Is ILX the most intelligent, articulate and considerate board on the web? If not, what is (excluding twin site ILM of course)?

It's the best I've found in those qualities and many others. There is the one for me and my friends, and I do like one Yahoo group centred around Modern and Postmodern literature, but nicely eclectic, called Spiral-Bound, linked to The Modern Word, but the sheer number of highly intelligent and articulate and knowledgeable and friendly and imaginative and fun people here is unparalleled in my experience.

This is the nicest public place on the interweb I've ever been involved in. An ex-occasional poster remarked to me that he got sick of the place becaue we were all so damn reasonable.

RickyT, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The most reactionary against newcomers?

david h(0wie), Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No. The 'jump on new poster who says something stupid' effect is present and correct, but this is pretty much standard for bboards, usenet and public mailing lists.

You have all been very kind and welcoming to me.

I think you're smashing - and agree wholeheartedly with Martin that you are a very intelligent, articulate, funny and friendly crowd. (I ruined a keyboard within the first week of lurking here, as I accidentally spat Coca-Cola on it. I learned very quickly not to drink anything while reading amusing posts)

There is a bit of a reaction against newcomers, I think. Not so much hostile as intolerant - you get no leeway for the odd dumb or apparently dumb comment until you're a bit established, I think. Even so, I don't think this is surprising or terribly unreasonable, and I bet there are many places where it's much worse.

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So I guess the ILx meta-phase cycle has come 'round again.

Actually this is one of the only boards I've seen where it's okay to have a difference of opinion and can still have a meaningful discussion without resorting to the "Im right-your wrong" arguement seen at other places...Plus I haven't had anyone full on attack me...you all play nice :-)

brg30, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i agree, i think ile is probably the best web board i've seen as far as the above mentioned things go, and also as far as humour and wit go. it's never boring to read, and when people argue they (usually) do it with style, wit, and intelligence. there's a good mix of people here and basically i think it's a pretty damn cool forum (or whatever).

sand.y, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't remember anybody being attacked. what were some examples?

Ron, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

livejournal communities can be quite nice, but they tend to be more just collections of individual postings rather than discussions.

Maria, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the first couple of months after i came around there was a fairly active drive to be hospitable to newcomers, constant updates to the introducions thread on ILM, etc. this has seemed to fade since that time. maybe it goes through phases. i haven't been here long enough to say.

Ron, Sunday, 4 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck you all

hurrah for Queene G!

I think there are more intelligent boards which aren't so considerate, and I think there are more considerate boards which aren't so intelligent. What makes ILE good is that there's usually something here for more people even if the general arsing about turns them off.

Tom, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
yes we are

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. The first thing i posted on ILM was immediately pounced upon as a forgery (Hi, Horace!).

It's traumatized me to this very day....

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 27 July 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

There's been a smattering of "this place sucks, you people are stupid / have no taste / smell like day-old urine" rhetoric in certain threads, which goes against the subject of this thread, but damn I just wish the folks quick to generalize would just stop w/ the pointless hyperbole & accept that there's always going to be some element on this board (or any other thing of this nature) that will be disagreeable & not bitch about it as if it's a crippling epidemic.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

but you do all smell like day-old urine. I like it, makes me feel at home.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought home was week-old urine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe for Navy brats, yeah

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

*cries*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 July 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)
