Drew Barrymore: classic or dud?

Come on, admit it, you fancy her. You want to cuddle her. You want to have her babies. Me? I'd rather eat my own vomit. Still ordered her biography. I want to found out what she did with Billy Idol.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FIND FIND FIND.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's allright, sort of between classic and dud. But that asymmetrical thing she does with her mouth is quite irritating. So babies: no. Cuddle: sure :)

Omar, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love people who do asymmetrical things with their mouths! That's my thing.

But generally, I'd prefer Christina Ricci.

Nick, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somebody once proposed an immutable law of celebrity-fancying, which was that all men who don't usually fancy celebrities fancy Christina Ricci. I dont know what Nick thinks of celebrities, but I fancy Christina Ricci. Mind you I also fancy Drew Barrymore.

Tom, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always get confused between Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci and Courtney Walsh.

Tom, I've told you all before who my celebrity crushes are. I assumed you were taking in everything I ever said.

Nick, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't know answer re D.Barrymore, Nathalie, but B.Idol did tell a grate FISTING story in R.Stone at time of release of Cyberpunk (is that right title?): well, not story exactly, just that one time he was fisting some willing rock chiXoR, and afterwards his hand SWELLED UP TO ENORMOUS THROBBING SIZE. Erm, I am telling this story why? Is it helping me write my book? Is it gaining me frendz and influence? I am siXoR.

mark s, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Far as [oft. disappointing] celeb Playboy shoots go, Drew's wuz v. good: "fun" photos & not shy w/ the bush. Not that I — ahem — did anything to cause Tom-style "water damage" to the pics; have never found Drew's alleged "cuteness" esp. alluring. And her moovees, few I've seen, erm, s'pose Charlie's Angels was [...striving for compliment...] okayish. Ricci = rowr.

AP, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, I thought she looked a bit dumpy in Charlie's Angels next to Cameron Diaz. Not that I've seen it.

Nick, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick: "I always get confused between Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci and Courtney Walsh."

Is that because you've only viewed them from the "pavilion end"? (Sorry, I'll get me coat...)

AP, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone who starts off with E.T and ends up with Tom Green is surely going wrong somewhere.

Martin, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bet she became infatuated with Tompy after she saw him on telly sucking on that cow-nipple.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drew Barrymore has a stupid face. And has the same surname as Michael Barrymore.

DG, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeh, well, i can live with that

gareth, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Greene is annoying and only mildy amusing

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gorgeous.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The pinefox fancies everyone who is famous, so his response should be disregarded.

Nick, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nonsense. I quite fancy you, for a start.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox, you show a woeful ignorance of propositional logic.

Nick, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

overheard in art class around the time when 'charlies angels' premiered:

'yeah they totally fucked up the old show when they made it into a movie...like, drew barrymore, she's not even hot at all, she's fat. they should have put farrah fawcett in it, she was fucking hot'

of course this triggered the already somewhat-latent 'quite fanciable' opinion of ms.barrymore. everyone i know finds her insufferable though, so it's usually not something i mention. honestly though, i find her pleasant enough.

ethan, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, and the fact that pinefox thinks her 'gorgeous' is certainly a plus. i feel so aristocratic fancying the same woman as him.

ethan, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

as an 8 yr old snorting coke on the set of et - classic, as a hanger onto courtney/dave letterman - so fucking dull she is beyond dud.

Geoff, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drew Barrymore is horrible, she should go back to being a crackwhore.

Ally, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She hasn't got any songs written about her (to my knowledge), she has a good singable name...some Blink 182esque band should write about her. I think she was good in Never Been Kissed.

jel, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic: Because she was able to overcome her alcohol and drug abuse problem and is not currently in jail, dead or touring shopping malls.

Dud: Well, let’s admit she has made a few duds, the irritating Wedding Singer being one. But she was good in Never Been Kissed, and her appearance in Scream was FAB.

I think she’s prone to give great performances, but the movies she’s in are always less then stellar script wise.

JC, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S: "one time he was fisting some willing rock chiXoR"

People who fist: you've got to hand it to them. (Plop!)

AP, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My opinions w/r/t NBK and Wedding Singer are the opposite. NBK was navel-gazing feel good crap that sucked the lifeblood from teen fliks. It was a self-help-section of a bookstore all in itself. Wedding Singer, on the other hand, had adam motherfucking sandler, and not in the bad-annoying or even funny-annoying sort of way, but in a truly sweet goofy persona that was nearly made for him. Or actually, probably WAS made (i.e. written) for him.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I kind of agree with that. Wedding Singer had more things going for it than the OK NBK did.

the pinefox, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Drew Barrymore has done a remarkable job of creating and shaping a career for herself. Not a great actress she is an excellent star - and the very hands on production of Charlies Angels showed she knows exactly what the kids want. It was Drew that said NO GUNS - which made the whole thing much more exciting and cartoony.

I also thought Ever After was a fantastic femenist redux of Cinderella. Unlike - say - Jerry Lewis's Cinderfella (I give Eddie Murphy two years on that one). But do I see Barrymore as Barberella? Hmmm.

Pete, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pinefox admitting that NKB was "OK" disrupts my worldview in a profound and serious manner.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

!= 'admitting'. Use other verbs please! Stating! Opining! Opinefoxing!

the pinefox, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Christina Ricci has long been my biggest celebrity crush, and I can never think of many others who I like. So perhaps Tom's theory is correct. Drew is pretty cute though. Better than Diaz, anyway. Not sure about her films, but we can't have everything now.

Ally C, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1."Opinefoxing"- this week's version of something else we say a lot. 2. Also, my "profound and serious" was something of a tautology, no? Just "profound" would've done the job. 3. Reading the Anniversary thread- I find it mind-boggling that you are completely unfamiliar with the "sitting in a tree" taunt. (Unless this was subtle self-jest).

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know you waz aving a laff, like. So woz I. Now -

>>> you are completely unfamiliar with the "sitting in a tree" taunt. (Unless this was subtle self-jest).

No, no jest. Yes, completely unfamiliar. It means - ??

the pinefox, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It means you are a strange man.

Ally C, Wednesday, 22 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seven years pass...

Directed by Drew Barrymore ?!?

http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/whipit/

velko, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 06:50 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen trailers that give away the whole plot before, but I don't know if I've seen one before this that actually showed climactic moments like when the quiet parent finally tells the overbearing parent to step down.

da croupier, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

Also, post-drug Drew Barrymore is a total dud. An Alicia Silverstone that made better career choices but never scored a Clueless.

da croupier, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:04 (sixteen years ago)

A+ tweethan posts upthread

velko, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:19 (sixteen years ago)

Swine, i never gave 2 fux if it's out of line to call you rather pleasant enough

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:23 (sixteen years ago)

OMG I was wondering if at one point I had liked her. Then I noticed I started the thread and hated her then as much as I do now. So uh yeah I am avoiding her film as the plague.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:27 (sixteen years ago)

I do have to admit I lurve Wedding Singer. Shoot me! I like myself a bit of Adam S from time to time. Like this and that PDL film. Then I have enough for another three decades.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:29 (sixteen years ago)

Even if I normally hate this kind of biopic performance, I thought she was ok as the Beale daughter in HBO's Grey Garden.

J4mi3 H4rl3y (Snowballing), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 07:30 (sixteen years ago)

^ Yeah, same and I generally don't think she can act at all. I do feel like she'd be really nice and pretty fun to hang out with though.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:28 (sixteen years ago)

Have any of you guys seen My Date With Drew, where a dorky guy basically stalks her for the purposes of making a documentary? She seems like a really good sport at the end of that when the guy gets to meet her and go out on a date with her, rather than just getting a restraining order like most folk would do.

ailsa, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

I have and maybe that's why I feel like I do about her. She just seems pretty down to Earth and genuine.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

i love that you capitalized Earth

i just find her gorgeous

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

and i'm probably making it up but i feel like she's a gay rights activist

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know why I did that. I also stared at it wondering if it was spelled right because I'm having one of those moments where even though I know it is, everything about the word looks wrong to me right now.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:35 (sixteen years ago)

She's cutesie like My Little Pony. And you know (or don't know) how much I hate MLP. Fuck off with the cutesiness, you're an adult. Fuck off. hah

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

u know i love that My Little Pony

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:49 (sixteen years ago)

you can take my little pony, sit on it together with drew and PISS OFF. hahaha j/k

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:55 (sixteen years ago)

lol you know, you have been in a funny mood, i feel.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

that's so true. you are very perceptive. :-D

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

i love her, but i feel a little betrayed that she co-produced that he's not that into you nonsense. and was in it, etc.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

Yes. I refuse to see that. A friend of mine caught the end recently and wound up throwing stuff at the TV. lol.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

Basically all you really need to know about Drew Barrymore can be gleaned by watching the movie "Ever After"; if you don't want to strangle her by the end of it, you love her.

(btw I love her)

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

: )

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

lol I haven't seen that either. I haven't really seen that many of her movies at all tbh but I still think I really like her for some reason.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

It's basically Drew's inner psyche on display; she's playing Cinderella, but her Cinderella is FEISTY and FULL OF SPUNK and DESTINED TO BE A PRETTY PRINCESS. The entire thing is totally smackable, but it's also really sweet and charming (IOW it's Drew to a T).

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

She reminds me of cutesy Japanese girls. I hate'em too.

And she married TOM GREEN. HELLO!

Okay, I think I made my point.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah well her terrible taste in men is well-documented (this, behind my happy marriage, is the #2 reason why we will never make sweet love ;_;)

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

never had much of a prob with her - but haven't really ever sat through anything thing she did except for ET (obv awes) & Wedding Singer (obv not), either. but I did hear her on Fresh Air a few days ago and she sounded like a umm real chore. still pretty cuet though.
