Is there any way to know if this is in a person's voice's future?
― Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)
is your voice wavering?
― hipsterPad (Schlafsack), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)
btw this is a feature I want built into that Marlon Brando machine to detect what a spunky young person will look/sound like 30 years on.

I've noticed that Men seem to get deeper and rougher voices or more enunciated speech as they age.

The third google result for elderly wavering voice is a Google Book scan of the Spider-man movie's novelization!

Some old people get shaky hands. I'd guess the same muscle degeneration that causes shaky hands also causes wavering voice, if the muscles it affects are throat ones instead of hand ones.
I can't answer "why do some old people get shaky hands?" though.

some people (incl katherine hepburn) have "essential tremor" (used to be known as palsy, is not a sign of parkinson's) which causes their heads or hands to shake, sometimes uncontrollably. my dad had a tremor in his hands since he was in high school and was super self conscious about it, then finally when he was like 60-something he saw a neurologist who recognized it as essential tremor. now he is on anti seizure meds and doesn't have the tremor anymore.
not sure if this is what you're talking about, but it's probably why hepburn's voice was shaky?

Abs, this happens when the muscles that control the opening/closing of the vocal fold gets weak and atrophies with age. You can actually get surgery to correct this: http://www.enttoday.org/details/article/684947/The_Voice_Lift_Should_vocal_fold_surgery__be_considered_a_cosmetic_procedure.html
