jonathan ross was fairly shit too

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

Compared to this cabbage he was James fucking Agee.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

i remember jross reviewing 'eureka' but the last few times i saw it there was scarcely a mention of anything like that

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

I was only moaning to myself until the 12-year old blogger came on and then I lost my shit.

The main critic is fantastically bad tho tbf.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

who could have foreseen this tragedy

former moderator, please give generously (DG), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

The element of surprise was in the degree of terribleness to which it...what's the opposite of "aspired"?

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

i'm guessing aspired is right in this case

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

WHAT DO U GUYS THINK

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

how long til tv gets rid of all content and just they just have my own tweets that i haven't thought of yet

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

apparently the blogger on this is the guy who has 'tweet this motherfucker' next to every item on his blog? fuck that guy.

rmde @ the romo dumplings (history mayne), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

HE WAS 12 FUCKING YEARS OLD.

I think that one guy from Consolevania might've been on there too? My advice wd be to start running and not look back ever.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

mnstrm 'film nerds' eh

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

Understand that I don't give a shit about Film Whatever, but I was watching by accident and couldn't believe just how fucked up the Beeb had made this bog-standard format, and how much somebody on high must really really hate Kermode.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

and how much somebody on high must really really hate Kermode

yeah my impression is that within the ranks of pro critics this is seen as a headscratcher

my guess is that kermode is probably held part-accountable for the 'culture show' debacle

Can we lay the ultimate blame for these guys at the door of Empire or something? Honestly don't care about a high/low culture debate but cannot abide a lack of even minimal critical rigour or the horrible aggro fanboyishness of all this shit.

That Danny Leigh spent the first 3 minutes of his Social Network review speaking his brains about an imaginary bollocks version of the Internet in his head before he even mentioned what he thought the fucking film was like.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

kermode isn't rly all that tho....kinda fits w/ the valourization of popkult ephemera, 'cult' nonsense, 70s hwood as the apex of cinema

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

Kermode is far from my favourite guy but underneath his comedy goth stylings he usually at least attempts to engage with the film as a film.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

valourization of popkult ephemera, 'cult' nonsense, 70s hwood as the apex of cinema

Doesn't ring true of Kermode's radio reviews at all, for me.

yeah exactly

ppl who 'are obsessed w/ film' but don't rly like anything that an annoying thirteen year old boy wouldn't like

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

never heard kerm on the wireless

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

lol as father of an annoying thirteen year old boy who's really into movies this is v. true

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

im powerskimming the show, basically i don't give a shit

it's like having a review read to you, kinda, only they're making out it's by two people?

some1 texted in saying how 'the social network' isn't about facebook -- which is true enough, but the whole point of tweets in shows is that they come from regular folks right? regular folks haven't seen it

hell of a lot of it is the same epk/junket stuff you'll get everywhere, including (most importantly) on the web

This is pretty good for a 12 year-old. This is by the 12 year-old, right?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

there were 'regular folk' previews of the social network on sunday (i know, i went to one of them)

not a huge kermode fan, but gimme valourization of popkult ephemera, 'cult' nonsense, 70s hwood as the apex of cinema over bazza norman any day

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

I think there's a place for both but the place for the former probably isn't on the Beeb's flagship movie review show.

don't like this lame three-way division into empire bro, overrated broadsheet gal, and blogger

the reviewers have been hating on the actors they interviewed at the lff, but i thought they were quite sweet by comparison

rmde @ the romo dumplings (history mayne), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

The old school stuff like that was unobjectionable - that's part of covering the beat. Maybe the problem is something to do with the diff between "opinions" and a review.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

film dudes suck anyway, possibly even worse than music dudes

former moderator, please give generously (DG), Thursday, 14 October 2010 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

tbrr i've never watched film ____, not under norman or ross

what i've seen of the new thing wasn't worse than anything i've seen before

it's just that all bbc arts coverage is a bit trivializing. they seem to be able to 'do' history programmes pretty well. but with movies they're really afraid of doing anything in depth. with sports tv it's accepted that people who aren't interested won't be interested, but because most people 'like' films even if they don't watch very many, film shows have to cater for 'most people'.

ha, i think we've all been there

however if yr proudly wearing trainers w/ star wars decals at 35 it becomes a problem

not a huge kermode fan, but gimme valourization of popkult ephemera, 'cult' nonsense, 70s hwood as the apex of cinema over bazza norman any day

― Ward Fowler, Thursday, 14 October 2010 15:14 (1 hour ago)

there's good stuff within those categories obv but not so much the stuff kermode likes (and not srsly expecting a j hoberman type to be given a bbc1 show)

can only vaguely remember barry norman...was probably totes mor but i'm guessing better than ross + nu version

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

barry norman was terrible, from what i can remember

just flaming awful

ha that's not supposed to happen, try this

former moderator, please give generously (DG), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

lol, skimmed it, but at the close of 1989 he ventures the little-known tom cruise from the festival crowd faves 'rain man' and 'top gun' as one to watch over the coming decade

really dug deep, dunno if winkleman could complete with that kind of knowledge

rmde @ the romo dumplings (history mayne), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

Norman was glib and MOR and etc but jeez at least he was a functional film critic.

Ain't Too Proud to Neg (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

man has balls to appear on tv in that cardigan tbf

former moderator, please give generously (DG), Thursday, 14 October 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

man i used to love me some barry norman era FILM show. that is a horrid xmas tree mind.

piscesx, Saturday, 16 October 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

four months pass...

Got to say in its current incarnation this is more watchable than the Ross and Norman days.

Winkleman is no critic but she makes her lack of strength in her own judgments work by allowing others to get on with reviewing/talk and is simply content to moderate and not come down too strongly on what she think might be...e.g. a bit too 'slow' when she does watch and offer an opinion.

Kermode otoh has these awful blokey opinions, knows what he likes and would offer few surprises, and its not like he's short of opportunities to geek out elsewhere anyway.
