I'm already using Ally for my savings, but am thinking of switching over my checking account too from TD to Ally after learning that A) they refund ALL ATM fees B) deposits from ATMs show up instantly (which I never do, so I don't know if most places do this?). This seems like it would completely eliminate the need for a brick-and-mortar establishment, with the exception of getting a replacement for a lost debit card, which seems to happen to me a few times a year, which my bank will issue to me on the spot.
Are there any downfalls or drawbacks that I'm not considering? Seriously, is there any reason not to have Ally do everything for me?

TD refunds all ATM fees too i thought?

Well they don't charge their own, but they won't refund the ones that other banks charge.

How do deposits from ATMs show up instantly? They don't have ATMs. I thought you had to mail in your deposits.

Because iirc you should be able to make deposits to any account from any bank at any ATM that takes deposits

I've thought about this though. Fact is, I've never had to deposit cash, but I also don't use direct deposit. The one thing I'd worry about is sending in checks for deposit and having them get lost in the mail. It's bad enough when I make a deposit at Chase that it's not immediately available, hard to imagine dropping some paychecks or other income into the mail and not checking my account every hour for a week until it shows up!

Yo, FUCK TD bank and their new $2 ATM fees. Totally switching to Ally in the next week. Also sort of considering ING, but they don't do paper checks (which are helpful in a pinch) and don't have ATMs that are as free as Ally.

I JUST SIGNED UP FOR ALLY CHECKING AND I AM SO EXCITED. I tried to do this a few months ago but was denied bcz of a recent overdraft caused by an automatic payment, so I halfheartedly reapplied this morning expecting to go through like days of calls and checks and waits and stuff, but no, I was approved instantly, and now I have Ally checking!
AND apparently they're rolling out an incredible eCheck deposit system. So stoked!

PNC also refunds ATM fees, but I think are more regionally limited in terms of who can get accounts. They just started allowing you to photograph cheques with one's iPhone to deposit them.

guuuhhh now I feel like I should've gotten PNC... that iPhone thing sounds amazing and I was just thinking a few hours ago how cool it would be if I could do that. Though Ally is giving me 1% interest on savings and 0.5% on checking, and has overdraft transfer protection. Maybe they'll come out with some iPhone thing soon? Or maybe I should just open two accounts?

That is better interest than PNC on both scores. PNC also have actual branches with reasonably competent people staffing them (a revelation after some of my UK banking experiences)

I love Ally so much except you still cannot deposit cash. Does anyone else have this problem of having to deposit cash into an Ally account? Should I just get a free checking acct from PNC and xfer money every week (new job, pays in cash, etc)? Does anyone w/ banking knowledge know why Ally accts can't accept cash deposits from ATMs?
