"being cleverer than you via pretending to rep for things that people who aren't cleverer than you like" vs "being cleverer than you via scorning something that people who aren't as clever as you like but scorning the notion that scorning this unimportant thing that people who aren't really less clever than you like is scornful because you're cleverer than to scorn people less clever than you" also abstain from only borderline division of Lib Dem government cos you're cleverer than that.

don't really agree w/ sniping at s-lee's sometimes sneery treatment of popkult, he is almost a lone voice for difficulty/modernism/etc in his kinda alt kinda mnstrm niche, and he can be pretty funny

his treatment of more general culture wars stuff (basically lol his mum is so damn provincial/reactionary) can be sunk by self-congratulation

watched the comedy vehicle clip; heh'd, smiled at & generally agreed with stew's rant; lolled at the del boy clip after anyway

love both, but particuarly liked the skit about the annual village festival that celebrates it, haha.

Every comment I've ever read in defence of Stuart Lee has been an inference that the other person is too stupid or low-brow to understand him. Where do you all get this sense of superiority from? I've seen his act a couple of times and there's nothing clever about it. As far as I can see he just says (and repeats) obvious or banal things really slowly, breathes heavily into the mic sometimes, makes a needlessly mean comment like "I wish Richard Hammond was dead" and then leaves the stage to rapturous applause

I wonder if lee got around to googling/c&p-ing "stuart lee" pans, it could open up a whole new area for his site

Stuart Lee can be funny but he really is lazy at picking his targets.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 11:48 (twelve years ago)

one of the amazing things about Lee's funniness to me is that he does it despite being a corny indie twat

truth bomb

swmp thing (wins), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

although actually, no it isn't, because I mean we don't find it "amazing" that all the other comedians that have historically been at lee's level of funniness happen to be racist/reactionary/all sorts of much worse sins than being a corny indie twat

maybe it's just the close to homeness that makes ppl judge lee more harshly for being a gliberal anti-lamestream warrior (or, as he would argue, playing one)

swmp thing (wins), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

who are the other comedians of value

Chinese Taipei (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

general or specifically stand-up? there are lots! (but I have low standards & wouldn't claim expertise)

swmp thing (wins), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

comedians of value of any description

Chinese Taipei (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

oh idk chris morris, doug stanhope, early steve martin, daniel kitson, chris rock. I like peter kay too, and russell brand. I don't like ricky gervais or apollobot 3000. Peter cook is alltime. Like I say, lots. Pretty shit humans tho for the most part. I just don't think it's that weird that stewart lee is consistently funny (and he is imo, my favourite comedian) despite being kinda dense about a lot of things

swmp thing (wins), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)

daniel kitson is the secret comedian

Oasis probably. I didn’t like them when I was a twentysomething snob, because I thought Blur were clever, and now my wife really likes them, so I’ve listened to them a lot and I really, really like them now.
