There's the probably apocryphal story of someone addressing a letter as follows

WOOD
JOHN
MASS.

and it being successfully delivered to John Underwood, Andover, Massachusetts.

Been racking my brains for the 20 minutes since this thread started to remember what the card/board game Dingbats was called (as it might pass as a more widely understood and possibly more specific answer than "rebus" in the UK - or maybe not, if I couldn't even remember its name), only to find it was called Whatzit in the US anyway

guys i can't stop playing bracket city

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 23 March 2025 21:44 (five months ago)

Took me a bit to get the hang of but that’s super fun

Founder of America’s Golden Age (Dan Peterson), Sunday, 23 March 2025 22:44 (five months ago)

Yeah and a very clever game mechanic, never seen it before. Mind you I haven't managed to get one without hints and revealing some answers - there's yer usual american bias, not knowing dunkaroos wasn't a handicap today but i've also never heard of a bully pulpit.

birming man (ledge), Monday, 24 March 2025 08:41 (five months ago)

thank you i was stuck on that very last one

i love this tho

bro pretending like he had to reveal the answer

Tracer Hand, Monday, 24 March 2025 17:22 (five months ago)

yeah this is great although as people have said, there are a few US references I've never heard of

DLC Soundsystem (dog latin), Monday, 24 March 2025 17:24 (five months ago)

I was reading Pet Sematary the other day and had absolutely no idea what a "candy striper" was meant to be

DLC Soundsystem (dog latin), Monday, 24 March 2025 17:31 (five months ago)

ooh interesting! but yeah I'm not sure I'm in the frame of mind that often where I'll get all of these

kinder, Monday, 24 March 2025 23:51 (five months ago)

Can someone explain this? the opposite of an L = w

birming man (ledge), Tuesday, 25 March 2025 09:58 (five months ago)

loss and win in sports reporting

Founder of America’s Golden Age (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 25 March 2025 10:15 (five months ago)

Most common in baseball in my experience so it may be an Americanism.

Founder of America’s Golden Age (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 25 March 2025 10:19 (five months ago)

ta - yeah I don't think adding 'in sports' would have helped me.

birming man (ledge), Tuesday, 25 March 2025 10:20 (five months ago)

OK, that's me lost my morning to Bracket City.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 March 2025 10:43 (five months ago)

I am loving this, but pretty much every game I've played has had some sort of baseball or US food reference I'm utterly unaware of

another easy bracket city today

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 29 March 2025 15:50 (five months ago)

Today's was the easiest so far

DLC Soundsystem (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2025 00:39 (five months ago)

96.9, i had to get hints for particularly demoralizing place to get stabbed (obvious really) and youth detention site (bloody cryptic definitions)

birming man (ledge), Tuesday, 1 April 2025 08:17 (five months ago)

oh yeah i'm a bit stuck on a few today. yesterday's was very easy by comparison. medusa?

DLC Soundsystem (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2025 08:33 (five months ago)

yeah i had to use the surrounding context for that one - and others.

birming man (ledge), Tuesday, 1 April 2025 08:41 (five months ago)

got it in the end. got stuck on the detention centre one too

Anyone playing Stacks at The Atlantic? I'm convinced today's (APLOMB, CRIES, DRAGON, ESTEEM, SQUIRE) is unsolvable.

didnt know how the game worked and I basically got lucky with the first word aplomb and where i dropped it, was pretty straightforward after that.

the wrong witch roams the earth (ledge), Saturday, 21 June 2025 20:59 (two months ago)

Took me 47 drops! I saw the bottom row straight away but just couldn't get any of the other rows to work
