Bobby's thing about "you won't even hear it" a few episodes prior then a another flashback to it in the penultimate episode made me sorta lean towards Tony dying. Also sudden, abrupt cut to a black screen mid-action kinda says Death.

there was some interview with chase going off on how vindictive american audiences were for wanting tony to pay for his sins, so he's basically rejecting the interpretation that tony dies, but really tony's way more dead here than avon at the end of blake's 7 (which has a very similar cut-to-credits ending)

wasn't necessarily a "cut to credits" fwiw. the audience is sitting there looking at a silent, black screen for 10 seconds.

no doubt in my mind tony does not die, the whole thrust of the show is that these people are completely stuck in their awful lives - it mocks you for finding vicarious thrills therein while simultaneously stringing you along - final scene is a comment on just that like OMG WHAT IS GOING ON a: nothing

But whether the bullet was a wave or particle when it reached him is what's up for debate.

I remember thinking that my dvr had messed up the recording of the episode. My dvr does glitch on me every once in a while. I've always wondered if Chase meant the ending to be, at least in part, a jokey mindfuck on us timeshifters out there.

The song played during the final scene is "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey; the scene cuts to black near the end of the song, precisely on the phrase "Don't stop". The band's lead singer, Steve Perry, refused to let Chase use "Don't Stop Believin'" in the final scene until he knew the fate of the leading characters, and did not give final approval until three days before the episode aired. He feared that the song would be remembered as the soundtrack to Tony's demise, until Chase assured that it would not be the case.[16]

erm if someone ain't heard by now how the sopranos ended, i dunno what rock they're living under given how many years it's been, and how big of a show it was.

I've never seen the episode and I knew about it days later. hell Family Guy did a fucking joke about it.

The cat in question when appearing in solid form is sleeping. As a spirit though it is awake, eyes wide open. But it is dead. LBI clearly believes the cat is gone. Chase knows this too but they both want you to reflect on the cat. The cat continues to live in your memory and ends up being immortal. But it is dead.

I can't think of a better ending of a series. I avoided any talk about it because I rent HBO shows on DVD--I only knew it went black-screen because of the Simpsons parody. But it's truly great, even more of an accomplishment considering how many other shows go spectacularly haywire in the finale--Lost, Six Feet Under, The L Word (though I guess haywire is relative there).

I love the vivid drear of the closing seasons--not boring at all--and really only wish Meadow's rationalizing accommodation with gangsterism had gotten a closer look. I couldn't disagree more with the idea that the ending is about how nothing will change and they have awful lives. They have something good together, in a deal with the devil, and now the deal's up.

actualizing steve perry's worst fears is reason enough to remember the ending as tony's demise.

finally got around to finishing Season 6 Part 2 (had started watching it back in 2011 and some assclown sent me two disc 2s in my Amazon order and I lost track again). masterful end to the series, but I feel like my answer to the original thread question is being unfairly influenced by James being dead and me not wanting to lose him twice.

I did a series rewatch earlier this year and man it really felt to me like he dies
