Who would have thought that a movie in which Jessica Alba gets spanked in the 2nd scene is could be laughably bad?

Trainwreck

billstevejim, Saturday, 11 December 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

Down the street there's an accident
I hear that the bodies can still be seen
Let's call the sheriff a cock-sucker
See if he's read "The Killer Inside Me"

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Saturday, 11 December 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

love the book. love the director. but have held off seeing the film. so - why sooo bad.

nonightsweats, Saturday, 11 December 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

Great story, actually had me in suspense at parts. But ruined by lots of sophomoric direction and farts of melodrama throughout.

Agree with Ebert that Affleck is actually pretty good w/ the shoddy sketch of a character that he's given.

This movie is fucking terrible.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 11 December 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

i noticed this movie on the OnDemand menu a while back, and am just bored enough to watch it right now just to participate in this thread

lol @ casey affleck's accent. people who think he's just soooo much more talented than his brother are ridic imo.

some dude, Saturday, 11 December 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

some extreme hate for this movie on the michael winterbottom thread on ILE put me off ever seeing it I think

although I like the book / love Jim Thompson

dmr, Saturday, 11 December 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

You can actually hear the director saying:

"ok, Casey, Jessica. This film is going to have some really raw violence. It's going to be shocking. But if we do it right it's really going to tell this story. Are you with me?"

And then affleck and alba stoicly nodding yes with visions of oscars in their heads.

also not to be all capt horndog t&a but the fact that Jessica Alba is having sex in almost every scene she's in but didn't show her boobs is fine until it gets so frustrating that it's like the camerawork is actually suffering in an effort to show as much of her boob as possible as she rolls around getting fucked while still somehow avoiding exposing a nipple. like it became distracting by the 3rd or 4th time.

but tbf I guess there was a whole lot more wrong about the sex scenes than just that.

I guess this movie frustrated me not because I was expecting it to be good, but because while watching it I could see how it might actually be a good movie in the hands of a different director (and possibly a few diff actors?)

can't think of another movie to compare that to.

Some fatal misjudgments, but "save the pieces," as the NY Times TV page blurbs used to say. Thought Affleck was pretty good.

This was just okay, but to be fair, I'm not sure exactly how you would improve it since its problems aren't exactly fidelity to the book.

Wait what are you saying?

http://tinyurl.com/jerrymacarena (gr8080), Sunday, 12 December 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

That it's almost ridiculously faithful to the novel basically so improving the movie would basically have required Winterbottom to make a completely different movie (i.e. one that wasn't a completely straight shot for shot/line for line adaptation of The Killer Inside Me.)

this movie has the mentalist in it!

ice cr?m, Sunday, 12 December 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

My problems were more w/ the scoring and the non-grunginess of its look.

xxpost:

Ok that makes sense, I haven't read the book.

idk I guess I'm talking about ~tone~ and ~pacing~ and ~style~ choices being done differently.

I've already said I enjoyed the story.

"farts of melodrama"

lol

i dont have much interest in this but i remember seein the redband and being freaked out by how graphic the scene where jessica alba gets punched to death was

morbs otm re: the score, it's terrible.

http://tinyurl.com/jerrymacarena (gr8080), Sunday, 12 December 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

looks terrible. Like someone lifted all the disgusting shit from Lynch movies but forgot to make it compelling or mysterious or suspenseful. Total trash.

(but obv. that's just my review of the trailer!)

Should have used the MC 900 Ft Jesus song in there somewhere.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 12 December 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

I could see how it might actually be a good movie in the hands of a different director

Winterbottom is so hit or miss.

I see what you're saying here somewhat but without spoilering, the motivation at the end is completely different and infuriatingly stupid as a result to me.

Also (and yeah this can barely be helped) the shift away from first person narrative destroys everything interesting about the main character. I guess maybe it's a book that kinda can't really translate to film, but that is no excuse for making a shitty shitty attempt against all odds imo.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

finished watching this this morning, and Casey A. is just horrible and i can't imagine him being good in any heavy lifting role, he was totally the #1 problem with this movie (although not its only problem)

some dude, Sunday, 12 December 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

xp yes this is movie's biggest problem.

"I guess maybe it's a book that kinda can't really translate to film, but that is no excuse for making a shitty shitty attempt against all odds imo."

I don't know that I agree, but it's definitely a book that isn't well served translated the way Winterbottom chose to to.

lol Morbs I like how you take for granted the fact that the average Slant mag reader shares your opinion that Tarrantino is shit

I don't take it for granted; i'm tellin em the real shit.
