I'll be making a total nuisance of myself for the next couple of days quoting Sweet Smell of Success. "You've got such contempt for people, J.J., it makes you stupid."

He could've been a great actor.

Oh, sad news. One of the few programmes I watched on ITV back when was The Persuaders. We used to run around pretending to be him and Roger Moore. http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/051021/95253__tcurtis_l.jpg

In recent years, Jamie Lee has made it sound like the closest character he played to himself was the Boston Strangler.

I've got to sneak one in over lunch:
"Don't be a two-time loser, Sidney--the penalty could be severe." (Lancaster's line, but good enough.)

that's sad, I'll miss him turning up on the One Show and stuff like that.

Was gonna say how great he is in Boston Strangler :(

RIP -- in some great movies. worst thing was seeing him hosting those weird hollywood babylon kinda things on vh1 in the mid-90s? anyone remember that? They had horrible reenactments of hollywood scandals, and then tony would tell a corny anecdote at the end.
― tylerw, Thursday, 30 September 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
RIP. persuaders theme song pretty much the best thing ever.
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 30 September 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)
That Guardian URL is weird.
Don't know much of his work, to be honest, but LOVE him in 'Sweet Smell of Success': so sweaty and queasy and panicked and, at least there, good-looking. Also love 'Boston Strangler' and 'Some Like it Hot'.

Fire up the DVRs...
Turner Classic Movies will run a 24-hour marathon of 12 Tony Curtis movies on Sunday, October 10th. (In fact, Tony once joked that TCM stands for Tony Curtis Movies.) The movies to be shown are Beachhead (1954), Kings Go Forth (1958), The Vikings (1958), Operation Petticoat (1959), Who Was That Lady? (1960), Sex and the Single Girl (1964), You Can’t Win ‘Em All (1970), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), The Defiant Ones (1958), Trapeze (1956), The Great Race (1965), Don’t Make Waves (1967).

Was this guy good? I just saw Spartacus on the big screen, in which he mostly stands around looking pretty. He’s more appealing in The Vikings where he has a certain degree of chemistry with his IRL wife (Janet Leigh)
― Josefa, Sunday, 14 November 2021 02:35 (four years ago)
Btw The Vikings is very uncomfortable to watch in light of the recent Kirk Douglas revelations. It seems as if he’s putting his id on the screen in the person of his viking character.
― Josefa, Sunday, 14 November 2021 02:46 (four years ago)
Best performance easily Sweet Smell of Success. Warning: highly quotable!

I kinda prefer TC to JL in Some Like It Hot.
― Milm & Foovies (Eric H.), Sunday, 14 November 2021 03:11 (four years ago)
I like the idea of The Persuaders, and yes, a great theme tune, but I’m not sure it’s worth watching the whole way through. Watched two episodes and it seems a bit campy. But I’m open to trying again.

Josefa, he is NOT an epic dude. Contemporary films only.
