In a weird way, a third film for inclusion: Mayor of the Sunset Strip, the Rodney Bigenheimer documentary...I'm not a lover of Zelig, but it is impressive, and a lot of Forest Gump drove me up the wall (primarily how it wasted a lot of great music; parts of the Forest-Jenny romance I liked).

Bingenheimer.

I don't even know what Zelig is and I'll rep for it over fucking Forrest Gump.

Saw Zelig in a theater and it left me pretty cold. Gump, otoh, is modestly amusing. I liked the bit about Gump's cross-continental running. Tbh, I can actually recall many bits from Gump, while Zelig is just a forgotten blur.
― Aimless, Monday, 13 December 2010 04:40 (fourteen years ago)
btw I love Zelig.

there's a bubba gumps at the most popular tourist destination in hk, it's kind of bizarre esp for tourists from america, like "okay you've just crossed 3000 miles to be here, we'll welcome you by serving you cheesy shrimp baked in vats of cheese, served with appletinis that come in a bucket"

i would eat all these bubba shrimp. yum. nowhere near me though.
i love zelig too. its so funny. i remember seeing that when it came out and everyone in the theatre laughing and laughing.
― scott seward, Monday, 13 December 2010 05:02 (fourteen years ago)
fuck it, i'll rep for gump. idgaf. its really funny, has some great comic performances, and yeah it nails the Forrest-Jenny romance. the part at the end when hes meetin his kid for the first time and shes like 'hes really smart' and you can tell hes gettin choked up and then im gettin choked up cuz im a shithead - that scene is like 'damn'
which isnt to say that its an unproblematic masterpiece and i totes understand why it rubs ppl the wrong way, but there's a lot of good stuff in there and imo u have to give it credit for being so memorable and well executed
― Princess TamTam, Monday, 13 December 2010 05:22 (fourteen years ago)
zelig owns too but i dont remember it really being funny
― Princess TamTam, Monday, 13 December 2010 05:27 (fourteen years ago)
Zelig is one of Woody's 3 or 4 best films, and the best 'mockumentary' of all time.
― kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:29 (fourteen years ago)
There are no words for how much I hate Forrest fucking Gump. Mostly because when it came out there was this explosion of OH HURRAY OUR NATIVE SON WINSTON GROOM HAS HIT THE BIG TIME, LOCAL AUTHOR Y'ALL bullshit, but for so, so many other reasons.
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:36 (fourteen years ago)
It doesn't help that a) I read the book and it was just terrible, and b) whenever a teacher was out sick and they couldn't get a substitute on time either it or Rudy was the go-to tape to keep the kids quiet.
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

Saw Zelig for the first time recently. I thought it was amazing! I never saw Forrest Gump. Descriptions of the plot always made it sound blatantly derivative of Being There.

seriously if you only have half-memories of it and the stock footage stuff, see it again. it really holds up.
― tickle me imo (s1ocki), Monday, 13 December 2010 15:41 (fourteen years ago)
i despise gump tbh
i kinda blame gump for gary sinise. not like i hate him, but before gump he was kind of a nobody in popular culture (i don't follow theatre-world) and after gump i feel like i've had to see his face forever everywhere. i think i saw him in that malkovich of mice and men. and jack the bear too. (jack the bear was one of my favorite books when i was a kid. loved that book so much.)
― scott seward, Monday, 13 December 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago)
i guess what i'm saying is that i don't need a ton of sinise in my life. and gump made him a star.

plus, gotta say: woody allen is one of my fave directors of all time. zemeckis one of my least favorite. (i did like contact though! and i remember liking used cars and i wanna hold your hand but haven't seen them in years. hate back to the future series. don't even really like roger rabbit or romancing the stone. the polar express was one of the worst movies i've seen in decades.)

i was really proud of myself as a little kid when i went to see forrest gump and i knew jenny had aids, like i thought it was like figuring out the sixth sense twenty minutes in. walking out you wonder how many of these grownups are thinking, that was a pretty good movie but i'm totally confused as to what kind of mysterious unknown witchcraft disease killed jenny? probably pretty much all of them. but not me - i read the editorial cartoons and memorable quotes page in newsweek.

Zelig is...eh.

― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 8 July 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)
Let me walk that back. Zelig is too reliant on its concept and I'm done long before it is.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 8 July 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)
saw zelig for the first time recently, it was okay, i am not the hugest woody allen fan in the world tho.think it's time to re-watch gump, i bet there is a lot i've forgotten. i mostly just remember... ping pong, vietnam, running, shrimp.
― one dis leads to another (ian), Sunday, 8 July 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)
I dont generally think of myself as a Gump hater, though I havent seen it since it was new/I was a teenager. Really should watch it again to see if it really is as conservative as some critics say, or if it just had the misfortune of being a film that conservatives widely embraced.
Either way, though, Zelig for sure.

It's not. However, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is just a downer version of Forrest Gump with very few redeeming qualities (if any).
