my new thing is keying cabs that don't stop, even if their light is off, or dudes who stop, ask where you're going and won't unlock the doors. Also, I cut up seats if I get in the car and start bitching.

I went the full Buffy on a guy who was drunkenly harassing me and a friend on the Tube. All the other passengers were cowed or looking over at us with embarrassment, as people often do on public transport. He kept standing on our feet and went for the full range of sexist insults when we told him to stop, and kept barging into us. When we reached our destination, I told my friend to get clear, called out, 'hey, asshole!' and when he lunged forward, I spat a massive and truly special lung cookie into his face, tripped him onto the carriage floor, and swung myself out of the carriage using the overhead bar as the doors closed on our attacker.

Note: I'm about 5'3". He was 6'5" and built like a brick shithouse.

Everyone has the power to do harm to one another, but without some sort of sanction from the community and some sort of process for obtaining that sanction, using the power to harm others cannot result in any benefit to the community. Harming others upon your own sanction, for your own personal benefit, is never legitimate, however justified and righteous you feel about it.

Sorry Jimmy The Mod, I don't really think keying cars is really justifiable.

I am using your worlds, Sunday, 12 December 2010 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

None of the examples in this thread seem particularly justifiable TBH.

If someone broke into my home with intend to do bodily harm, and I was able to subdue said person, I could imagine giving him a few gratuitous whacks and feeling entirely justified about it. But basically vigilante justice is not a good thing.

You guys are crazy! There are SO many people who deserve spit in their face!

Fetchboy, Sunday, 12 December 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

The thing about Suzy's story (and I don't mean to single out Suzy, just using it as an example) is how easily that situation could have been defused. They could have moved to a different part of the train or gotten off at the next station and waited for a later train. Spitting in someone's face and then tripping them just seems like the worst way to handle the situation. And that's my suspicion with most cases of "vigilante justice." They all seem to revolve around bad judgment brought on by rage.

Super Cub, Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

which ear is the queer ear (corey), Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

Wow, I guess I'm just conflict averse. The last thing I would want to do with a big bully in a public place is get into a confrontation. It's not like you're going to convince him of his bad ways. In my mind, there is no way to change people or even "society." I would like to live in a world with less conflict, so I try my best to avoid promoting conflict. I would prefer running away than spitting in someone's face, but I guess that's a personal decision.

Super Cub, Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

To clarify, I fundamentally believe that violence is totally unacceptable, but I can't make someone less violent by attacking them.

^LOL.

I've told the story on ILX in the past; logistically the guy gave me a perfect opportunity to kick his legs out from under him. I could never have done what I did if I hadn't known a) roughly how long the doors stay open at stops b) that our door opened onto the exit so I could send my friend there to watch and wait c) dude was drunk enough to be somewhat movement-impaired though he had no probs shooting off his mouth and d) I've always been small so my uncle the cop taught me self-defense tricks no bully ever expects smaller people will use (when I was 12, I got chased by a pervert in a car while on my bike, having fled the strip-mall where dude had asked me if I wanted to see his cock, hence the special cop ninja lessons).

This started because a guy could not handle two teeny-tiny women asking him politely not to step on them. He launched into a tirade where we were called bitches, sluts, virgins, lesbians, and ugly in rapid succession - I guess he just couldn't make up his mind what we were - while an entire carriage looked on and said NOTHING. He also kept stepping on and nudging us - and my friend was barely five feet tall. I would've been mortified if I hadn't been so angry but it was the kind of anger that goes cold and silent while it plots a bully's imminent downfall. I wanted him to be on his ass on the bottom of the carriage while onlookers laughed and that's exactly where he wound up... having to ride all the way home with them.

I am firmly of the belief that if I am minding my own business in a public place (or indeed in a packed Tube carriage) it's the person misbehaving who should leave me alone or move.
