A satisfying practice of acquiring knowledge along the possible road to enlightenment or a fruitless endeavor serving only to further alienate oneself from the common (wo)man?

you must be smart if you use words like 'errata'. Well done for getting an education!

only if you fix them.

Endless Consumption of Cultural Errata = greater comprehension of Mystery Science Theater 3000 = neverending mirth.

:-) These kind of comments are why I love Mike so. :-)

You assume the common (wo)man is something static, and not relative to one's perspective. Also, that proximity to the common (wo)man is desirable...The only absolute: the hilarity of Mystery Science Theater 3000, for no other reason that Thomas Pynchon is the daddy.

What the hell is happening to ILx?

Sam, Tuesday, 6 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we might be entering the post-ILx era.

not meaning to be smart, but my dictionary doesn't list the word errata...i assume it is derrived from the word error, but what exactly does it mean?

robin, Friday, 9 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i was considering either asking this on robin's other thread, or making a new one, but if nobody minds i will ask this question here: i encounter people who seem to have read every book, seen every movie, heard every band, achieved staggering levels of education, know computers and programming, etc. etc. etc. and i was just wondering - when exactly do you have the time to do all this?? I am not trying to be confrontational either, this really does mystify me. If my question does sound a bit snotty it's only because i am a bit jealous (and a bit guilty of mental laziness) Any thoughts, am I crazy? Eh, now I don't even want to post this anymore, but i guess I will...

i know what you mean, those sort of people inspire a mixture of jealousy and admiration in me,and i usually come to the conclusion that they musn't sleep...also,i think there is a certain type of person who is focused enough to read what they plan on reading without interruption, and then people like myself who are always reading ten books at once, have about seven browser windows open at any given time, and thus don't get through things half as quickly...i often think that if i spent half the time i spend browsing in bookshops and looking through other people's bookshelves actually reading,i'd be considerably better read than i am,similarly,if i spent less time worrying about whether i will remember what i am reading and more time just reading the damn thing i'd be well on my way to being one of those people...

robin, Friday, 9 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i fear that i will never read another book since i got this fekking computer :-(

Ron, Saturday, 10 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's cool that you spend so much time on the computer Ron

maryann, Saturday, 10 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

maryann, although i don't know you very well, your brain is one of the ones which i admire.

Ron, Saturday, 10 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Errata means roughly, a list of errors. Latin, plural of erratum. Perhaps in place of this I should of used ephemera, but I liked the way errata sounded. Thanks to recent answers to this post ending up in my mailbox, I realized that ILE is back up and running, hurrah! I was lanquishing over on the prototype board, not realizing all of the possibilities for endless consumption I was missing over here!
