which is best? I like the esotericity of Shia, and the hardcoreness of its followers.

Ain't it funny, the difference a decade makes? Ten years ago, the Shiites were considered the extremists -- because of the Ayatollah and Lebanon -- and the Sunnis were considered the reasonable Muslims. Now, the perception has flip-flopped -- Osama and obnoxious Saudi behavior has made the Sunnis seem extreme, while the Iranians have cooled down the extent that they might well be the closest thing to a rational Middle East government.

Don't know much about either branch of Islam, other than the foregoing.

When I was younger, I thought that "Shiite" and "shitty" were pronounced the same way.

There is a village in the Lebanon where Irish troops were based called Bra'ashit.

snigger.

a funny thing I have just thought - you know the way Shia has that whole thing about the Hidden Imam (some Shia leader from centuries ago who is hiding somewhere and will one day reveal himself and do stuff)? Well, with all those tantalising sightings of a still living Osama Bin Laden, it's like OBL is becoming Sunni's own Hidden Imam.

I'll pick what ever side has the coolest mystic sect.
