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

lightning wrangler extraordinaire (Matt D), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

My dad just went to Latvia & Sweden earlier this year and it's weird to me that there are all these places all over the world that are Not Here and where people and their lives are different, and you can get there by getting on a plane...?!?!??!??! NO WAY.

I am not a traveler.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm too big a chicken to set foot in Mexico. I know there are safe places there and that all I hear is the bad news, but you couldn't pay me to go there now.

Vietnam is amazing. Super expensive to get to compared to its neighboring countries but easily my favorite SE asian country.

(ie, I toured the entire country and would w/o question return)

sin cafe?

Zeno, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

What did you think of Hue, Steve?

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

tbh Hue was my least favorite place in Vietnam. The food gets talked up in a major way but the city is bleak and it was the only place in Vietnam where I wasn't left alone/given space/unwanted attention by hustlers. I took a couple of my favorite photos there but other than that, neighboring Hoi An is way more charming and people are friendly and I preferred Hoi An's cuisine to Hue which is near-sacrilege to Vietnamese foodies.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe I should expand on a partial thought there: nearly everywhere I went in Vietnam, I was left alone to wander and explore and people were really cool and nice but only when I went out of my way to ask for assistance (a little French is beneficial in the North as well). But in Hue, people were either angling me or crowding me when I was doing just fine getting from pt. a to pt. b (god bless google maps mobile btw) and it was a little out of character compared to my experiences everywhere else. It happened on a few occasions in 2 days in Hue.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmm, interesting.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

I've got a Vietnamese friend (w/family near Hanoi) and if I ever went, I'd definitely want to go with him.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

con suelo, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

Actually it was Mauritius I was thinking about, never mind.

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)
