like "see u sooooooon" and "i'm heeeeeeere" and "where u aaaaaaat?"
mostly girls as a kind of kawaii affectation and it don't bug me but i've been seeing it a LOT more among women in their 20's and 30's just lately and i dunno if this is a nyt trend or what.

They are signalling you that they are actually in the midst of a fall from a great height. Show some empathy.

As Phil has pointed out tho, those whom usually do this are sort of oblivious to the concept of elongating vowels actually making sense.

ulp Guilty but only where I would draw out or or emphasize the word if it were spoken aloud. Like, "Reeeeeally?" in a disbelieving way that ends on a lower tone.

maybe ur right, i feel like this is fine w/ consonts. but mfing awful w/ vowels

plax (ico), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

Gonna take a guess and say that since it "became cool" to not capitalize & such it seems near bizarre to type what would usually go in caps when you can just hold down on the letter key for a little more while than usual. If that made sense.

It's just that caps have been so often associated w/ BEING REALLY FUCKING ANGRY that it seems the whole trend bore out of wanting to accentuate something without looking like it was emotionally driven nor leaving that air of "absolute chillness" that one tends to associate with a relaxed dude/chick lazily typing on their computer with indifference for what THE MAN/TEACHER says they should do with how they letter things. If that made sense.

hah i do this but i am always q pedantic about which letter i massively reduplicate and so have, in truth, spent significant seconds of typing time thinking over whether 'hooooooooooooooooome' is correct or not.

but i hear it every time like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orOdMu6fuZQ

predeep natsvitika (forksclovetofu), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

i am a male and i do this from time to time. deeeefinitely disgusting savagery of the highest order to do it in ways that don't make sense though, and yeah on occasions i've spent far too long thinking through how to do it right. (if the occasion arose for an elongated 'home' i'd probably end up resorting to teary resignation and refraining entirely. maybe try to find another word to elongate instead.)

I always thought it was used to express excitement or cheeriness into dry texts where you otherwise wouldn't be able to decipher the tone. Obviously there are better ways to do it but thats how I've seen it (over) used.
