At least as far as Yahoo is concerned. Lol @ "Zillow" being one of the main resources for the article though.

I used to drive through Kenilworth on the way home from my old job and there truly are some o_O houses (or, well, compounds really) there. Even the ones you can see from the road, because most of them are well hidden by long drives and foliage.

Okay, well I thought it was interesting. I never would have guessed that a town in Kansas would make a list like this. Suppose I should have made it "worst" instead.

where does the mission hills kansas money come from?

iatee, Thursday, 20 January 2011 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

Good question, anyone familiar with that area?

They drank someone's milkshake...

Yes Kenilworth is something else - Take Lake Shore Drive up to Sheridan and drive north for about 10 minutes past Evanston, IL and get wowwed ...

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 20 January 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, when my wife and I first started dating, Evanston was halfway between my work and hers so we would end up meeting there and taking that very drive you speak of.

I lived for six miserable years in Evanston - thank god I'm in Chicago again - buncha alpha males slinging scat - daily 'Lance Armstrong wannabes' on Sheridan at all hours of the afternoon 'cause I figure someone else was doin' the work - I'm not that bitter

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 20 January 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

Evanston's not that bad, but then I live on the "bad side" next to Skokie so I don't have to deal with the types you are talking about very often.

Holy shit at that Kansas hood $$$. Making $250k in suburban Kansas must be like making $1.5M in NYC/SF/LA, right?

so uh, golf + random rich people who like kansas I guess

iatee, Thursday, 20 January 2011 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

My filthy rich uncle bought 286 acres in Westlake for about $1.5M in the '80s when it just a bunch of ranchland and a post office. He can now sell 1/2 acre lots for almost $1M each, but not sure what he's done with it. It's a sore spot in the fam b/c my dad prospected this property and had a handshake agreement to buy it when my uncle swooped in and bought if out from underneath him. Me, I am dirt poor so not braggin.

mission hills is leafy inner ring kansas city suburbs, 1920s-'40s vintage. sort of weird to see it on a list like this, but i guess it's got the right mix of highly paid professionals, really rich people, and zero cheap housing that would muck up its household income. it's entirely houses + 3 country clubs.

Never heard of Mission Hills, but nearby Overland Park I remember from Thomas Frank's What's the Matter with Kansas? as being very well-to-do.

Have to hand it to Kenilworth for staying low key. Some of these places seem like pimp city.

Never saw this. Not directly neat it, but certainly within easy walking distance.
