my gurl and i absolutely adore dressing up in costumes that we perfect over weeks or months and are in our 30s now so going out to bars isn't what it used to be (not to mention expensive + cabz) so for the last couple of years we have had a party on the saturday that is on or closest to halloween. but last year we had a horrible turn out with only 8 people showing up, so my question is this: are halloween parties dud cuz everyone and their mom has one or are they awesome cuz you get to dress up and hang out with yr fave dudes?

LOVE halloween parties and i look forward to it all year

classic as all hell. Halloween is probably my favorite holiday. I went as Leatherface two years in a row, then last year, due to a lost bet to my now-ex girlfriend, I had to dress up in a sexy female nurses costume.
considering I had a beard and mustache at the time I made for one ugly woman, but won the costume contest in a landslide.

Don't like, don't like the pressure to be creative/clever/noteworthy with costume choices, to out-do other people in some way. Always forget that it's coming up until the date is practically upon us, tbh.

I don't mean to harsh the vibe! Maybe I can catch some of the love itt for the institution of the Halloween Partay.

We are having our first Halloween party this year for my son and his friends. The theme is going to be Luigi's Haunted Mansion. I'll be dressing as Luigi, my son as Mario, my wife as Princess Peach, and our cat as a Koopa. It's going to be awesome!
― Moodles, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 14:45 (fifteen years ago)
amazing fun! used to house them every year and have half of Hitchin turn up. Now I've moved to a smaller house, so it's not possible any more, but instead we're putting on a Halloween party in a club! :-)
― village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)
Classic! Though I never get round to fixing a costume in time and always look a bit half-assed.
― seandalai, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)
Like the idea very much in theory; never been to one, wouldn't know.

like the idea in theory but i've never been to a good one.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)
Really would rather fall naked into stinging nettles than have anything to do with hallowe'en/dressing up. Suspect that this aversion of what many people find fun is due to a combination of (a) overweening self-consciousness (b) tendency towards being carnaptious and (c) fear of masks generally. Not that fussed, it is still easy enough to avoid ("Do you want to come to a hallowe'en party?" "Thank you very much for the invite, but I can't.").
― calumerio, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)
are we talking strictly halloween house parties here, or are we including events at clubs / bars / etc?
because tbh i find the latter to be more exciting and fun
― tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)
I used to feel that way too, but I'm trying to overcome that. I hated Halloween for a long time due to a childhood full of lousy costumes and depressing parties/trick or treating. Now that I have a child, it is becoming fun again.

i find it more fun to make my own costumes out of what I have than buying prepackaged ones. usually serial killer-esque deals with lots of blood.

homemade costumes >>> readymade costumes
always

u can escape into the world of the imagination iirc

I kind of disagree. Homemade may be better if you have some skill at that kind of thing, but my homemade costumes tend to come out terribly. I've pretty much given up on it.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)
it depends what you're doing. if your costume is a Matisse painting I can see where that might be difficult....
― officer i didn't know it was a penguin (San Te), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)
Even something simple is difficult for me, but that's just a reflection of my own lack of costume skillz.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)
you can still have a fun, clever costume that doesn't require a lot of skill or that requires no fabrication / construction at all. thrift store costumes are awesome! even if you just show up in a hawaiian shirt, bucket hat, and cigarette holder and say you are hunter s thompson, it's leagues better than if you bought your pimp costume in a sealed plastic bag imo
― tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:49 (fifteen years ago)
plus the range of costumes you can buy is pretty limited ime, why be limited by commercial options when the only real limit is your ~imagination~
― tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)
I hate imagination.

one time I dressed up as Lou Pearlman. I just robbed a bunch of candy from kids all night then let people in cop costumes take me away.
― officer i didn't know it was a penguin (San Te), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know when I got this hatey, I've sewn floor-length red hooded capes, sewn and stuffed devil horns with cotton balls and attached them to a headband, created giant wind-up toy keys with aluminum foil and spice containers, and done all kinds of costuming over the years. At some point I ran out of steam, I guess.
Floor-length capes are FUN to wear, though, I really have to admit. Do you think I could be LRRH again at my age?
― I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)
used to love them but after i threw up all over myself the last time i was at one i realized its never a good idea to drink yourself silly in a mask.
― chrisv2010, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)
it's never too late to restart. I went from age 17-24 without dressing up, then started again
― officer i didn't know it was a penguin (San Te), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)
im taking my two yr old out this year. He wants to be Buzz Lightyear and my wife suggests I go as Woody to take him around the neighborhood....I dont think so.

yea, I'd go as the Etch a Sketch

wow so you guys are basicly confirming what i already knew. halloween house parties are not crap and those notions otherwise can suck it. thinking of bubba hotep perhaps for my costume this year and a 'no costume no problem' policy rather than being strict and not all-inclusive. also calumerio thx for a new word: carnaptious will use
― a bit of a cliche (jdchurchill), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)
people w/o costumes will be allowed into my halloween parties but i will lose respect for them tbh

last time i had fun with it just did the classic sheet ghost costume. that and capes are mad fun on the dancefloor. i usually go the route of whacking something together with whatever's sitting around the house, been a stick in the mud about it past couple years though. once i wrapped myself in white poster boards and said i was a glass of milk
― capybara picture show (another al3x), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
Thinking of being Dr Jacoby from Twin Peaks. Just need red-and-blue granny glasses.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

― latebloomer, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
Thinking about finding some event if only to use a cheap costume idea that's been floating around my head for ages (red necktie, bowler hat, granny smith and some fishing line = Magritte's "Son of Man").

Okay we are having a Halloween party this year since we finally have a house. The catch is we aren't huge socializers usually (I haven't been to a house party in years and years) and our groups of friends are all a bit disparate. So I am nervous about this and want it to be not-lame.
So far I have decided to make mulled wine because it's autumn, and have music, and other alcohol, and halloweeny snacks. And costumes obv (not mandatory tho since I know some people hate that). But that doesn't seem like much does it? What are the funnest things to do/have for halloween?
I guess what I'm saying is please help me plan a good halloween party.

we usually have the movies on too, although nobody has made a comment to me about them (enjoy or otherwise) but i too would appreciate some good ideas for our impending halloween party. we usually make a bunch of food with halloween theme like last year we did these pretzels that are made to look like fingers or toes (martha stewart recipe) and i tried my hand at popcorn balls which you had to be superhuman to eat. i tried to build a giant spider from pvc and papier mache but that was a disaster as well. this year i think i am going to get a cross-fader thingy and let dudes play dj between rekkids and cds, and like set up a dj booth area. also we thought it would be pretty dope to have a fire going in our backyard but we live on the third floor so that is on the back burner (pun)
