Oh, there's a rolling thread? OK.

Just to open with: I managed to get iplayer to install and work on our Wii, and watched the Sister Rosetta Tharpe documentary last night.

Pretty good pic/sound quality too!

rosetta "didn't it rain" tharpe? awesome, i will seek out

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 21 January 2011 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it ws great.

Mark G, Friday, 21 January 2011 11:37 (fourteen years ago)

BBC4 had a repeat of the Iron Maiden Flight 666 documentary on Friday, now on iPlayer. Hugely entertaining and the dedication and intensity of their Latin American fans is wonderful to behold.

The Killing is fantastic telly.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00xg3tn/Gary_Tank_Commander_Series_2_Tank_Goodness/

Gary: Tank Commander - very very Scottish in its appeal, but I watched three episodes of this last night and laughed for a solid hour. I'm a bit late to the party with this one but I couldn't find any mention of it on ilx. I'm not as big on the "sketches" that break up the narrative but the characters are perfect, especially Gary's sister.

o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 09:01 (fourteen years ago)

Has anyone watched this new SF thing Outcasts?

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it was not bad, well produced and shot, no embarrassing polystyrene sets or wooden acting. I'm gonna stick with it for a while at least, they've set up a fair few cliffhangers and "i wonder where they're going with this" devices. I'll need some convincing that the characters are interesting or likeable enough for the long haul though.

hoisin crispy mubaduck (ledge), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 10:08 (fourteen years ago)

Looks like they're keeping the sci-fi pretty light. Earth-like planet, near-future technology, no aliens (yet). Obligatory shot of two moons.

hoisin crispy mubaduck (ledge), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 10:14 (fourteen years ago)

It (Outcasts) needs a bit more oomph.

the most cuddlesome bug that ever was borned (James Morrison), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 10:50 (fourteen years ago)

Just watched the first episode, it's certainly intriguing and well-made enough for me to be on board for a few more. Probably partly the presence of Lee Adama, but it very much reminded me of a planet-bound Galactica.

it is! no one else is watching it? i thought scando crime stuff was super popular

just sayin, Thursday, 10 February 2011 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

Any love for Human Planet? I was a bit put off by the melodramatic music and v/o at first, but this is astonishing stuff. I've watched the first four now, and there hasn't been a sequence yet that hasn't completely gripped me.

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:23 (fourteen years ago)

YES!

Human Planet is fantastic. And John Hurt so is the perfect narrator for it too. Always looking forward to the behind-the-scenes thing at the end too, it's a valuable addition. Because this series really makes you go "How were they just present when this happened?" "How the hell did they film this shot?"

Will never forget the shot of a tribe deep in the Brazilian rainforest. A plane flew over taking note of where the 70 odd tribes are that have never met other human beings and live in their own world basically. One tribe man ducked down for the plane, it was clearly visible. And hopefully they will never be seen or will see other people again. Staggering.

La descente infernale (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

Always looking forward to the behind-the-scenes thing at the end too

Particularly enjoyed the return of the crazy french balloon man from Planet Earth.

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

Outcasts still keeping me interested, guessing. Bit unsure tho if some bits, e.g. strange appearing and disappearing radiation, are part of the overall ooooOOOOOoooo mystery or just handwavy type bad writing. As long as they don't go all Lost on us though I'm cool.

ledge, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

cosign on that Human Planet series, incredible images. Reminds me of Baraka.

Yossarian's sense of humour (NotEnough), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 10:15 (fourteen years ago)

I love him, and now I am sad that I missed this entire series, and will now spend the rest of the day watching on iPlayer. Thanks, this thread.

Just caught up with The Killing. I'm part way in love with Lund's white jumper. She is so great, even while she inadvertently gets and innocent man beaten up.

History of Ancient Britain is worth a watch as well, if you can avoid shouting 'GET A HAIRCUT!' at the screen every couple of minutes.

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

:-)

OTM Chap, and I don't have haircut complaints (prob because I'm sporting the same do somewhat?). I had to get used to his Scottish accent more, or rather his delivery. The first episode of History of Ancient Britain he delivered every sentence as if he was having an orgasm, but that took a turn for the better, and I enjoy learning so many things about Albion I didn't know. Plus, in his defence, he is genuinly passionate about it all.

Tracer, please watch all the other episodes if you can, it's so worth it!

La descente infernale (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just kidding really, I've had hair that length before. When I was 18. But yeah, his passion is really infectious.

Ha, Koogs, i geddit! Had an enormous 'The Killing' splurge over the last couple of weeks. Wasn't all that into it at first, but it has got good. Shoulda had it's own thread maybe?

Madchen, Monday, 14 March 2011 12:34 (fourteen years ago)

by the way, when i cued up the last episode of The Promise last night on 4oD it was preceded by an incredibly loud, incredibly violent commercial for "bulletstorm", a first-person shooting game for the playstation. way to go, Channel 4. there was probably a piece of metadata on The Promise the said "war" or something, so an algorithm was like "ok, this matches"

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 14 March 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

Not telling, narc.

Do you have any intel on how comprehensive international iPlayer is going to be?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 16 March 2011 12:29 (fourteen years ago)

none whatsoever. I imagine it all depends on what deals get negotiated with STB peeps and cable companies.

obv it wasn't gonna set the world alight but i wouldn't have minded it trundling on somewhere. bbc one primetime an ambitious timeslot though.

ledge, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't see any of Outcasts, but was it like Defying Gravity? That was neat and the BBC hid that away in the post-post-Newsnight slot as well.

James Mitchell, Monday, 21 March 2011 08:48 (fourteen years ago)

I thought Outcasts was terrible. I watched all of the first two episodes and I tried really hard to like it because, you know, expensive primetime sci-fi is good. But it was terrible. Sadly the wrong lesson will be learned from this.

Was not as good as defying gravity but watchable nonetheless. It was a bit slow moving, somewhat mawkish and cliched but was building some good tension.

re outcasts on wikipedia:
"...Deep down, Carpathia was pure Morecambe." (An allusion to comedic double-act Morcambe and Wise.)

er, no.

istr the guardian becoming fond of it around the same time it got shunted to a later slot on sunday night. i watched it all but it did seem like a bbc version of the duller bits of galactica.

the australians has a version of twenty twelve called 'the games' before the sydney games. i wonder if it was any better...

OK, dammit, Ed and James Mitchell's comments above got me to seek out 'Defying Gravity', which I'm hooked on, even though I know it never gets an ending. Which sucks, because it's really good! If only Outcasts had been even half as good as this.

Before watching this I had no idea that one could obtain a drive-through takeaway of sheep's head. Having seen the main character tucking in to it, I wish I'd remained ignorant tbh.

the analysis/narrative is most politely described as "entry level" and some of the talking heads might be kindly referred to as "a bit bollocks" but the archive footage is a treat if you like seeing Raymond Williams smoking his pipe or listening to F.R.
