I have to admit this poll was inspired by General Halftrack's fabulous star pajamas! They are so Marc Bolan!

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

also i love that beetle bailey used to be a totally different comic before it was about the army. so trippy.

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

Sarge is def the heart of Beetle Bailey with a charisma the titular character could never really muster imo

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

When he married Blondie, his rich family disowned him, and he had to join the army.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

Always liked Cookie. Seemed like a dude.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

I think General Halftrack is genuinely hilarious!

u know what's a messed up comic strip? snuffy smith

am0n, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 02:47 (fourteen years ago)

when was the Sarge dog introduced? i always felt like he was an attempt to get in on the very popular animals on the comics page situation

I like this hypothesis but M0rt did a shit job of it bcz he is just a tiny military jerk with a dog head.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i never got why barney google was still in the title

votewise id probably go with beetle for his consistent trolling of sarge

am0n, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

actually he was just lazy wasn't he and sarge would just pound the crap out of him for it

am0n, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

I have no idea who Rocky and COsmo are tbh!

Cosmo had a bigger role in the early BB strips, basically his schtick was that he bartered for everything with everyone. I don't think he's been in the strips for decades, except for an occasional cameo. Rocky is a "greaser" type of rock & roll fellow, used to represent counterculture in the strip (though it was a bit unclear why such a guy would ever enlist in the army).

BTW, you forgot to include Martha Halftrack and Corporal Yo.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Martha is at the bottom. I don't really why you'd be sad at he exclusion as she's just the instigator/punchline of "ain't wives harpies?" jokes. I will, however, apologize for the exclusion of Yo.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

reading this strip as a kid I used to wonder "why aren't these guys in vietnam"

although thread has made me realize how good most of the names in this strip are. "lieutenant jackson flap". "amos t. halftrack" is pretty perelman.

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe next I will have Beetle Bailey minor characters poll so all three interested people can rack up a vote for Dr. Bonkus or whoever.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

Through this poll I've come to realize that Beetle Bailey himself is just a cipher.

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

voted for halftrack btw because he looks like my friend's dad who was in the air force and when i was a kid i basically thought they were the same person.

In the Calvin & Hobbes 10th Anniversary book, Watterson defends his practices (insisting on writing/penciling/inking every strip himself without assistants) by saying something like, "Maybe some cartoonists can meet their standards of quality and be on the golf course by noon, but that's not how I work." It seemed to be directed at Walker, and in fact (in the awful Watterson "bio" that came out last year) Walker said he loved C&H but thought Watterson was kind of a dick.

Not going to tell people how to vote but moustache gives away his erections sounds like the ilx choice to me

Actually more the ilm choice when I think about it

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 04:54 (fourteen years ago)

Hi & Lois was much more different back in the day. Lois was a starry housewife with yellow pills in her eyes and Hi was a cigarette-smokin' Mad Man kind of guy.

They later wrote Beetle out and pulled Chip's hat over his eyes.

Also, Beetle's original name was Spider.

(Trip Store is right. You learn many interesting things by going to school in Mid-Missouri.)

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:10 (fourteen years ago)

in the old smithsonian book of newspaper comics (the best book ever!) it says something about how hi and lois has "a not always obvious element of distaste and even dislike."

it always surprises me how funny vintage beetle bailey strips are when i see them, like the '50s/'60s ones. i'd probably even buy a volume or two if they did the complete set.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, the old strips are really funny, I recommend checking them out if you have the chance.
