My mom would never let us have this game because we played it "too loud" at my aunt's house.

Also she never let me go to the arcade.

We couldn't have it either cos my parents were sure we would break the plastic parts and/or lose all the special white marbles. RIP my childhood dreams.

I like games like this for kid, games that are like "just do one thing over and over" and don't really require any skill.

There are four hippos in the game: Lizzie Hippo (purple), Henry Hippo (orange), Homer Hippo (green), and Harry Hippo (yellow). In some versions of Hungry Hungry Hippos, Henry is replaced by a blue hippo of the same name. A later edition of the game replaces the purple hippo, Lizzie, with a pink one named Happy. The most recent edition of the game (purchased in December 2009) has a lighter blue base with pastel colored versions of the Hippos: Sweetie Potamus (pink), Bottomless Potamus (yellow), Picky Potamus (orange), and Veggie Potamus (green).

Other games we weren't allowed to have included (but were not limited to): Operation, Life, Mousetrap, Lite-Bright.

"Veggie Potamus"? I thought they all just ate marbles.

I've never seen that big arcade version before, how big is it?

Maybe this gives some idea of scale?

see, that's the problem with games today; too much emphasis on strategy, too little flicking of objects

del griffith, Friday, 1 October 2010 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

This game is the purest neoliberal propaganda.

Knew you'd show up on this thread to pour scorn...

HHH and crossfire were two of my most desired games as a kid. also this one game where you 'fished' that had these cool fish whose mouths were always pointed upwards and eternally open.

banaka you fuckin goof, the hippos represent the worker and the marbles represent the means of production, jesus do we have to spell everything out for you here

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:04 (fourteen years ago)

you are mistaken. the hippos are the workers, trying to get their "piece of the pie". their is no co-operation involved.

banaka, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:16 (fourteen years ago)

there
there
there

banaka, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:18 (fourteen years ago)

error

banaka, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:18 (fourteen years ago)

it's the cooperation of the multitude, it doesn't have to involve any facile give-and-take - the pie which is made of marbles belongs to the hippos, the bosses think they can hoard the marbles but now it's payback time, I should have known you'd try to hold down the pro-hippo contingent you fascist

Loved this game as a kid...especially if you played it frantically enough that the balls would shoot off the table in all directions. Pretty sure at least half of those little plastic balls ended up in Mum's vaccuum cleaner. Only downside was that later on the parts got a little worn out and the hippos would sort of squeak and it got kind of unpleasant to play. But general theory of the game is sound: the louder & more frantic the better.

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:29 (fourteen years ago)

utilizing "hippos who are hungry" as the game's scenario is indicative of a deliberate choice to promote individualist gluttony at the expense of the whole. if milton bradley were trying to promote the struggle for worker autonomy, why not choose another motif? utilizing "hippos who are hungry" as the game's scenario would seem a counterproductive method of propaganda for this purpose.

banaka, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:39 (fourteen years ago)

that's the game's playful marxist irony - the hippos do not actually hunger, but behave as if they did so as not to appear ungracious to their still-starving brethren, the crocodiles & the secretary birds

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:42 (fourteen years ago)

hhh varient: for a change of pace remove the hippos heads and use their necks to reject marbles, one who eats the most marbles loses

ice cr?m, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:46 (fourteen years ago)

i guess its called 'full hippos' i dont know i never named it

ice cr?m, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:47 (fourteen years ago)

"grim endless reality" variation: remove & dispose of marbles so hippos cannot eat; players must continue game until someone somehow scores at least one point

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

xxx-post

intriguing. but even if this conjecture proved to be true, to us it indicates nothing more than milton bradley/hasbro's attempt to appeal to self-styled revolutionaries. in other words, stealth marketing.

a red game board does not equal socialist politics.

banaka, Sunday, 3 October 2010 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

neither does posting in a 'red' way

i feel like the only time I saw this game for sale was at flea markets but it was awesome
the fish mouths would open and close with some regularity though
