How Do We Feel About Matt Damon?

The dude works so often that I've taken him for granted, but he's quietly built an impressive body of work: nothing spectacular -- he still seems like a supporting actor experimenting with leading man status -- but worth citing.

Maybe the most consistent H'wood male actor of the 00s.

I love the second one. Depp is more obviously leading man material: he reaches out to the audience like Nicholson or the Harrison Ford of the Indy movies (not an endorsement of Deep's acting btw).

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

Damon is recessive and furtive; that's partly what makes him ideal casting in the Bourne movies (and why it's easy to imagine him turning into a zombie by the time The Bourne Inferno is released in 2017).

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

to me Damon's secret weapon is how funny he can be -- i've been thinking about doing a poll thread of his best comedic roles (The Informant, 30 Rock, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, even the Ocean's movies really, etc.)

hann am0n tana (some dude), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

the 'supporting actor' cliché has as an element of truth in that he has the sort of generic appearance that police sketch artists must dread

he is like an avatar of civilized american values, even more colourless than clooney

Thread inspired, btw, by how terrific he is in True Grit; he's become canny about choosing parts which exploit his aging-frat-guy looks.

Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

A local weekly singled him out for his work this year:

Most Valuable Player

Matt Damon distinguished himself in just about every way possible in 2010 – charging righteously through Paul Greengrass’s Green Zone, playing a soulful seer in Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, narrating Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job, turning in one of the savviest performances of his career as a puffed-up Texas Ranger in True Grit...and just crushing it as Liz Lemon’s boyfriend Carol Burnett on 30 Rock.

Rounders is my favorite performance of his.

clemenza, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)

green zone kinda gives lie to 'well chosen roles'

he did ok but script was pish

Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

On the one hand, I'm glad he chooses things like The Talented Mr Ripley and The Good Shepard, and up for the challenge; on the other, the Hollywood tricks let him down.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

*and is up for the challenge

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

Green Zone and Hereafter are both horrible but Damon is fine in both.

The Talented Mr Ripley is a serious bowdlerization of the novel: sentimental and soft even if, like I did, you enjoyed the Italian settings and the delicious supporting cast. Damon could easily have handled the sociopathic ambisexual that Patricia Highsmith created; instead he has to look doe-eyed and recite speeches about wanting to be an attractive nobody or whatever.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

oops, image didn't work the first time xp

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

it's ok -- I can imagine his Hollywood smile and him turning tricks for me.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

I can see why he did Green Zone, even though the script was a giant misfire in every way - he wanted to do another movie w/Greengrass that had some of that bourne juice w/o doing another sequel, was a chance to tackle ~important issues of the day~

xp I was gonna say earlier that it would've been great to see him do a FUN Ripley movie.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

He was perfectly cast in True Grit, his comedy skills showed off pretty well (LOVE that scene where he flashes Mattie his US Marshall badge with that look like UH HUH GET A LOAD OF THIS, so tongue in cheek but playing it totally straight.)

Loved all of the Bourne movies, Good Will Hunting, Mr Ripley, Good Shepherd...really love him in 30 Rock, and his stuff on Entourage was hilarious. I think he's hottest when he's being funny.

Hereafter looked so dire not even Damon could get me to watch that one.

Square-Panted Sponge Robert (VegemiteGrrrl), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

i think this dude is great btw. probably the most consistent hwood star of the 00s in terms of quality of projects. way more staying power than affleck though i admire how both of them have carved out semi-weird little niches for themselves

max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

re ben affleck, i hadn't seen him in anything until the town, and was tryna remember what he looked like the next day but kept thinking of adam sandler

I'm hoping he becomes like Paul Newman in the seventies and eighties: less to prove, so he walks into any old project and blows everyone off screen.
