Emma Thompson: Search and Destroy

Overexposed in the nineties, so she's underrated now, but I still look forward to her appearances.

Search: Howards End, Much Ado About Nothing, Carrington, Primary Colors, and Wit.

Destroy: Stranger Than Fiction. Awful film.

Search: The Tall Guy

I have a soft spot for this film and for Thompson's performance in it.

Not really a fan, but she made a great Hillary in Primary Colors.

For a while I thought she had everything I wanted from an actress: intelligence, wit, good-not-great looks, wide range.

Would Still Smash

Another movie of hers that I like a lot is Angels in America--also Mike Nichols--although I don't specifically remember her performance, beyond that she played the guardian angel (I think...).

yeah I was trying to remember the name of that.

I liked that when Hugh Grant was arrested over that Prossie, some paper asked EThom what her reaction would have been if her husband Kenneth Branagh had been caught instead. She was all "It wouldn't bother me, actually, whatever", and 2 weeks later they announced their official splitup.

Liked her in Sense and Sensibility. Impressive crying.

(Forgotten how many of the best Austen adaptations were '95. S&S fine, lags behind BBC Persuasion & Clueless.)

xxp he gives one of the best movie performances ever in Nil By Mouth. certainly the best drunk i've ever seen. the best non-Oscar nominated performance of the 90s bar none.

Two words: Tutti Frutti

Great red hair, cavorting around Glasgow and the grimmer parts of Northern Scotland in the mid-80s with Robbie Coltrane, thee mighty Maurice Roeves et al.

I remember the comedy series; it was the Portlandia of its day.

yeah Staunton, Coltrane.. all her showbiz chums. Stephen Fry has an excellent bitchy rant in his 2nd autobiog about how Coltrane went from a fancy public shool but sometime later emerged as "a lowborn grease-monkey.. " changing his name and his accent as he did so.

ray winston is rubbish

barney thomson was a no bad wee film. easy for me to like as a glaswegian emigrant just delighted to see places like the barras, bridgeton cross, the saracen head (interior and exterior) and the red road flats on the big screen. far from perfect but emma thompson was cracking in it, hilariously harsh auld glaswegian bingo denizen maw. best glaswegian accent from an english actor p much ever.

her mum's from glasgow and she lived in scotland for a long time.
