How do you conceptually map your toes to your fingers?

baby toe is obviously pinky finger, right?
but is the big toe really your thumb?
If you were gonna point at something with your foot, it'd be the big toe,
so is the big toe the pointer finger?
Then if you were gonna give someone the bird, you'd use the second toe.
But then what is the actual middle toe?
Third and fourth toes become an undifferentiated toe mass. Can you even distinguish between them?

Big toe is thumb because of

imo. And god forgive me for posting that.

Laterally symmetrical, thumb to big toe and etc. Sometimes if I stub my toe or hurt a finger, I unconsciously favor the corresponding other digit. Brains are weird #905689459034590.

i mean if most of you jabbed one of your fingers with a thumbtack, you'd know pretty much which finger it was,
but how many of you could ID which toe got jabbed without looking? (not counting the shopping and crybaby piggies who are the Lennon/McCartney of the toes)

Big toe, 2nd/3rd/4th toe, pinkie toe.

This is a very weird thread. Are you sure Kenan or Tuomas hasn't taken control of your mind?

I don't?

WIth the rise of foot-mittens, I believe our days of not mapping toes to fingers are numbered.

abbott otm. sometimes when i'm really high i will stare at my feet until they resemble weirdly deformed hands and i feel connected to my primate heritage.

I've got double jointed toes and can actually hold a pen and sort-of write.

"rise of foot-mittens"
whoops! i mean foot gloves with individuated toe slots. foot-mittens would just be regular gymsocks, completely obscuring the toe-finger connection.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 24 September 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

they make those, too, as "flip flop socks." horror of horrors.

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 24 September 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

are these flip flop socks? they seem to be mapping your toes to a lobster claw rather than your fingers.

A colleague recently got a pair of Vibram Five Fingers shoes, which fit the foot-mitten brief I guess. Some observations:

1. Why are they called Five Fingers rather than Five Toes? Vibram co. clearly on the sharp edge of the conceptual mapping meme.
2. Fricking expensive, I think she paid about £90 for them.
3. When on they look srsly creepy. Like a depilated sasquatch foot or some shit.

Those look handknit Phil! Socks like that are called tabi socks & the color makes that pair especially Zoidberg-style.

Third and fourth toes become an undifferentiated toe mass.

There's actually a reason why the big and little toes are the only ones people are aware of without looking at them, but I can't remember what it is.

(The sense that allows you to distinguish between parts of your body and know where they are without looking at them is called proprioception, BTW.)

They're part of Japanese traditional dress. They're worn with zori (I think that's the right term).

Yeah i love this thing. Read about it in an Oliver Sacks book. The thing is you know where your body's mapped and dont have to look down at it to confirm this. The brain just works it out. In some ppl this fails - B6 overdoses will do it as they damage the nervous system - and then you cant go anywhere without looking like a fall-down drunk cos you don't know what yr limbs are up to. Frightening!

I adore this thread title. It's never occurred to me to do this, but I'm glad it has to someone.

one month passes...

Which days of the week map to which finger?
Is the thumb Monday, or is it Friday?
Would you be loathe to call the pinky Friday, being such a frivolous finger, or do you think it appropriate?
The ring finger does feel very Thursday though. This could be a problem...
