Gene Hackman in The Replacements. then again, that movie shouldn't have even been made.

my favorite part about the old dogs campaign is that at no point did the trailers or posters give any indication what the movie is actually about.

Hugh Grant spends the entirety of the Morgans looking like he's thinking "I'm sorry, I don't even know why I'm in this movie." It's one of the most apologetic performances I've ever seen.

I was writing an essay on why modern romcoms are so disgracefully lazy, cynical and joyless so I watched that, Valentine's Day and Leap Year in the same day. Good times. Could have been even worse if the publicist for The Bounty Hunter had managed to get me a disc in time.

oh my god, The Bounty Hunter

I watched that on a plane, and only because I'd read both of my books already.

I've seen this movie too and I still have no idea what it's about...

doesn't John Travolta try to go after Becky Catsopolis and instead turns into Jack Nicholson's version of the Joker or something?

Is it because girls are stupid and smell?

Er, no. I think you've misread me. I like romcoms - I just think they're being done very badly at the moment because the studios can get away with it. I mean, some reviewers attacked SATC2 because, basically, they think girls are stupid and smell, and some attacked it because they liked the series and the movie turned it into something hateful and self-parodic.

The baby boomers have defined everything once and for all (Dorianlynskey), Thursday, 7 October 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

I liked The Super.

buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Thursday, 7 October 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

Don't feel like SatC2 is symptomatic of much other than the general coarsening of sensibility that tends to happen in sequels to movie versions of TV shows.

Already WSed last summer (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 7 October 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

I watched the first 20 minutes of Old Dogs and I *highly* recommend it to anyone who considers him or herself a connoisseur of terrible things. It is a heady vintage.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Thursday, 7 October 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

Can't find the clip right now but there's a scene I remember liking in The Super where Pesci comes out to play hoops with the local guys dressed in this ridiculous designer sweatsuit -- hoops scene is on youtube, but I'm talking about the part where he first comes out and the other guy has a funny response line iirc.

buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Thursday, 7 October 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

I like watching bad romantic comedies or just bad comedies in general when I'm bored, and trying to pass time. takes less effort than watching a movie I might like.

committee for the removal of eccentric, evil mods (C.R.E.E.M.) (San Te), Thursday, 7 October 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

The problem for me with "Is genre X getting worse?" is that at any moment in time any genre is full of terrible films. Also good ones.

Already WSed last summer (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 7 October 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

xpost. This isn't the really right thread for it, but I think SATC2 is symptomatic in the sense that it makes women look so bad. Leap Year and the Morgans seem determined to set up the female characters as shallow, uptight careerists and then hit them with a series of humiliations. SATC2's materialism is different but I do think that a lot of "women's pictures" are depressingly lazy and reactionary at the moment. And I disagree - there are good and bad phases for certain genres. The 90s was full of strong, well-written romcoms with a degree of intelligence and affection for their characters.

Cuba Gooding Jr. needs to have an earpiece surgically attached to the side of his head - in every movie he's in he seems to wear one. It would save a lot of time in costuming and makeup.

That Devil's Tomb poster is fascinating. Cuba looks like a person with a life filled with regret, and then you have to wonder wtf is going on with Henry Rollins and Ron Perlman. They both look badly photoshopped -- are they supposed to be playing mutants or toxic avengers or something?

romoing my damn eyes (Nicole), Thursday, 7 October 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

tbf maybe the stars on the cover of "The Devil's Tomb" are supposed to look like they're trapped in Hell.

If Ron Perlman was playing Jeremy Clarkson, then it might be worth seeing.
