I don't think the Werner Herzog character is the ogre everybody says he is. The scene where he tells Ewan Bremner that his poem sucks and quotes the Clint Eastwood dialogue at him, I thought was rather touching - it seemed to me he was taking Julien's 'poem' seriously enough as an attempt at a poem to criticise it on aesthetic grounds rather than just 'humouring' him, like he actually believed the kid would come up with something good eventually even if he was mad. And as for all the other scenes of 'cruelty', how do we know they were actually happening? The 'wrestling' scene was good too - most of the reviews I've seen cite it as 'evidence of the dysfunctional family pressures etc', but I thought it just showed people who couldn't possibly understand each other, much less communicate, but (crucially) at least making an attempt - ie, I thought the family were really trying to help get through to him, and vice versa. (One thing I notice about Korine's films is the physicality in them, ppl are always getting into fights unpredictably, it adds an edge of uneasiness - I wonder if this is because Korine's pretty uneasy about the some perceived threat of mindless violence lurking under everything himself? It would make sense if this 'Fight Harm' thing was a 'Will'-like attempt to face down a fear of being randomly beaten up, and I would love to see that flick somebody, if he ever gets out of the nuthatch)

See, I know somebody who's chronically schizophrenic and institutionalised, and the guy's parents are close family friends and they're completely devastated and confused, wondering if they're to blame etc., and I was thinking of recommending this movie to them as I found it oddly uplifting but then I had second thoughts as I have no idea how a family in their situation would react to this thing, any thoughts?

i might see this film again sometime, i can't remember it enough to comment on yr above thoughts. the one thing i had always wanted to discuss with someone is how the movie seems to blatantly break at least one of the vows, namely music. maybe others, i can't remember. i know, it's just stoopid dogme rools but it still interested me.

dave i would suggest you qualify the recommendation pretty heavily if you make it. i thought JDB had a kind of joyful tint too but everyone else i know seemed to find it very bleak. you're right about the Herzog character - there's something more going on there than simple villainy, with definite flashes of an erratic peculiar kindness - but given that your friend's parents may still be holding themselves responsible they may not catch any such subtleties. since the film is pretty ruthless in its refusal to prescribe or to point fingers as to cause, the film (and Herzog's performance in particular) might only further compound their doubts. all a question of sensibilities though i guess. i'd just give them a good idea of what they might be in for first. either way be sure to steer them well clear of A Beautiful Mind - it is covered with poisonous goo.

the nuthatch thing - is HK in treatment or something?
