Jobs for People Who Don't Like People

Do you work better in a team of one?

Do you despise water cooler small-talk?

Are you... an introvert?

On Fox's hit show House, Hugh Laurie's character loves to diagnose diseases but hates the patients who have them. Although it makes for good television, becoming a doctor probably isn't an ideal career move for people who don't like people.

But there are plenty of other jobs that are better geared for those who hate to socialize. Check out these careers that let you get the job done while keeping social interaction to a minimum.

Yeah, the problem with graduate level new careers is that sometimes you are in your 40s before you realise you wd rather work on your own.

local authority housing glaring omission imo. Not only are your misanthropic tendencies re-inforced daily, you get the chance to do something about it in a million small ways. Lol my soul.

My friend works in a similar job and she has to deal with the public all the time tho.

Ah sorry I read the thread title as "jobs for people who want to be left the hell alone".

Goths in Home & Away in my lifetime (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

the best job in that case is 'no job' but that job sucks.

Goths in Home & Away in my lifetime (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

i beg to differ

Jefferson Mansplain (DG), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

that job doesn't suck but the pay leaves a bit to be desired

Jefferson Mansplain (DG), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

chance'd be a fine thing. They'd get to most of the current govt twenty five years before me

I voted computer programmer, mostly just so that it doesn't get zero votes and make me feel bad about my uncool job

peter in montreal, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

Trouble with computer programming is that ime you have to deal with other computer programmers. It's nowhere near solitary enough compared to those other jobs.

^^^ and a thousand more ^s. For people with no social skills, hell is being piled into a small office with 30 other people with no social skills, including several who have no idea that everyone else tired of them speaking 15 minutes ago, several who may not even realise they drum on their knees incessantly, a couple of raging misanthropic drunks, and at least one hyperactive attention-loon who runs around unplugging computers people are using for lolz.

Then management can come in and tell them that just because their contract says 9-5 doesn't mean the management don't take a dim view of people not being there 7am to 9pm, before retreating to their own office and/or the golf course.

Do you work with me? Am the raging misanthropic drunk. Hiya.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

Actually I lied: my current office doesn't seem to have one, so I've taken it upon myself to start training for the position myself. Someone's gotta do it.

(Hi!)

Did some medical transcription (and similar Data Entry work) over the years and frankly that's kinda my favorite way to do brain-dead buckle-down-and-get-it-done work. Pays reasonably well. Don't have to talk to anyone for HOURS. Don't have to talk to the public or any customers EVER. And more often than not, an extremely lax dress code and the ability to listen to my ipod the entire time I'm working!

finding it hard to believe that wmc ever liked people, dubious claim at best.

Would consider data entry job on the terms above.

Goths in Home & Away in my lifetime (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

If you think you might like people too much, work for a porn mag or porn site. You will hate the entire human species within weeks. I lasted five years.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

for years i worked in the financial industry/trading. I thought i hated people, turns out i hated the people i worked with and the job itself. Much happier now and i like people.

Mark Chmuras Hot Tub Crime Machine (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Sometimes I wish I could write fiction, just because my job would be sitting in a room writing books... regrettably my attempts at creative writing produced the proverbial "toe-curling-ly embarrassing" emotional effect.

jeevves, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

misanthropes would find SOME accounting jobs TERRIBLE. they'd do OK working as a desk jockey at one of the Big5 i suppose. but if they work for or run a CPA firm -- and have to deal with people who want their tax returns prepared, or some sort of financial planning -- they'd be miserable.

Exterminate Capitalism Lobster Package (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

I like working with people, only so long as they're young, beautiful, and possessing of ravacious cleavage.

Good news, everyone! (kelpolaris), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

On Fox's hit show House, Hugh Laurie's character loves to diagnose diseases but hates the patients who have them.

Why do people like Wilson? He bothers me.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

I would call myself misanthropic but I actually like working customer service jobs, mostly because it gives me a 'frame' through which to deal with people.
