Watching Mississippi Burning now and I'm like, "how the hell did this Walking Tall For Liberals get nominated for best film?" Then I saw the competition and was like, "oh."

(rain man won, btw)

Kael's been discussed a lot today, but her review of MB was one of the first film essays that really shook me up.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

Dangerous Liasons, without hesitation. One of my favorite films: a costume drama that draws blood. I think Malkovich, Pfeiffer, and Close are perfectly cast despite not being anyone's idea of pre-Revoutionary fops.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

haven't seen Accidental Tourist but I have a hard time imagining loving anything with William Hurt in the lead. Liasions def seems to hold up the best in hindsight of the other four.

da croupier, Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

Um I seriously can't get vote for anything here...And this is 1988, right?

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

Working Girl is...okay. Since it's the eighties (a)Sigourney Weaver plays the bitch villanness (b) Harrison Ford is cast in a comedy (c) Melanie Griffith gets laurels for this instead of Something Wild.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

yes, Dangerous Liaisons, and yes films of 1988

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

the ceremony was 1989 - forgot to double check if Eric's earlier polls followed that or the release dates, sorry.

da croupier, Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

Unlike some other years, I've actually seen all of these (though The Accidental Tourist was probably 1990 or so). While I love the spectacle of Dangerous Liasons, Mississippi Burning is the one that satisfies my lizard brain the most.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

Mississippi Burning comes down to a black man getting strung up in extreme close-up every forty minutes or so.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

and the FBI making us all free

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 22 December 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

Rain Man is the only one of these I've ever seen and that not since I was 14. No real desire to see any of the others, so I guess it wins by default?

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:21 (fifteen years ago)

Please don't vote.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

Don't worry I wasn't going to screw up you sensitive film guys' poll. I figured after my comment it could go pretty much unsaid that I wouldn't vote. I just like reading these.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

I'll give you ten dollars to vote for DL.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

See this lineup is exactly why I hate the Oscars in the '80s.

benanas foster (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:40 (fifteen years ago)

Just the '80s?

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

mississippi burning isnt that bad... its a solid lil thriller w/some neat performances... and a lot of gross stuff too, but

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMf0MTweXYc (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

The Oscars were bad in other ways in other decades, but the '80s was the decade in which they actively seemed to be seeking boredom.

benanas foster (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

A.O. Scott's article from earlier this year about the peculiarities of eighties film nailed.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:50 (fifteen years ago)

it.

nm, found it

thermite art (latebloomer), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

Dangerous Liaisons was one face-stabbing scene away from Eric's approval.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

didn't you once say you preferred Valmont?

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

I've never seen Valmont!

might take all of these (even RM and MB) over The Social Network, The Fighter, Black Swan, The King's Speech and The Kids Are All Right.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

wow. Black Swan and The Fighter don't offend like Mississippi Burning does.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 13:08 (fifteen years ago)

DL by a mile. the casting is so great that i couldn't actually get those actors out of my head when i read the book, which was slightly annoying.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

Like there was any other choice.

benanas foster (Eric H.), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

might take all of these (even RM and MB) over The Social Network, The Fighter, Black Swan, The King's Speech and The Kids Are All Right

65 percent challops, by my calculations

benanas foster (Eric H.), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

is 'the accidental tourist' movie really that bad? i liked the book

where they douthat at (donna rouge), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

It's not bad, but it IS stiff and pompous. William Hurt is well cast in a self-parodic way. Geena Davis' kookiness is more than I can take.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

I might be mistaken, but Geena Davis invented the prototype of the the supporting actress playing a lovable kook who wins an Oscar.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

I was about to ask what people thought of Accidental Tourist. Like Alf said it's not bad, but there's just... nothing likable about it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMf0MTweXYc (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

tempted to draw parallels b/w Up In The Air

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMf0MTweXYc (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

is the book worth a read then?

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 December 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

It's a fine book.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 23 December 2010 04:35 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

working girl is a terrifically constructed film. feel like it has enduring historical value in terms of cultural values, phobias, and shoulderpads as of a certain moment in time.

eric banana (s.clover), Saturday, 15 February 2014 20:01 (twelve years ago)

eight months pass...

Rain Man. Talk about middlebrow craftsmanship.
