feel like making android free was super smart by google as they really just need to make sure ios didnt reach monopoly status - but open sourcing it was dumb causing fragmentation of their platform

Having heard loads of stories about people being unable to upgrade to latest Android due to arbitrary manufacturer/carrier limitations, I'm going with iOS. At least everyone who owns a reasonably new iDevice is predictably on the same sw version.

I've only played with ANDROID phones so this is basically judging superficial look/feel and app count, but by that criteria iOS kills it.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 16 December 2010 00:27 (fourteen years ago)

I have a droid x and iphone 4.

Droid
- handles multitasking and background apps better
- free navigation
- notifications and alerts much more accessible
- a lot easier to configure options on various apps.

iphone
- GAMES
- battery destroys droid by 2 or 3 times (price you pay for all the background processes on droid)
- itunes
- all your apps are front and center (w/ droid you gotta make shortcuts)

my iphone is free but droid is not so that decision is pretty easy. otherwise, it'd be a really tough call but I might still go iphone b/c of GAMES. most the other stuff you can get around with a few clicks.

Surely only 16 are "front and center"?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 16 December 2010 08:21 (fourteen years ago)

android apps don't wiggle when you move them

hey DARSH (cozen), Thursday, 16 December 2010 08:26 (fourteen years ago)

there are no games for the android?

F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 16 December 2010 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

"front and center" meaning iOS starts on the app screen. Droid takes one extra click which makes it easier to forget apps you downloaded.

Also big one I forgot - Droid does not have an update all option for apps. Have to do updates one by one.

i have been otm (bnw), Thursday, 16 December 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

there's an app for this poll (iphone only)

vladimir pootawn (am0n), Thursday, 16 December 2010 17:23 (fourteen years ago)

The Android Market does have an 'update all' and has done for ages. Regardless of which version of the fragmented OS you use, too

Android's hardware agnosticism, thus huge range of handsets is difficult to ignore. My fully featured 'droid phone is effectively half the size of an iphone and fits in coin pocket of my jeans. Also cost 1/3 of what a contract free iphone would.

Bill A, Thursday, 16 December 2010 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

apparently update all was part of an update I never got. So I will sub in No Zing.

iphone would be nice but yeah changing my provider and adding at&t monthly rate hick to my budget is not going to cut it. android phones sell two for one through tmobile with a cheaper plan.

feel like this is indicative of the difference between the two platforms - theres more options w/andriod but none of them have the polish conferred by apples focus

ice cr?m, Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, I mean the iOS is a pretty storming piece of work in most respects but the handset, regardless of how thin it gets, is too big for me to carry around comfortably. Surprises me that apple haven't gone for an iphone mini/nano tbh.

Android can be a bit hokey at times, but I still like it a lot. Also, Google Sky Map is incredible.

Bill A, Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

don't know about anyone else but i'm having endless issues with the wireless connectivity on my samsung galaxy s android. fucking don't if you ever consider.

Ste, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

In case this helps: since I upgraded to Android 2.3.3 I have to first disconnect the 3G/H data network mode (long press the power button and click the second option) before I activate wifi. If I don't, it acts like my wifi doesn't have any DNS information and can't find any sites for the first couple of minutes. If I deactivate that data mode first, wifi works immediately.

Oh, and battery full or alarm time for a calendar event doesn't seem to beep or vibrate anymore.

Those are the two issues I have at the moment. Both aren't _that_ bad, except when I count on my phone to remind me of something. No beep or vibrate = too late for dentist, etc

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

(also on Galaxy S btw)

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

There may be an Android update v2.3.4 on the way, apparently.

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

My web connectivity has been down since last night, and I got like 35 "message download failed" texts yesterday that were DRIVING ME CRAZY from 3-10pm. Gonna call Verizon shortly and unload.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

- if you have bluetooth problems: turn off the phone and remove the battery for +15 minutes. Put back battery, turn back on, try again, should work now.

- message download failed: had that once when someone had sent me a vv big attachment. Too big for phone carrier's mail routers, but allowed by regular internet provider. Deleted the message via a web mail client and after that my phone downloaded everything else. Not Android/Samsung's fault, in my case.

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

android is ((_) butts (_))

F U (cozen), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

Apparently my phone needed some updates?? I just got off call w cust svc and they seem to have pushed out some changes to my settings that worked fine. Back up now!

That's the second time in about 10 days that I've had connectivity issues, though. Will be angry if that keeps happening.

iOS v ANDROID

ice cr?m, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

how do i upgrade to 2.3.3? is that the firmware? (mine says 2.2)

tried the disabling thing, still doesn't work. yeah its a problem with the dns it seems, i put in the static dns and i did have it working at some point but its just gone again now. pretty atrocious really.

Ste, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

even when it connects finally to my wireless, it just won't send or receieve data or browse the web etc. wtf at this

Ste, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a firmware update. Can be installed with Samsung Kies (that's the name over here, don't know if it's the same name everywhere.

Do make sure you know the settings for your data connections before you upgrade though, they may dissappear.

These firmware updates generally add new features (use your phone as wireless modem for a portable, for instance) or improvements like battery life or GPS performance.

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

For your other problems, try out different settings or channels on your wireless router. changing the channel width from 20, the default, to 40 sped up my phone's connection to it a lot. Using my provider's dns instead of letting the router act as a dns server did too. I don't see why it could work for some people but not others...

StanM, Thursday, 16 June 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

whiney g. aimhouse (electricsound), Friday, 30 September 2011 01:38 (thirteen years ago)

By that I mean the ones who are 100% biased and unfeasibly angry. There seem to be loads of them.

idgi

whiney g. aimhouse (electricsound), Friday, 30 September 2011 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

also i think any sort of platform arguments are stupid in the extreme. mac vs pc arguments (like the ones that occur hourly on any music making forum) are seriously pathetic.

whiney g. aimhouse (electricsound), Friday, 30 September 2011 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

Like 100% Apple fanboys talk up everything Apple and con people in buying Apple stuff, but 100% Android fanboys get all weirdly irrational and ignore obvious facts. A good case in point is the Apple v Samsung case atm, where the worst of the Android fanboys insist that Samsung didn't copy loads of Apple stuff, Apple's just being mean etc. idgi.

xp yeah, different platforms suit different purposes and they can co-exist happily and it's all cool.

hi, i need to buy a new phone. i should buy an iphone right? and is the 4s so much better than the 4g (or whatever) that i should wait 10 days for it to be shipped, or should i just cop the 4g cuz it's cheaper + i could have it tonight?

tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

4S: newer proc, better camera (esp better optics), Siri, will presumably have a somewhat longer software update lifespan (tho the 3GS is up to date with iOS 5)
4: $100 cheaper. How much does this $100 matter to you amortized over your two year contract?

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

but yeah get an iPhone

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

i like my android phone (moto atrix) cos i can t*rrent tv shows and hook my cell up to my tv w/hdmi

can an iphone do that these days? last time i had iphone was 3g and it couldn't really do anything.

sleepingbag, Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)

i don't care that much about the camera... more wondering how big of a deal siri is

tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'm not hooking my cellphone up to my tv anytime soon

tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

also this is probably a dumb question but what's the difference b/w buying an iphone from the apple store and buying it thru my carrier?

tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

Siri is not a big deal. Reasons to get the 4s if you don't care abt camera: 1. It's faster at everything. 2. That's it

stet, Thursday, 12 January 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

fair enough

tyga mother (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

two years pass...

I'm way into the Android OS. It's pretty simple and vastly more customizable than iOS. Like, I can make a folder and organize stuff with it. It's sort of ridiculous for that to be a notable feature but it's something you can't do on any iPhone device, and I'm old school enough to really love it.

Has anyone dabbled in app writing / game creation? I don't know much programming but there seem to be a lot of game makers and engines. Are any of them any good? I wouldn't mind putting together a 2d side scroller or something just for fun.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by this, but you've been able to organize stuff into folders on iOS for quite a while now.
