dishwashers are such a foreign concept to me. if I had one I would def vote putting dirty dishes in, I would think taking clean dishes out would be soothing in a therapeutic way.

I think maybe I prefer putting the dirty dishes in the dishwasher? Everything's going to one place, as opposed to unloading, when everything's going different places.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 19 November 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

no taking clean dishes out is more preferable

conrad, Friday, 19 November 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

what about taking dirty dishes out of the dishwasher?

the coffee of coffees (corey), Friday, 19 November 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

Loading is worse. Unloading is kind of fun -- putting the kitchen in order, nice result.

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Friday, 19 November 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

Loading is the worst. tbh the only reason I ever unload the dishwasher is because dirty dishes need to be loaded – I go to the dishwasher whenever I need a fork. I am a disgusting savage.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Friday, 19 November 2010 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

dayo otm, putting dirty dishes in means messing about so that glasses dont fall over and bowls never sit right and you prob need to rinse off most of it anyway

removing, stacking and storing away clean dishes, otoh, is a flow-inducing activity of calmness and the restoration of order.

My husband does all the dishwasher loading. It makes my life about 1000x better.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Friday, 19 November 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

unloading is always quicker for me and thus preferable

ciderpress, Friday, 19 November 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

I really hate unloading

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Friday, 19 November 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

Unloading. Loading never happens all at once - I'll just put each bit of crockery/cutlery in as I go, and let it fill over 1-2 days (to save water), then run it. But then I have to unload the whole lot, booo. Hurts my back.

That said I would kill to have a dishwasher again. Had one in the last 3 places/10 years so being without one again is a PITA.

And this one time, on Bandcamp... (Trayce), Friday, 19 November 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

I will put both off forever, but loading is worse. Do not like worrying about whether things will fall over and break, does stuff need soaking or rinsing first, which items are too delicate to machine-wash, how to stack everything in so as to fit as many things in as possible without obstructing the water flow so half of them will come out dirty, etc

(also the inevitability of sticking your thumb in something squishy or greasy while gathering dirty crockery)

Unloading is OK unless you screwed up the loading and everything is coming out with food slime still caked on - there is still a little frisson of worry every time I go to open it and wonder if I will see an array of smashed things, but again, I can blame that on loading

(not sure I have actually ever retrieved anything broken from the dishwasher so I don't know why it worries me so much, especially given how many glasses I broke while washing them by hand)

neither of these things are arduous at all -- one is literally the most lazy thing you can do & the other takes like three minutes -- the fuck is wrong w/ you people

OTM. Loading/unloading the dishwasher >>>>>>> doing the washing up.

This is a constant bone of contention in my house as my housemates will never load or unload the dishwasher until there is nothing clean left. It's infuriating, because by that time you want to eat and there's nothing clean, with the added annoyance that there is more dirty crockery than can fit in the dishwasher. They will voluntarily WASH EVERYTHING BY HAND rather than load or unload the dishwasher.

I will put both off forever, but loading is worse

Then you're making twice as much work for yourself! If you unload it soon after a wash then you can fill it as and when things get dirty, rather than waiting for "loading the dishwasher" to become an annoying task that you keep putting off.

Matt DC, Friday, 19 November 2010 10:54 (fifteen years ago)

unloading is marginally worse for exactly the reason trayce gives

also because USUALLY the only reason you're unloading is because you're about to put in a fresh heap of dirty dishes so it's this pre-chore you have to do, this obstacle

but yes Jordan S. otm - i have recently moved to a flat w/no dishwasher and i arrogantly proclaimed not to care - "i wash the pots and pans every night anyway, this'll just be like 5 extra minutes" - well not exactly

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 19 November 2010 10:54 (fifteen years ago)

I wasn't trying to imply that these were particularly arduous tasks, Jordan S. But o8ne is probably worse thanl the other in people's minds. I want to find out how that skews.

Our dishwasher broke down a couple weeks ago and while we were waiting for it to get fixed, I did the dishes by hand for the first time in years. I didn't mind it at all except for the drying.

the caroline notsaying memorial displayname (kkvgz), Friday, 19 November 2010 11:21 (fifteen years ago)

I hate doing dishes. HATE HATE. LOATHE. Am currently more or less sullenly resigned to it since we cook & eat at home a lot so they ALWAYS need doing. Also our kit is too small to do anything if there are dishes stacked anywhere, so if there's more than two plates and a pot in the sink, I get the pink gloves on.

Loading a d/w is TOTALLY AWESOME because it's better than hand-washing, and it's the last time you have to see those dirty, dirty dishes!!! You just chuck 'em in there and hit the button; the shuuushing-rrrrrr-shhhhhhhsh sound of water slopping and rotors spinning is a lullaby to me.

I admit I find unloading a teeeeeeny bit tedious. But loading??? Man, that is the life.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Friday, 19 November 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

I'm quite happy to wash up but I hate putting the dried pots away so I guess I wd be the same if we had a dishwasher

Raage Saga (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 November 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

Unloading kinda blows: I like to load if forced to choose.

Wd prefer chucking dishes out the window tbqh

Washing dishes - actual hands-in-sink washing - is my favourite of all the household chores. The only thing more fun is watering plants, and I've never owned more than one.

blogosfeer of a black planet (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 November 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

You load the dishwasher just a little bit at a time. Might take you a few days.

But unloading, you have to get everything out in one chore. You're running around replacing everything. Then you're finding dishes that didn't get clean all the way so now you're unloading AND loading the dishwasher.

For any able-bodied person, neither activity is particularly stressful, so you have to look at the time involved.

yes

unloading is no fun

also hands-in-sink washing of dishes is the most worst household chore, if only because you have to do it so often

peter in montreal, Friday, 19 November 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

i don't even remember what it's like to have a dishwasher anymore, it's been like five years.

actually, we technically have a dishwasher that doesn't work and isn't connected to everything, so it's now the liquor cabinet.

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

"Loading a dishwasher" as something you do all at once does not compute. You just have dirty dishes piling up on the counter? The counter that's directly above the dishwasher? Why not just put each piece in the dishwasher as you go?

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 19 November 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

I still kinda dread unloading just because it was one of my chores as a kid. I'll put it off now, then when I do it I'm always surprised by how quick and easy it is.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 19 November 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

because youdidnt unload it yet

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Friday, 19 November 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

So then it only makes sense for unloading it to be worse, since not only are you putting it off because it's a chore but by putting it off you're creating another chore.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 19 November 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

When will they invent a loading/unloading machine????

man on the fucking moon but i still have to manually load and unload my dishwasher, fuck the world

i absolutely agree it is worse

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Friday, 19 November 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

Need 2 dishwashers obv - 1 to load dirty dishes into and 1 for clean dish storage, when the current clean dish one is empty and all the dishes are now in the dirty dish one, you run it and it is now the clean dish one.

Jaq, Friday, 19 November 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

btw, I vote unload is worse, b/c loading is always a great puzzle to solve

Jaq, Friday, 19 November 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

I cannot load the dishwasher and I fail at Tetris (Oh blame be for having a Sega Genesis with COLUMNS and DR. ROBOTNINK'S MEAN BEAN MACHINE)

LOL this was basically how I used mine anyway - ran it once every few days, used up the clean stuff right out of the d/w, then reloaded it... well, kind of.
