Have been waiting for a US release since I saw the trailer... 2-1/2 years ago? Will either be awful or some sort of masterwork of gay-culture-takedown, I hope.

Missed this when it hit UK cinemas a while ago. Heard mixed things.
― Gukbe, Friday, 5 November 2010 14:29 (fourteen years ago)
It's definitely neither of those things (x-post).It's very unique, occasionally ballsy, often pretty average.I genuinely can't quite understand the furor it's caused - even at the West London showing I went to (six months ago, at least!) there were a handful of walkouts and groans. But it's mostly tame, except for a couple of graphic sight gag scenes played for laughs.

it's funny because he's gay

dude, I realize you're prob some fanboy who lives inside the Coens' butts, but u do know every H'wood script passes thru 100 hands?
Joel Coen, Ethan Coen and Terry Zwigoff revised the screenplay.
yeah yeah yeah, maybe that's why half of it sucks.
― kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 19 November 2010 05:45 (fourteen years ago)
but u do know every H'wood script passes thru 100 hands?
good gracious, you have cast the scales from my eyes! what an astounding revelation!
lol at morbz repping for the "Cats & Dogs" auteurs' contributions over the Coens' and Zwigoff's

I really enjoyed this. (It's been available through nefarious means for nearly a year now - that's what happens when you delay yr movie for two years I guess.)
― Simon H., Friday, 19 November 2010 06:21 (fourteen years ago)
sic, plz post all the drafts of Bad Santa you possess so I can read who did what.
no, just eat shit.

Eric, have you seen it yet? Thoughts & opinions, if so?
― Stevie D(eux), Saturday, 27 November 2010 22:08 (fourteen years ago)
Saw Bad Santa cos I thought Ghost World was hilarious. Maybe i need to see it again or something, but i remember being totally not into it. Plus Dan Akroyd's Santa in "Trading Places" owned "Bad Santa" and that scene only went on for like 5 mins.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 27 November 2010 22:39 (fourteen years ago)
Had to skip the screening (have to skip almost all daytime screenings -- the curse of having a real job).

like Rex Reed!
Mr. Carrey has balls of brass, but seeing him dressed flamboyantly in fish-net bikinis and high-heel Nancy Sinatra boots is an experience I hope never to repeat again in this lifetime.

If the phrases "blacking up" and "cripping up" are used for their respective actorial endeavours, what's the appropriate term for actors adopting a gay friendly stance?

Carrey on Letterman, undressing Dave with his eyes as Paul Shaffer played slow GaGa is one of the best things i've seen this year! Hope the film is as good.

Saw this whenever it came out in the UK. I remember it being pretty rough around the edges but loving it in places. Ewan McGregor was so touching -- had everyone else forgotten he could be this good?
Glad it finally got a US release. I'm kind of amazed that it got financed in the first place.
― Alba, Monday, 3 January 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)
Will finally catch it this week.
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 January 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)
I would love it if McGregor got a best supporting actor award from somewhere for it, but I guess that's unlikely.
― Alba, Monday, 3 January 2011 21:42 (fourteen years ago)
both performances were great imo. Carey worked his 'wacky' physicality & acting chops to great effect, and yes, McGregor was absolutely golden. i appreciated how Russell's sociopathy & the situational hopelessness somehow never become trite or overly flippant (as it seems with a lot of gallows humor i've come across lately)

pretty funny, liked the way they messed with your expectations re: the Tragic Homo ending
― Princess TamTam, Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)
this was very good. got a pretty bad rap, in my opinion; not funny enough, I suppose, or serious enough for some people. although the continual escape/scene changes near the end were hysterical. really overlooked movie.
― akm, Friday, 22 April 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)
Still haven't swallowed this one, but on the basis of Crazy, Stupid, Love., I buy that this movie could be great. Not that there's likely to be much crossover between the two target audiences. (Not just gay/straight, but romantic/skeptic, too?)
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 04:38 (fourteen years ago)
woah does this mean Crazy Stupid Love is actually good? that would be nice. dreadful title though.
― THIS IS SATIRE BTW (Simon H.), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 04:44 (fourteen years ago)
I'm definitely no big romantic, so I'll probably get big time "morning after" syndrome on it, but right now it feels like the most satisfying mainstream movie I've seen all year.
― third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 04:54 (fourteen years ago)
Like, I really should be mad at a movie that uses this many sitcom-twist devices.
