Ok allegedly the king of France had a custom chamberpot made that had Ben Franklin's face painted onto the bottom of the bowl so he could pee on BF, who was driving king of France absolutely bonkers. That is fucking awesome imo. Also I love that French women considered him a "darling old sexpot" in the words of Miss Manners (!!!!!).

It still makes me giggle that George Clinton is one of the founding fathers.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 21 October 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

Franklin the one capable of the most lols, Paine and Jefferson the best writers, Adams was cantankerous and often right, and I learned a couple of days ago that Gouverneur Morris wrote the preamble to the Constitution.

Went with Jefferson cuz no one will.

I liked the HBO "John Adams" mini series most when Jefferson walked on: it rendered his personality and nuances quite well (especially the way he'd arrange himself on furniture).

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 October 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

actually voted paine tbrr

some droopy HOOS in makeup (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 21 October 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

Lol

It's hard not to go with Franklin. Though Jefferson was awesome. I agree that his character was the best in that John Adams movie.

THen again, George Washington for fucks sake. That's my vote.

six years pass...

2007 (pre-Broadway): treasonous Alex

That the Hamilton revival admits conservatives and liberals alike gives it obvious appeal. But if opinion-shapers really want to strengthen democracy by enhancing competition, opportunity, and mobility, Hamilton is not their man. Nor did he want to be. Neo-Hamiltonians of every kind are blotting out a defining feature of his thought, one that Hamilton himself insisted on throughout his turbulent career: the essential relationship between the concentration of national wealth and the obstruction of democracy through military force.

That’s putting the matter bluntly, and bluntness is necessary. Time and again this galvanizing principle in Hamilton’s political life has been denied, ignored, and glossed over by his proponents, who thereby risk distorting the entire founding period. One can gain a refreshingly focused picture of Alexander Hamilton simply by looking at episodes in his public life, far from minor, that the rehabilitation industry’s guiding storytellers have done their best to downplay or leave out all together....
