frasier awesome

kraudive, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

its frasier man why'd u spell it that way multiple tims.e...

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

its not surprising that perhaps the best ever season of the simpsons didnt get nominated but was really surprised that such a stellar season of roseanne (they got like 38 million viewers for an episode, lol) lost out to home improvement (ummmm)

all comedy programs are terrible, the only thing good about these shows is that they are in the past where nobody can see them

plax (ico), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

larry sanders > seinfeld > frasier > mad about you > home improvement

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

i mostly just started this thread to laugh at home improvement

also to misspell the names of award-winng television comedies

╰㊂-㊂╯ (Lamp), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

home improvement is one of the few sitcoms i've ever seen that gets worse the more you watch it (generally subpar shows go from terrible to guilty pleasure when you've seen them enough -- not HI tho!)

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

also re "was trying to make the claim that this was the strongest year for american television comedy" i would actually say that the last year was the greatest year for american television comedy in history

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

i proudly voted for HI - loved that show when i was a kid - sorry yall dont have souls

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

did u love when tim allen barked at the camera? that was so awesome!

barring larry sanders you can pretty much turn to any cable station in the us and see at least one of these

i proudly voted for HI - loved that show when i was a kid - sorry yall dont have souls

was wondering if ud rep for this... vaguely familiar w/ the general criticism of its aesthetic and worldview but the coupla times ive seen the show its just tremendously unfunny

like the grunting and the gender absolutism and shit is w/e but the jokes were p bad idk

╰㊂-㊂╯ (Lamp), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

oh man, the gender politics in HI are so terrible. the lesson of every episode is that Jill wants Tim to be a strong manly man for her

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

also the outfits are *the worst*

plax (ico), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:12 (fourteen years ago)

all outfits in 1994 were the worst!

=(^ • ‿‿ • ^)= (corey), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

the kids are terrible people in HI, one of my greatest cinematic joys of 1999 was seeing the oldest kid get his nuts ripped off by a harpoon in 'the rage: carrie 2'

omar little, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:26 (fourteen years ago)

all outfits in 1994 were the worst!

I think this was around the time my mom was watching TNG and complaining that Starfleet uniforms weren't made of denim. "It's really all anyone wears anymore. You'd think it would be the official uniform of the future!" I do not miss denim shirts.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

does anybody remember motor alley this was also terrible in a similar way it had haley joel osment and the mom was always fn crying

Ditto again, at least as relates the top two. (Don't know Frasier that well, the other two not at all.)

clemenza, Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

anything but Seinfeld is challops, look at how many goddamn classic episodes are in the 93-94 season: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seinfeld_(season_5)

washa flocka brain (some dude), Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

its questionable whether larry sanders was really better than seinfeld that year but neither of them touch roseanne or the simpsons

╰㊂-㊂╯ (Lamp), Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

i have never seen roseanne

plax (ico), Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

It was brilliant in the first half of its run.

I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:29 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, Roseanne and Simpsons this year own all five of these shows COMBINED.

children with wasting diseases (Phil D.), Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

93-94 was Larry Sanders second season; not as brilliant as the third or fourth season, but still Larry Sanders. Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and Roseanne are probably my second, third, and fourth favourite shows ever--definitely Seinfeld and The Simpsons, or vice-versa. But if you believe, as I do, that Larry Sanders was the greatest sitcom ever, picking any season over any season of any other show is automatic.

tim got the line wrong! isaiah thomas won't stop laughing! tim got the line wrong!! tim ran into the door! tim started laughing out of nowhere! bloooopers! tim threw a ball and the neighbor didn't catch it! again! tim fell down! the board fell off the table! tim got the line wrong! al got the line wrong! al started laughing for no reason! al can't remember the line! jill laughs at how loud the music is! TIM'S PICKING HIS NOOOOOOSE!! slow motion fall into the portapottie? tim can't walk across the room properly! jill got the line wrong! jtt doesn't like something! tim's making the sub sandwich fly around like a submarine and al just can't take it!! tim can't remember the line! tim fell down! tim has funny hands and al just can't take it!!

ok i can't continue

The Simpsons goes in the Emmys' oustanding animated program category (and is nominated almnost every year), not oustanding comedy series, so let's not all huff and puff like it was unjustly shut out in '94 or anything

washa flocka brain (some dude), Thursday, 6 January 2011 01:31 (fourteen years ago)

Does beardo there still host Family Feud?

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Thursday, 6 January 2011 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

yah shuffling the simpsons off into its some ghetto of a category is just as much a fuck u as str8 up not nominating i guess? like i dont think there are actual rules that best comedy has to be live action or w/e are there?

i mean its a p strong year for tv comedy - the final kids in the hall season, murphy brown hell even the nanny is p lol its just weird to see home improvement & mad about you both getting nominated and a not that good 1st season of frasier. like home improvement was at least the highest-rated sitcom on tv that season but mad about you got worse ratings than wings (wings!)

well, a year or two back Family Guy bucked the trend by submitting themselves for an outstanding comedy nomination instead of animated program (apparently it's either/or) and they got it, so i'm assuming the Simpsons folks have just chosen to stick w/ the animated program category where they're guaranteed a nomination and a likely win

washa flocka brain (some dude), Thursday, 6 January 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

The linking "animations" on Home Improvement are the nadir of western civilization.

JTT might have cancer episode wasn't bad.

it also takes hip-hip with it (Eric H.), Thursday, 6 January 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

i seem to remember the showrunners talking on one of the episode commentaries abt getting snubbed by the emmys when they did submit for best comedy - p sure theres an opening credits gag about it - but it obv doesnt really matter at all

the mid 90s musta been a strange time to watch tv

feel like grace under fire coulda been a really good show

havent seen it since i was lil but i remember thinking the neighbor whose face you never saw was a funny cool bro, idk it didnt seem better or worse than any other sitcom & had some strong characters like mr. beard - mid-90s outfits are the best of course, everyone should dress like its 1994 24/7

Princess TamTam, Thursday, 6 January 2011 11:17 (fourteen years ago)

I voted Frasier, only because it was my favorite show when I was around 8-16 years of age.
I sort of miss old school sitcoms but people bitch too much about "laugh tracks". Unless it's some compilation show with special effects like Alf or Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, the show was probably filmed in front of an audience on a sound stage, so that laughter is real. I'm getting tired as hell of people knocking older sitcoms because they are filmed with the old format. "I don't want to be told when to laugh" is the excuse. Oh shut up.

Rotating & Blunders (MintIce), Friday, 7 January 2011 04:02 (fourteen years ago)

Compilation? I mean complicated. I hate Firefox spell check.

Rotating & Blunders (MintIce), Friday, 7 January 2011 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

never watched larry sanders show (should get on that I guess) but watched the rest pretty frequently as a kid

at this point I would rather watch a mad about you rerun than a frasier/home improvement rerun, mostly out of curiousity. but seinfeld is the easy winner, feels basically ingrained in our culture at this point.

and yeah the simpsons is 100x better I wonder even if it had been nominated, were cartoons taken seriously enough at the time? was it universally popular enough by then? I don't remember, I was 8.

iatee, Friday, 7 January 2011 04:20 (fourteen years ago)

i mean its a p strong year for tv comedy - the final kids in the hall season, murphy brown hell even the nanny is p lol

man I would rather watch the nanny than basically any current sitcom, pretty good show

friends debuted in 1994 iirc

max, Friday, 7 January 2011 04:27 (fourteen years ago)

yah the 94 emmys are for the 93-94 season friends 1st season is 94-95 - the show did get nom'd itc the next year

1st year of friends is p good tho, yah

╰㊂-㊂╯ (Lamp), Friday, 7 January 2011 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

i watched a lot of Home Improvement as a kid. can't stomach it at all now, it's pretty bad.

my family loved some Frasier. haven't seen a lot of it in recent years, but i think it's a solid sitcom.

Seinfeld is all time and i've just started watching the Larry Sanders Show for the first time this week (Netflix) and i totally fucking love it. really just a toss up between Larry Sanders and Seinfeld. i don't know how these particular seasons stacked up.

circa1916, Friday, 7 January 2011 04:41 (fourteen years ago)

I've never seen Larry Sanders! Loved Seinfeld so much that year. I even got SeinLanguage for Christmas.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 7 January 2011 05:18 (fourteen years ago)

SeinLanguage was so disappointing.

Jouster, Friday, 7 January 2011 06:23 (fourteen years ago)

In retrospect, yes.

(OK, Larry Sanders was on HBO in the US. I was wondering why I never even heard of it.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 7 January 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

some episodes of frasier are really fawlty towers-level old-school farce. i dunno how good the first season was though because i only ever see these in random-access reruns and the only way i have of vaguely knowing what era they're from is the length of kelsey grammar's pseudo-mullet.

difficult listening hour, Friday, 7 January 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

the kids are terrible people in HI, one of my greatest cinematic joys of 1999 was seeing the oldest kid get his nuts ripped off by a harpoon in 'the rage: carrie 2'

seinfeld

Moonlight Graham (chrisv2010), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

the funniest thing about HI was the escalating lengths they went to to hide the neighbor's face; IIRC there was one episode where he literally was just standing there with his hand over his face for no real reason

also I vaguely remember the show being about the subversion of the manly man stereotype in that Tim was a fucking disaster at all of his caveman things re: family dynamics and his wife ended up saving him most of the time (think of it as "the white 'Martin'")

also I remember the show really sucking

Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 7 January 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)
