I'm anticipating 127 Hours cause even though the trailer looks bad and it's a Danny Boyle film - the reviews says it's great

oh, those reviews.

Gukbe, Thursday, 4 November 2010 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

which film critic do you trust, if any?

whats wrong with the NYT, VillageVoice, TimeOut, Guardian etc..?

Zeno, Thursday, 4 November 2010 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think I really wanna see a movie about a guy coming to terms with his imminent death, drinking his own urine and slowly cutting his arm off with a pocket knife.

Princess TamTam, Thursday, 4 November 2010 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

but...James Franco! And his lips!

This movie looks harrowing as fuck and is probably really great but I don't plan on watching it.

I don't fancy this movie much, it's probably really good, but the premise grosses me out.

Pashmina, Friday, 5 November 2010 00:07 (fourteen years ago)

Even tho this is a pretty great irl story, as the premise for a film, it seems like an extended meditation on one of the existential "challenges" from a Saw movie.

ha! wasn't being snarky. just hadn't actually looked at any reviews.

it says something about me that I went straight to Armond though.

Gukbe, Friday, 5 November 2010 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

i usually don't like survival or "death by nature" movies unless they're a little pulpy like 'north face' or bizarre like 'grizzly man'.

omar little, Friday, 5 November 2010 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

me too, and it's really hard to "shock" and "horror" me in movies, but maybe this one will be the exception.

Zeno, Friday, 5 November 2010 00:12 (fourteen years ago)

I'm interested in it, because the idea of just Franco & the canyon seems ripe for some good acting chops... It could be total ass too, I know..but I like that they tried to film it, so I'll give it a shot. I may close my eyes a lot though

en toto, not bad! wish they'd gone easier on the treacly visions, but hey, Danny Boyle in Uplift & Awards mode.

not very good. the concept or at least the actual real story just hasnt got enough in it to make this that exciting. yeah its got tension and some gruesome scenes (well one), but all the pop culture video spliced in and stupid multi-screen segments seemed to be desperate ways of padding it out just cos a guy stuck in the canyon and making a few light attempts at humour on his video camera arent quite enough to merit a full feature - at least not done in this way. not enough about the characters background or an alternative story line happening back home like say in buried (also about a guy stuck in one small place and unable to get out) to make it really memorable. seemed like kind of a half assed effort from danny boyle. all his best films are british.

I was bored and in place repulsed: by the message, not the amputation. Franco and his foot are terrific though.

Alfred, does Franco REALLY come across as a non-narcissist to you? I like him, but come now... maybe he just plays one in public.

With Franco I see a difference between his capacity for self-amusement and plain elf-absorption.

haha: self-absorption

i was excited for some lizzy caplan when i saw her name in the intro credits, but iirc there was one shot of her for one second with no lines?

this was amazingggg, book's great too, Saw existential decision comparisons are way off base and there's no attempt at shock/horror to be had. i don't agree w/ alfred's assessment either, except that the side-view CGI cutaway shot of his arm is dumb. otherwise, really well done. best Boyle i've seen (i'm not usually a fan). also, a lot of the narcissism/"depth" is pretty true to the book as is the whole movie. yeah the plot is predictable, who cares. everyone should see this.

i could not believe how awful the music in this was! like if i started researching this film & it became apparent that i was going to have to use a combo of this guy's awful personal soundtrack & some incidental stuff scored in the style appropriate to the extreme mountain climbing milieu, to properly reflect the tastes and ambient identity of this guy, i would just not; i would just stop making it.

i was kinda surprised that there was so much sort of jazzy bullshit going on - crowd noises while he acted as a talkshow host, splitscreens, all of that. i was under the impression that boyle disliked the beach, & you'd think he wouldn't go in hard on the 'evocative gimmickry' thing having made that mistake before. i think monotony evokes monotony better than montage, and there wasn't a lot to hang on to in terms of conveying so this is how shitty it feels to be in the same place for all these days straight getting thinner.

eleven years pass...

i saw this for the first time today bc of the new Blank Check podcast ep

- as someone who looooves extreme survival weirdo documentaries i think it bears repeating that these dudes are nuuuuuuuuuts (the fact that he continued fulll-on climbing to the max for many years after is a whole movie of its own, like even he admitted it was like a form of mental illness )

- the editing in this movie is great & excellent & clever & just so well done

- visceral reaction to the music like EW no

- idk why but i was unprepared for onslaught of arm hacking scene ie level of horrorshow
in my head i thought he’d cut the elbow at the joint? but i only say that as someone who knows how to cut up chicken carcasses & knows almost zero about human anatomy

- the drinking urine gagging scene vivid enough for me to picture what that might be like

- that pool he drank from D:

- i sobbed when he saw the people

* by “these dudes” i just mean the obsessive filling-a-hole-in-life breed of climber guys not climbers in general
