z_s' publishing debut: an american .gif hero for our times

this is not actually a book of animated .gifs

it is, however, an awesome little comic

details:
- first edition of 100 copies, 71 are for available for purchase
- first 25 will have z_s' signature (but they won't be available for shipping for a couple of weeks, and some of those are already sold on pre-orders). basically, if you want a signed one, email me first to reserve a copy and i'll let you know if we have one for you.
- cranes lettra covers screen-printed with a custom-mixed ink
- hand-sewn with brown irish linen thread
- hand-numbered
- comic is printed on thin, translucent vellum
- 8 pages
- instead of our trademark endpapers, this book features interleaved-papers... teal and chocolate coloured leaves in between each page
- special deluxe edition of this will available sometime in the coming months, but it will be limited to 26 lettered copies, only a handful of which will be available for sale and will be expensive

and also keep in mind that i'm about to post a thread for abbott's book, too

sorry these are pretty shit photos, but i wanted to get this thread up and i was out of daylight

still pumped to see what the translucent pages look like with the colored leaves in between!

when you penetrate to the most high god, you will believe you're mad (Z S), Monday, 13 December 2010 02:18 (fourteen years ago)

never would have guessed Z_S stood for Barry Lutz.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Monday, 13 December 2010 02:18 (fourteen years ago)

the ____after Z and the invisible _____ after S is my real name (or IS IT??); Barry Lutz is my pen name. I have my reasons for doing it, but the main one is pretty much that I always thought it would be cool since I was a little kid to have a pen name

when you penetrate to the most high god, you will believe you're mad (Z S), Monday, 13 December 2010 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

xpost - it looks better than we even thought... at first we thought we'd need really light colored paper, but the vellum isn't actually *that* translucent, which meant that we could use really dark, rich colors like brown and turquoise. i also kind of like how, since the colored paper is kind of heavy, it's like your story is nestled in between these other sheets, which suits the subject matter (long-repressed memory bubbling up to the surface, i mean - not bonerz).

rag photographique (ytth), Monday, 13 December 2010 02:23 (fourteen years ago)

also - what is the genesis of barry lutz? it makes me think of michael ian black saying to a monkey, 'DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM I'M BARRY LUTZ!' but maybe that is but one application of the name barry lutz.

rag photographique (ytth), Monday, 13 December 2010 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

you got it.

I once had an awkward conversation with an acquaintance that knew I was working on stuff by the name of Barry Lutz. He mentioned that his last name was Lutz, and I didn't believe him...and his last name was totally Lutz. uuuugh...sorry man

flopson, Monday, 13 December 2010 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

just a reminder dudes:

abbott also has a book

and also: please let me know in the email if you want to wait for a signed barry lutz or get an unsigned one right away

flopson: nah we're in california, we can ship this to you, it's just a dollar more that you need to add for paypal... if you don't have paypal, you can risk it and try sending US cash, we have one regular canadian customer who does this

just1n3, Monday, 13 December 2010 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

oh ok, i misread that it was 1$ in canada and not 6 + 1

this is a little chapbook of abbott's illustrations

inspired by, and originally meant to accompany, roxy's miniature family anecdotes*, these are now titled Acontextual Drawings. you lucky insiders will actually know the context but everyone else won't.

details:
- edition of 100, 75 available for purchase
- hand-sewn with blue irish linen thread
- hand-numbered
- covers are printed with archival inks on digital ground painted onto the covers
- light blue-gray vellum covers, light gray text paper
- 8 pages of drawings
- natural white vellum endpapers
- special deluxe edition of this will available sometime in the coming months, but it will be limited to 26 lettered copies, only a handful of which will be available for sale and will be expensive. each one will include a portfolio of standalone prints of the drawing.

special ilxor price of $5 incl US shipping - add $1 for canada or $3 for anywhere else. this is for each copy of the book - i will refund the difference if you order more than one and the shipping ends up being cheaper than the estimate

payment: email me your order first and then paypal us - i'm not sure how fast these will sell, so i want to confirm orders first.

keep in mind xmas shipping means these will probably take a while to get to you

and also keep in mind that i'm about to post a thread for z_s' book, too

sorry these are pretty shit photos, but i wanted to get this thread up and i was out of daylight

*a member of roxy's fam did not want the anecdotes published. sorry, folks.

no way man, they are selling these too cheaply tbh

― mookieproof, Sunday, December 12, 2010 7:39 PM (3 days ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

pricing this stuff is really, really tough tbh, lots of stuff to take into account - materials cost, paypal fees, shipping (envelopes + postage), contributor copies, inevitable freebies, damaged/unsellable copies. if we tried to price these at what they are really 'worth', no one would buy them!

― just1n3, Sunday, December 12, 2010 7:42 PM (3 days ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

oh, and sales taxes, business taxes... replacing press tools (printers etc.)... it goes on and on. we try to price stuff to at least come up even, but it doesn't usually work out that way.

obviously i liked the story, but i thought i'd throw in my two cents - my favorite thing about it is that, while a lot of autobio comics would wallow in the aftermath of the "incident" (i hesitate to call it the "climax"), the story just cuts off and lets you wonder about it. it tells the story in a lively way and then skips all the navel gazing that tends to make a lot of autobio comics run together.

ljubljana, Saturday, 15 January 2011 03:09 (fourteen years ago)

I've rarely worked on anything with a narrative, especially in a visual format, so I'm really happy that some people seem to think the story is passable, let alone that anyone would like it! tbh I was aiming for "pathetic" more than "sad", though I guess there's a lot of overlap there
