TY

It's about time for a backlash against the era of the overdressed, overgroomed man.

buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

People are spending $2k to walk around dressed like lumberjacks, with beards to match. I think the backlash has been here.

Yes, but if this is a backlash, it also requires a backlash.

dont make this thread about cultural trends

its about not being attracted to men in suits

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

I like the idea of a "sharp dressed man" but "men in suits" just makes me think of missionaries.

does Fight Club ever comment on the irony of that Calvin Klein line given that shirtless six-packed Brad Pitt was basically the ur-Calvin Klein model in the movie?

a cross between lily allen and fetal alcohol syndrome (milo z), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

roxy crazy about it or not, wearing suits is so just like, man, just so great

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

xpost isnt the next shot in the movie after that line a focus on pitt's ribbed abs? i got the impression the movie knows

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that movie is more about men wanting to be Men than it is about men being Men.

buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

Look, bottom line is, I don't have a million dollars and I am not meticulous, so just give me good moderately-priced clothes that don't make me look like I'm at a John Mayer concert and I'll be happy. I don't want a mod suit OR a $300 bespoke flannel.

buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 03:04 (fifteen years ago)

Where did someone offer you $300 bespoke flannel.

Also, roffle at Patrick McD post.

^^^^
I'm finding this harder and harder. Vast majority of my shirts are now from the Gap or J. Crew, some Old Navy mixed in. 99% of the stuff I see in malls is shite, and it's so hard to find solid color shirts that are cut well (without being hipster skinny, cuz I'm not) that don't look like middle-aged dadware.
Wondering if late-20s/early-30s are the hardest time for men to dress themselves

every man should be able to rock a suit well imo

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 06:50 (fifteen years ago)

It has to be the easiest thing to rock, really. Unless it's like, all weird somehow. Light blue is a no-no nowadays.

But I think that might be Roxy's trouble with it. It's just so damn EASY to wear a suit.

kenan, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 06:52 (fifteen years ago)

Assuming you own one. I don't.

kenan, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 06:53 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah. You know you want all this un-suit-having man. Don't act like you don't.

kenan, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 06:54 (fifteen years ago)

eh, lots of people can give off a pretty awkward air in a suit - they should train themselves to feel more comfortable

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 06:57 (fifteen years ago)

I was just about to post this:

i dress awesome all the time

That's what you wear, not the clothes.

kenan, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 06:57 (fifteen years ago)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

my feeling about it is that there's all this pressure from mags like esquire/gq and just society in general for men to dress like "proper men" ie not jeans and tshirts like some sloppy douchebag but in a nice trim suit and a classy thin tie with a vintage tie bar and a pocket square and maybe some quirky shoes, and maybe suits do look "nicer" in some ways, but no matter what, when I see a guy wearing a fashionable suit in a casual context, even if I begrudgingly respect his style and joie de vivre, the overwhelming message that it sends is "HIII I'M A FAAANCY MAAAN"
