Bristol

I'm moving to Bristol in September, probably just for nine months. So tell me about it. I've heard it's a nice place to live, but like most of Britain's cities, there are good bits to live in and bad bits. As you can maybe guess from the nine months part of the first sentence, I would ideally like to be in easy reach of the university, but living cheaply. What's there to do in Bristol? What not to do? Any good places to look for flat-share / room renting info would also be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED oh lovely ILE people.

M. Skidmore to thread! (He lived in Bristol for YEARS...)

The only time I've ever beaten up it was while I was visiting friends in Bristol (when we got back home, one of said friends put on 'Getting Beaten Up' by the Piranhas, cheers.) But then the best speed I've ever had I scored in Bristol, so...

The area round the Arnolfini arts centre is v. nice in a poncey arthouse sort of way...

I was born in Bristol and only moved out of the area to go to Cambridge in my first thirty years (and now I'm in London = I must get to know Toby better!). It's a little quiet, but it's an attractive city. I haven't lived there for 13 years so don't know what is cheap nowadays, nor what to do there, so I'm afraid I can't provide any real help. My only old friend from that territory now lives in Bath, so I can't get useful advice from him either. Sorry!

Its trying to continue to re-juventate itself at the moment. Nice place to be. As mentionned the Watershed and Arnolfini (galleries/bars) are cultural hotspots by the docks. Saturday afternoons the place is usually full of skateboarders. And theres even a coulpa' Mc Donalds's, shopping centres and Spar's. Theres a special bristol housefinder/ student website' like thing, but cant think of it right now. Its here somewhere....
