The Shiba Inu is looking sad at its exclusion from the poll. As is the St Bernard.

Yeah I'm not too keen on chihuahuas

I was in the park with Benson the other day and this little asshole chihuahua came out of nowhere and started barking and nipping at him. The thing was so nasty! I had to pick B up because the little jerk was really starting to bite him.

Shiba Inu stans can vote Akita Inu if they want, it will be counted. I went via images on Wikipedia so obviously the whole size thing got a bit confusing.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not going to stan for small yappy lapdogs but i feel they often get unfairly slated cuz of their rep - cuz they're such girly dogs, and have those associations w/being kept in handbags etc

way prefer them to pitbulls or whatever

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

See, okay, that ridiculous beast is actually a puppet/mask from The Dark Crystal. Look, you can almost SEE where the hairs were glued on around the eyes. DQ.

Yeah I hear you Lex but I've just never really met a little yappy one that I loved whereas I have met some really awesome pitbulls (who also get unfairly slated).

ENBB, Friday, 17 December 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

English Bull Terrier is surely the worst dog. I saw someone walking a huge one the other day, it was about the size of a small pig.

http://mywhitepaw.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/bull_terrier_h03.jpg

I also automatically assume that everyone who owns one of these is a racist.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

Small dogs: I really really hate the lack of dignity in the small dog that insists on bullying and shouting down all other dogs. Some people think this ridiculosity is "cute," apparently? I think it's repugnant, and my first reaction is to want to hurt them until they get a better idea of their place in the world.

I also think "ugly" means "ugly," and not, "Gather round and pity this creature before we put it to death for its own good."

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Yorkshire Terriers are nasty little shits.

lack of dignity in the small dog that insists on bullying and shouting down all other dogs

Yeah, I know. I don't think I'd ever really noticed this before recently but it's pretty horrible when they do this. I hate Yorkies.

Also I know you hate ugly dogs but the thing is that I don't think pugs, frenchies or bulldogs are ugly at all - I think they're adorable. You want ugly?

This is ugly:

re: pitbulls — There's this awesome pitbull I would visit every day in the summer who lives down the block who would always have his head stuck through the bars of the metal fence in front of the building. Once I was walking to the bus stop and I saw his owner walking him and the doggie recognized me instantly and jumped onto me, mortifying his owner.

mauricio kagel exercise (corey), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

"i hate yappy dogs" is just a bit of a let-me-prove-my-manliness/coolness cliché to me

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

It's Little Man Syndrome. If they were human those dogs would be like particularly repulsive contestants on The Apprentice.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

I think it's more that people dislike things that show their fear so blatantly. Like a giant Great Dane is probably the most loving thing ever but probably not afraid of anyone.

mauricio kagel exercise (corey), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

Stayed with a friend in Spain who had a Yorkshire terrier, a German Shepherd and some kind of bloodhound, and the Yorkshire terrier was the undisputed leader. It was weird but possibly not uncommon.

http://www.we-love-dogz.com/boxer.jpg

Repping for boxers here. They're like a pug's older cooler brother. Manly without being thuggish.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

I LOVE boxers (but the pug is just as cool ;p). There is one who lives next door and he's the cutest thing ever.

ENBB, Friday, 17 December 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

I esp love boxers with normal flappy ears like that one. :)

ENBB, Friday, 17 December 2010 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

Love boxers as long as they belong to other people. :D I just couldn't make room for that much drool in my life, but I'd like to visit it occasionally.

Jesus Christ, the apple tree! (Laurel), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

Like when they've just been at the water bowl and then you sit down and they trot over to put their chin on your knee and gaze up at you...and that's the end of whatever your knees are wearing.

Since moving in with my gf and her Dane I am continually amazed what a giant lovey doofus he is, but some people are just fucking terrified of the dude. I don't know if it's possible to be licked to death but that's probably the extent of the damage he could willingly do. He does tend to knock things over occasionally.

I take that back, she is not protective whatsoever on the leash, just aggressive. She turns into a tasmanian devil and just starts biting whatever she can get ahold of. Usually her leash but twice now it has been me.

Cow_Art, Friday, 15 August 2025 14:16 (eight months ago)

Widget also has a few dog enemies, and in general does not like Frenchies, Malinois or English bull terriers. He is in turn disliked by many Yorkies and a pack of three boxers who are tbf just having a pack mentality.

Luckily, all the owners bar the gammony couple with the miniature EBT are reasonable people whose dogs are fine whenever I run into them solo.

when i was little i earned quarter (!) each sunday for taking the big sunday newspaper up to old mrs foster, who my parents encouraged me to call "aunt" foster. it was her husband for whom our lane was named. he'd got big earth moving equipment and dug a series of ditches that drained the land and made it possible to put houses there. long dead by the time i came along, though we'd sometimes find his old empty liquor bottles where he'd thrown them out into the woods. anyway old "aunt" foster had a boston terrier named peanut and he terrified me, barking at me every time i came up that hill with the newspaper under my arm. she'd come out and shoo him away and i'd successfully make it inside and while she cut coupons out of the supplements i'd watch cartoons on her TV until i got hungry for lunch. peanut was nowhere to be seen once i'd made it inside, i guess sulking in the corner that he hadn't been able to keep the intruder at bay. anyway one time he actually fucking BIT me on my ankle, taking off the penny loafer i still had on my feet from church. that fucking dog. aunt foster didn't fuss over me or anything the old witch. i'm pretty sure i stopped going up there after that.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 15 August 2025 15:01 (eight months ago)

earned A quarter i should say

One of the few accounts I follow on Instagram is Ted from Gone Fishing. It makes me sad to see that this now-elderly dog has become a star in his own right, to the extent that his people have two books out under his name, and now he's going to appear at the London Pet Expo "signing" books and "posing" for selfies. And I just don't think that's right. I'm sure his people will be very careful, but like a dog brought to a cafe, Ted has no real way of indicating that he doesn't want to do it (other than biting somebody). I don't know. I don't like it for him. Poor old Ted.

trishyb, Saturday, 16 August 2025 08:19 (eight months ago)

five months pass...

Was in a cafe just having breakfast yesterday and the owner could hardly control her big dog. It was too big for the narrow space between the tables, they should have sat at the other end but it was nearer the door so colder, but if you are taking your dog maybe deal with it.

She feigned embarrassment at the dog's behaviour, and assumed I would find the dog charming.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 15 February 2026 14:41 (two months ago)

Tbf that’s more a shit owner problem, there are so many out there

colonic interrogation (gyac), Sunday, 15 February 2026 14:47 (two months ago)

once when when I took my dog to the pub the only table left was the one by the door. It's a dog friendly pub alongside a canal and popular rambling route. Unfortunately my embarrassing dog was trying to hard-dog any other dog that walked in, but he was muzzled and tied on the leash so no biggie. This miserable old cunt started moaning at me saying if I'm bring my dog I shouldn't sit by the door. Very nice, I said gesturing around the room.. but where the fuck else do you expect me to sit?

calzino, Sunday, 15 February 2026 14:50 (two months ago)

even in so called dog-friendly zones, dog owner on dog owner violence is an ever present danger!

calzino, Sunday, 15 February 2026 14:52 (two months ago)

I've never had a dog I would bring to even a dog-friendly pub or cafe. Health and safety rules mean you have to keep them on the floor, and none of my dogs would understand why they weren't allowed to sit up beside me. It's just the way we've always done it. I mean, it does help that I don't live in an urban area, so it's not like I'm passing pubs on my dog walk or anything.

trishyb, Sunday, 15 February 2026 14:54 (two months ago)

They’re totally fine on the floor, it’s when people think it’s ok for them to sit on seats that’s an issue. It’s got to be a pandemic dog thing, right? Lot of poorly socialised/untrained dogs with untreated separation anxiety out there?

colonic interrogation (gyac), Sunday, 15 February 2026 15:39 (two months ago)

So we brought our demon dog Lola back to the no-kill shelter that we got her from. After she bit her 8th person, including me and the dog trainer, we all agreed that it was not going to work out and I could stop trying to make it work with honor. It still felt shitty to bring her back but oh my god, the relief of not having to stress anytime someone came to the door was intense. It was like living with an abusive roommate.

Cow_Art, Sunday, 15 February 2026 16:04 (two months ago)

I had a dog like that and he lived to 12. I very stubbornly refused to get rid of him and he held us hostage for all of his 12 years. He was a good boy though -- late in life he was attacked by an offleash dog in the alley and he very valiantly protected me and my other littler dog.

I would not go through all that again. You did the right thing.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Tuesday, 17 February 2026 16:13 (two months ago)

If we didn’t have kids, and our kids friends coming over, I would have held out longer. When she jumped up and bit a tall 16 year old on his chest I pictured her doing it to a younger kid’s face and that was the end of it.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 17 February 2026 16:51 (two months ago)

Lola was, by any measure, not a good dog. I still loved her though. My nickname for her was GBBG, said in a Pepe Le Pew accent (gee bee bee gee). Girl Boss Baby Goblin.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 17 February 2026 16:54 (two months ago)

Excellent selection of dogs at the cafe/bookshop I go to earlier.

In lap of patron - Yorkshire terrier
On floor & on leads - a standard poodle, a Boston terrier, a long haired dachshund and the dog that’s the main reason I have a comment for this post today…looked like a spaniel but had ticking on its face and legs. Mainly blue-black and white in colour. Mainly I’m asking is this a standard colour for any breed of spaniel or is it likely to be a mix? Thought it was adorable. Please see artist’s impression, the handwriting says plumy tail.

https://i.postimg.cc/SxgqF8PT/IMG-0245.jpg

Shout out also to the owners who had all the dogs calm and orderly, not easy when there’s strangers with other dogs there.

two weeks pass...

our older girl’s Cushings diagnosis is starting to become more apparent— she’s having more and more trouble with her hind legs. have to carry her up and down stairs 75% of the time. she still loves to bound about a little at the park and chew on her toys, though.

having a conversation with our vet about it this week. we don’t want to prolong her suffering, also just need someone who can give us honest talk about when it is time.

honestly even thinking about it makes me ugly cry, this dog has been an instrumental part of my life and our life together for nearly 12 years.

i used to give my dog an ice cream once or twice each summer, it was something we could both look forward to since i loved watching him eat it so much. when he started getting up there in age i decided to film it and made it into an endless loop so i could watch him eat ice cream forever. he lived another 5 years after this, almost to the day!
when I look at old photos, i only feel estrangement somehow. but i can watch this video for hours at a time sometimes, and it’s like he’s still here to tickle all my troubles away
