tangerine ftw

well what color is your kitchen?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

You're missing the cotton-candy pink one that gives part of the purchase price to breast cancer research.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

I am liking bayleaf

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

cheapest >>>>>>>> imperial black > pistachio

i guess you are the fattest and the ugliest (Matt P), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

well i have 'pear' and i love it

it's very 70's looking

homosexual II, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

Bayleaf, ewww. I like the bright colors (hi dere Tangerine!!) but for looking at every day, pistachio wins.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

i will paint my kitchen to fit if need be since this thing will be dominating the whole room anyway

(idk cornflower blue w/white wainscotting at the moment, for the curious)

xposts

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

My is black and chrome, although it is great it is not as great as my british faded to yellowed plastic colour Kenwood Chef that I inherited from my grandmother.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

Mine is some kind of hunter green color. I love it and use it for big-batch cookies. Honestly, I use my 9 speed KitchenAid hand mixer (boring white) much more often, though. So get one of those on your registry, too.

I will have to think hard about these colors before voting.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

my ex-roomie had a tangerine one, it was classier looking than you'd expect

dan m, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

id go with a rougher finish all prices being equal. and won't you have it in a cupboard 95% of the time anyway? unless you make delicious pastry breakfasts every morning in which case kudos, go with buttercup

i guess you are the fattest and the ugliest (Matt P), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

Mine lives on the countertop, too heavy to be schlepping it in and out of cupboards.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

In the cupboard? My dear, no. This takes pride of place on the counter top.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i lifted one and that fucker is heavy, no way its going up in a cupboard

they had some w/stainless bowls and others with glass bowls as well - any thoughts on that, people that unlike me actually know anything about cooking?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

I would get the imperial gray one, it has a nice industrial look to it and is a neutral color. The colored ones are neat but since those mixers last a long time they might end up looking out of place if you change the colors in your kitchen.

not the sort of person who would wind up in a landfill (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

Stainless, less breakable.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

I have a black one - nothing in my kitchen(s) is color co-ordinated at all (toaster is bright red, cabinets are yellow, lino is mottly brown, fridge is white, etc). Taste the rainbow. Mine doesn't fit on the countertop, so it lives under the Ikea butcherblock thing and gets wrassled out pretty much every weekend.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

oh yes they are fucking heavy. i'd rather schlep then have it take up (v. limited) counter space though. depends on the kitchen of coure

i guess you are the fattest and the ugliest (Matt P), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

They are heavy and big and they don't fit in cupboards unless you live in a giant house. But still nice to have. I would go with the stainless bowl bc it's not breakable. (otoh, that damn thing is another thing A. won't let me put in the dishwasher... thankfully it is easy to hand wash UNLIKE THOSE GD REVEREWARE COPPER BOTTOM NIGHTMARES!!!)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

ok yeah knowing me breakability is a key issue so thx for the tip guys

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

Get a bread recipe book to go with it as the dough hook makes fresh bread a doddle.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

I love the dough hook.

not the sort of person who would wind up in a landfill (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

like i can't imagine this thing on the counter, i'd rather keep it in the basement, and before that i'd rather stir by hand since i never make bread or dough anyway... why i'm on this thread i am not sure

i guess you are the fattest and the ugliest (Matt P), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

i like the sound of "dough hook" despite having no idea what it is

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

It's surprising to me that all the mixer colors are such a thing considering how afraid people are of using color in the kitchen. I guess it's because it doesn't impact the all-important RESALE VALUE of a house.

I DIED, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

After I wrote that it occurred to me it sounded kind of demented out of context. Or maybe even in context. xp

not the sort of person who would wind up in a landfill (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

White. You can pay up to $85 more for other colors of plastic fascia.

Its a fucking power tool for the kitchen - this is your workshop. I live with gaudy orange powertools and bland white kitchen appliances and neither has changed me much at all. I happen to like white (it doesn't require UV unstable pigments) in most things, but if the only food processors were Prince Nelson purple I'd still buy them.

Pauper Management Improved (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

otm

i guess you are the fattest and the ugliest (Matt P), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

It's not plastic! It's enameled cast iron, unless I'm entirely misunderstanding what you mean.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

Also no lie, my dad bought my mom's KitchenAid mixer like 20 years ago and she hates the color and she's dying for it to wear out already but the bastard will not let go.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

The housing on mine is enamel over steel. Stainless though won't chip but can look like crap if you don't polish it with Windex or something, shows fingerprints like crazy and any little oil fleck.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

they never break

i guess you are the fattest and the ugliest (Matt P), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

xp: Ok, a different color of paint. The white is evidently the one 95% of consumers choose, given the markup for other colors.

Honestly, I think Gloss Cinnamon is quite lovely, and Pistachio wins for vintage charm. We have an unused near-Pistachio baking mixer that screams 1966 to me.

From a pragmatic standpoint, the colors most likely to match other counter appliances over the next few decades are white and black.

responding to last post: Um, why not ask her? Or match it to her breakfast alcove drapery.

Pauper Management Improved (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

My dad? Never. The list of presents that were almost but not quite exactly what she wanted that she has just lived with over the years is a very long one, my friend.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

It should match the color of the things you will mix most.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

It would probably help if your wardrobe did too!

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

Which reminds me, the pour shield is a not-inconsequential addition, I think. I mean you can also drape a dishtowel over the mixer while you're adding dusty items like oh FLOUR but I think the pouring thing would be cool if you have kitchen storage like whoah anyway.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

The pouring thing is great, also the dough hook is the best for chocolate chip cookie dough in addition to bread dough. I have the meat grinder attachment too, which is completely necessary if you make your own sausage or uh cat food.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

I always wanted the meat grinder attachment. Can you also use it for apple sauce??

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

oh man i am totally the type of person for which all this attachment stuff could get me totally down the obsessive rabbit hole

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

There might be a food strainer cone that would go on the front of the grinder for applesauce, but just the grinder won't do it. I got a manual Roma sauce maker/strainer for apple/tomato sauce instead.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

I have the food strainer and the meat grinder and they are distinct objects. I get 10x more use out of the bowl, beater and dough hook than anything else.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

Black for me.

I have to keep mine on the top of the refrigerator bc our kitchen is ridic. small.

Meat grinder attachment looks amazing, apparently you can make your own sausages with it even, which would be AWESOME.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

Oh nev mind, a manual food strainer/scraper works fine anyway. Plus you get all the fun of clamping it to your counter edge and making yr kitchen into a workshop.

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

ps I got one of the aftermarket bowl-scraping beaters EXCEPT I got the wrong one (tilt head one when I have the bowl lift one), so if any tilthead Kitchenaiders need this, hit me up.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

ps I got one of the aftermarket bowl-scraping beaters EXCEPT I got the wrong one (tilt head one when I have the bowl lift one), so if any tilthead Kitchenaiders need this, hit me up.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

I've been meaning to get one of those, Jaq, but I think I also have a bowl lift... didn't realize there was a variety here!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

dudes, I am totally taking my Kitchen Aide around the block several times this weekend.

I will be making the following: Cookies, bread and sausage.

Any hints, holla. Otherwise, I'll post pictures.

Honey!!!! We're eatin' good this weekend!!!!!

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

have the meat/fat semi-frozen and double-grind on coarse. Watch the motor temp so you don't burn it up; just give it a rest to cool back down if the top gets hot to the touch.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

I'm a tangerine gal. Goes nice in a primarily white kitchen.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

Sara R-C, you definitely want to get the right one for whichever you have! The tilthead one is too wide to fit in the bowl lift bowl, even though I think the bowl lift has a 6 qt and the tilthead a 5 qt.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

This is very useful info, THX!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

jjusten's link at the head of this thread is for a tilthead model btw. So, sir, if you get one of these in any color, I will send you this optional bowl-scraping beater. It is a frosted clear and will harmonize gracefully with any hue you choose.

Jaq, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

pistachio

beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

tangerine ffs!

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, and White. For flexibility of coordination.

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

Nothing cheers me up like orange stuff in a kitchen, incl. oranges.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

Pistachio, mostly because of the paint scheme in my kitchen. Black might work too.

Le mépris vient de la tête, la haine vient du cœur (Michael White), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

Tangerine, definitely.

emil.y, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

My stand mixer (Hamilton Beach) has been super sturdy for 15+ years now, but it's starting to wheeze a bit when I demand another batch of bread dough out of it. May be time for a Kitchenaid.

earnest goes to camp, ironic goes to ilm (pixel farmer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

In tangerine!

earnest goes to camp, ironic goes to ilm (pixel farmer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

my shortlist going into this was persimmon or ice, candy apple w/ a glass bowl (but as this thread has helped me realize that is a no) in second place and cobalt being in the running as well.

now i have much to think about - part of the problem is that they def look different in person, green apple was kinda a disappointment tbh

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

A. probably won't come all the way to ILX to vote, but he says "cobalt blue" immediately when asked about this. (I think he's fine with our green one, though.)

Sara R-C, Thursday, 27 January 2011 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

Is the imperial gray matte? Ooh.

Obelisk Strategies (doo dah), Thursday, 27 January 2011 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

Honestly looking back I kinda wish I had gone with one of the pastel colors, because they just look so classic.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 27 January 2011 01:25 (fourteen years ago)

That's what makes imperial gray cool, I love the matte surface. xp

Peyton Flanders (Nicole), Thursday, 27 January 2011 01:50 (fourteen years ago)

guess what our first wedding gift was!

color will not be revealed until end of poll.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 5 February 2011 07:46 (fourteen years ago)

(oh also jaq email me so i can buy yer fancy stuff that goes with my new mixer that i do not understand)

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 5 February 2011 07:52 (fourteen years ago)

Voted silver metallic as it's the color of the one I have here

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Saturday, 5 February 2011 09:38 (fourteen years ago)

voted Imperial Red because my blender's in that color because my car's in that color (except there it's called Alfa Rosso)

StanM, Saturday, 5 February 2011 10:24 (fourteen years ago)

jj, I have emailed the gmail address in your ilx profile. Get baking!

Jaq, Saturday, 5 February 2011 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

dammit, the "what is the color" tension is killing me now

Sara R-C, Saturday, 5 February 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 14 February 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

My wife wanted Imperial Red and, had I know about color choices, I would have gone for Onyx*, so naturally we ended up with a white one.

* SLAM!

Just ordered a cobalt. Not cheap huh. $300.

paulhw, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

I had a cheap but dependable Sunbeam mixer that just burned out after 20 years of service. Trying to decide whether to go Kitchenaid or a cheaper brand.

WmC, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

I have Empire Red. It was a gift, though, so I wasn't in a position to decide on color.
