btw I would like to make it clear that I support a certain degree of autonomy but I do not think that absolute separation is necessarily the answer - I am internationalist rather than nationalist and I think that as long as the language, customs and preferred methods of governance are preserved and respected by the Spanish authorities, a system similar to the United Kingdom is perfectly viable - indeed, a system where borders don't even matter, but that the collective will is in charge.
Thing is, as things stand, these customs are not being respected.
It is a tricky situation, but I want to stress that there is a people being oppressed here, and a people who would rather resolve their situation non-violently.
'Separatism' will move away from borders and flags, and towards regions of autonomy and self-governance.

Also, the Basques have a sword dance that has key similarities to the Scottish style! Scholars suspect a common origin blah blah.

if the desire for a traditionally socialist state (indeed, the state with the oldest language in Europe) to escape the oppressive and exploitative rule of the Spanish (not least under the practically neofascist People's Party) is a half-baked left-wing idea, maybe you'd like to tell that to the hundreds of youths imprisoned and tortured for belonging to nonviolent political think-tanks, maybe you'd like to tell it to the people whose parties have been banned from competing in elections and whose language was outlawed until as late as the 1970s
