Bayleaf, ewww. I like the bright colors (hi dere Tangerine!!) but for looking at every day, pistachio wins.

i will paint my kitchen to fit if need be since this thing will be dominating the whole room anyway

(idk cornflower blue w/white wainscotting at the moment, for the curious)

My is black and chrome, although it is great it is not as great as my british faded to yellowed plastic colour Kenwood Chef that I inherited from my grandmother.

Mine is some kind of hunter green color. I love it and use it for big-batch cookies. Honestly, I use my 9 speed KitchenAid hand mixer (boring white) much more often, though. So get one of those on your registry, too.

I will have to think hard about these colors before voting.

id go with a rougher finish all prices being equal. and won't you have it in a cupboard 95% of the time anyway? unless you make delicious pastry breakfasts every morning in which case kudos, go with buttercup

they had some w/stainless bowls and others with glass bowls as well - any thoughts on that, people that unlike me actually know anything about cooking?

I would get the imperial gray one, it has a nice industrial look to it and is a neutral color. The colored ones are neat but since those mixers last a long time they might end up looking out of place if you change the colors in your kitchen.

Stainless, less breakable.

I have a black one - nothing in my kitchen(s) is color co-ordinated at all (toaster is bright red, cabinets are yellow, lino is mottly brown, fridge is white, etc). Taste the rainbow. Mine doesn't fit on the countertop, so it lives under the Ikea butcherblock thing and gets wrassled out pretty much every weekend.

oh yes they are fucking heavy. i'd rather schlep then have it take up (v. limited) counter space though. depends on the kitchen of coure

They are heavy and big and they don't fit in cupboards unless you live in a giant house. But still nice to have. I would go with the stainless bowl bc it's not breakable. (otoh, that damn thing is another thing A. won't let me put in the dishwasher... thankfully it is easy to hand wash UNLIKE THOSE GD REVEREWARE COPPER BOTTOM NIGHTMARES!!!)

Get a bread recipe book to go with it as the dough hook makes fresh bread a doddle.

like i can't imagine this thing on the counter, i'd rather keep it in the basement, and before that i'd rather stir by hand since i never make bread or dough anyway... why i'm on this thread i am not sure

It's surprising to me that all the mixer colors are such a thing considering how afraid people are of using color in the kitchen. I guess it's because it doesn't impact the all-important RESALE VALUE of a house.

After I wrote that it occurred to me it sounded kind of demented out of context. Or maybe even in context. xp

White. You can pay up to $85 more for other colors of plastic fascia.

Its a fucking power tool for the kitchen - this is your workshop. I live with gaudy orange powertools and bland white kitchen appliances and neither has changed me much at all. I happen to like white (it doesn't require UV unstable pigments) in most things, but if the only food processors were Prince Nelson purple I'd still buy them.

It's not plastic! It's enameled cast iron, unless I'm entirely misunderstanding what you mean.

Also no lie, my dad bought my mom's KitchenAid mixer like 20 years ago and she hates the color and she's dying for it to wear out already but the bastard will not let go.

The housing on mine is enamel over steel. Stainless though won't chip but can look like crap if you don't polish it with Windex or something, shows fingerprints like crazy and any little oil fleck.

Honestly, I think Gloss Cinnamon is quite lovely, and Pistachio wins for vintage charm. We have an unused near-Pistachio baking mixer that screams 1966 to me.

From a pragmatic standpoint, the colors most likely to match other counter appliances over the next few decades are white and black.

My dad? Never. The list of presents that were almost but not quite exactly what she wanted that she has just lived with over the years is a very long one, my friend.

It should match the color of the things you will mix most.

Which reminds me, the pour shield is a not-inconsequential addition, I think. I mean you can also drape a dishtowel over the mixer while you're adding dusty items like oh FLOUR but I think the pouring thing would be cool if you have kitchen storage like whoah anyway.

The pouring thing is great, also the dough hook is the best for chocolate chip cookie dough in addition to bread dough. I have the meat grinder attachment too, which is completely necessary if you make your own sausage or uh cat food.

I always wanted the meat grinder attachment. Can you also use it for apple sauce??

There might be a food strainer cone that would go on the front of the grinder for applesauce, but just the grinder won't do it. I got a manual Roma sauce maker/strainer for apple/tomato sauce instead.

I have the food strainer and the meat grinder and they are distinct objects. I get 10x more use out of the bowl, beater and dough hook than anything else.

Meat grinder attachment looks amazing, apparently you can make your own sausages with it even, which would be AWESOME.

Oh nev mind, a manual food strainer/scraper works fine anyway. Plus you get all the fun of clamping it to your counter edge and making yr kitchen into a workshop.

have the meat/fat semi-frozen and double-grind on coarse. Watch the motor temp so you don't burn it up; just give it a rest to cool back down if the top gets hot to the touch.

Sara R-C, you definitely want to get the right one for whichever you have! The tilthead one is too wide to fit in the bowl lift bowl, even though I think the bowl lift has a 6 qt and the tilthead a 5 qt.

jjusten's link at the head of this thread is for a tilthead model btw. So, sir, if you get one of these in any color, I will send you this optional bowl-scraping beater. It is a frosted clear and will harmonize gracefully with any hue you choose.

My stand mixer (Hamilton Beach) has been super sturdy for 15+ years now, but it's starting to wheeze a bit when I demand another batch of bread dough out of it. May be time for a Kitchenaid.

my shortlist going into this was persimmon or ice, candy apple w/ a glass bowl (but as this thread has helped me realize that is a no) in second place and cobalt being in the running as well.

I had a cheap but dependable Sunbeam mixer that just burned out after 20 years of service. Trying to decide whether to go Kitchenaid or a cheaper brand.
