It depends on eating trends. Our current box of cereal ("puffins") has been sitting opened on top of the fridge for about 3 weeks. Sometimes we blow through one in a couple days, but mostly longer than a week.

I feel like cereal only lasts a day or two around here and I'm trying to figure out of that's weird. It seems like there's only about 4 bowls of cereal per box.

Well, it depends on how many different boxes of cereal are in.

Alice liked the CocoRocks unless it's a BreadandHoney morning.
Amber is mostly Cookie Crisp.
Myself and wife alternate between Cranberry Wheats, muesli, etc.

Hard to say. The two cereals I have in my pantry right now, although I buy them both pretty regularly, are definite outliers. Shredded Spoonfuls, at 24 oz., lasts well over a week; Nature's Path granola, at 11.5 oz., lasts about three or four days. I'd say most other cereals are around six days.

FYI: I am the only one in my household who eats cereal, but I eat it 6-7 days a week.

I don't think I skimp on the serving size, either. More often than not, I'll add some more cereal when I'm done to soak up the remaining milk.

jaymc, Thursday, 23 September 2010 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

good question cause i'm addicted to cereal - 2 days maximum

if the four brothers are home and there's all night videogame or music sessions or whatnot then < 24 hours

more normally, don't usually buy them but probably around the fortnight mark. a kilo of porridge oats lasts about a month i think.

I alternate between muesli and bran flakes, and only one person shares the latter box. I have no real idea how long they last, possibly 8/9 days each? BTW anyone who votes <24 hrs is probably a stoner...

Parents, look out for these signs that your child may be a stoner:

  • videogames
  • loud music
  • box of cereal lasts less than 24 hours

quality query. generally a week

the 'special' one (con suelo), Thursday, 23 September 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

Cereal lasts a long time here because I'm the only one who eats it, and I only eat it when I don't have the time or inclination to make something more substantial for breakfast. I always think I would like to eat cereal as a snack, but I don't eat very many snacks, so a lot of times, cereal gets stale before I finish a box. Or there will be half a bowl left in the box, which isn't enough for breakfast, and I don't buy more because I think "There's cereal in the cupboard" and it's a vicious cycle, really.

Jenny, Thursday, 23 September 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

There's always way less cereal in a (new) box than there should be. I mean the boxes are on the skinny side, then you take out the inner bag and that's half full.... bah.

^ this is true but at least the in the U.S. a lot of food companies changed how they packaged their products during the recession so they wouldn't have to drop prices. Things like putting a bigger indentation in the bottom of the peanut butter jar so the jar looks like it's the same size it's always been but it contains less peanut butter. So I think it's also possible that a box of cereal contains less actual cereal than it did a few years ago.

I wish I was a stoner so I had an excuse to get through a box of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes every day.

xxp cereals are sold by weight in the UK, but OTOH who really checks that? "oh it says 700g on the pack but last month it was 750g" or "oh it says 750g on the pack but I weighed the contents and it was only 697g"

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

waaaay too long. i'll buy a pack and get bored with it after two bowls and get something else. (Cannot do this with Sugar Puffs as they stick together in nasty clumps but everything else is fair game.)
