Contains blood and stuff, what the hell were these folks thinking?
― Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:24 (fourteen years ago)
Thankfully this has been withdrawn by the 10:10 organisers. Just can't understand how they thought that this film would win anyone over.
― Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:27 (fourteen years ago)
Article here, but I'm still too fucking gobsmacked to read it:

Haha wow. I can see what he was thinking (they bring up Python in the article) but a Python skit would never have used that much gore! Couldnt they just vanish them in an explosion of smoke? Yeesh.

Might have worked if it was just them blowing up Ginola cos tbh he had it coming after those shampoo adverts, but shit me, you do not need to possess preternatural foresight to glom onto the fact that campaigners blowing up school children might just alienate a few folks.
― Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:54 (fourteen years ago)
I'm certainly not offended by it, but how was this supposed to work in advertising terms? The people who you're supposed to be supporting are depicted as hostile, bullying twats - surely it's more likely to play into 'reject the hivemind, sheeple' reactions than 'oh yes, that seems like a good idea, I'll join in' ones?
― emil.y, Sunday, 3 October 2010 21:17 (fourteen years ago)
environmentalists are the worst. i say that being not at all opposed to the politics per se, as i'm too ignorant to support or oppose.

Really? The worst? So, like, worse than St0rmfr0n7 and the KKK?
― emil.y, Sunday, 3 October 2010 21:28 (fourteen years ago)
The two things that really bother me are first the diservice it does to ordinary campaigners who get portrayed as militant psycho nutjobs, and secondly, people are already getting busted for protests under anti-terror legislation. This shit just helps makes it easier for the police to paint folks into that corner.
Maybe they were aiming for the sort of shock value that some of the old anti-nuclear films had, but I don't remember the CND pipebombing your neighbours in those. This is more reminiscent of the terrible PR that certain lunatics bring to the animal rights movement.
― Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Sunday, 3 October 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago)
also bothersome is that this is what people will be talking about for the next several weeks or whatever, instead of, you know, the annoying reality of climate change.
― i'm gonna be straight with y'all, my name is banaka jones (Z S), Sunday, 3 October 2010 21:33 (fourteen years ago)
I could understand it if the people who refused to take part were portrayed as harming others in a similarly gory way, that sort of fits with the message, but the narrative here is just stupid and unappealing.

p manufactured/deliberate controversy if you ask me -- the guardian article ends "The Guardian warned users of its site that the film contained footage that could cause offence, and continues to link to another version of the film posted on YouTube." -- which seems to even admit they're attempting to make a thing go viral
― thomp, Sunday, 3 October 2010 22:00 (fourteen years ago)
the problem is it's not violent *enough* it needs to be properly gruesome but the exploding mess just looks too special-effectsy.
also is David Ginola famous enough? i'd have had no idea who he was unless i'd read about it.
the guy who directed the last MIA video should have got the job instead.
― piscesx, Sunday, 3 October 2010 22:05 (fourteen years ago)
if it does 'go viral' it will be via people going check it out, climate change dudes are dumb fucks that want to kill kids, can't really see that being the true goal

I see from that blog that "climate science realists" is the current euphemism for climate change deniers. Nice.
I can't believe the stupidity of the video in playing to the most damaging stereotypes, allowing various YouTube commenters to compare environmentalists to terrorists, Stalin, Mao, etc. On what planet is "it's funny to kill people who disagree with you" not going to backfire? I looked at the Mail comments and saw the top one arguing that the Nazis were left-wing - National SOCIALISTS, geddit. These fuckers really don't need any more ammunition.

― I'm a DUDE, Dad! (Viceroy), Sunday, 3 October 2010 22:56 (fourteen years ago)
Exchange on the Guardian comments thread:
I would be more interested in your narrative on how you felt when you first saw it...
Threatened. Very much how I imagine a Jewish shopkeeper would have felt the morning after Kristallnacht...
― Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:06 (fourteen years ago)
I saw the film, found it to be just depressingly stupid and meaningless, I don't understand how at some point in the process of making it, someone didn't take a look at it and realise that it would have a negative impact and alienate people.
that said, even if it were a well-made piece that put across its point in a good manner, right wing nut job bloggers and comment box nutters would stuill have ragged on it.
― Pashmina, Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:11 (fourteen years ago)
if i'd seen than sans context i would have assumed it was made by a "climate change sceptics" group. wtf was everyone thinking?
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:16 (fourteen years ago)
well, obviously the envirofascists couldn't conceal their real intentions - to murder half of the world in the service of "man-made global warmism" - any longer, and it spilled out into this clip. I'm surpised that AlBore and the rest of Gang Green didn't slip up sooner
― i'm gonna be straight with y'all, my name is banaka jones (Z S), Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

― avant-sarsgaard (litel), Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:21 (fourteen years ago)
It's like they sat down and said "Right, the deniers haven't called us Nazis for a while and the email row has died down. They're getting bored. What can we do to look like arrogant, bullying elitists? Kill some kids!"
― Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:23 (fourteen years ago)
Honestly astounded this got past the "person who thought it up describing it to someone who wasn't a sociopath" stage
― da croupier, Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:38 (fourteen years ago)
Thought this film needed more people, especially children, screaming, running to try to escape the room, weeping, vomiting, passing out, violently beginning to shake, etc. etc. THAT would have been funny.
― kenan, Monday, 4 October 2010 00:00 (fourteen years ago)
This will make people want to adjust their HVAC on 10/10 so it wastes more energy just to spite the idiots who made it. Probably not what they were going for.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 4 October 2010 08:24 (fourteen years ago)
This reminded me a bit of a public information film from the late-'70s/early-'80s (possibly withdrawn) which was meant to convey an anti-trespass/anti-vandal message wrt railways but couched its message in the form of a gameshow - teams of kids attack train with coloured rocks, "ooh, pregnant woman with facial lacerations - 100pts to the Blues! Driver...actually blinded - 500pts!" etc.
Except...this is far more stupid.
(Do kids still attack trains? Recall sitting next to a window crazed by an air rifle shot when going through St Helens in about 1980. It's all Gears of War now, innit?)
― Michael Jones, Monday, 4 October 2010 08:41 (fourteen years ago)
i remember once riding on a coach through west london and stuff being thrown at it, but don't think it happens to the extent that a public information film is needed

Gross shock ads are fine when that shock value has a point - the TAC ads here (the transport accident commision) ones are nasty, in your face and confronting but thats the POINT - but threatening ppl because they wont get with climate change is fucking ridic.
I did get a small guilty lol at Gillian Anderson blowing up tho :/

― Matt DC, Monday, 4 October 2010 09:54 (fourteen years ago)
