god i love that black swan line

k so I've seen Center Stage more times than is healthy, and maybe it shouldn't be surprising that ballet films share the same tropes but honestly, I couldn't get that film out of my head the entire time i was watching Black Swan.

not just cause of the plot similarities but because some of the opening sequences were practically shot-for-shot remakes.

Roz, Monday, 7 February 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

i think i actually said "BITCH" out loud in the theater when she said that line

surm have you seen center stage? you should - it's not as melodramatic or over the top as Black Swan, but it's equally hilarious.

Roz, Monday, 7 February 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah i totally have :) it was one of my friends favs in college. love it.

it's one of those films that's so bad yet so unintentionally funny that you can't help watching it over and over whenever it's on. Also, GREAT dance sequences.

but back to black swan - the two nearly identical scenes came near beginning where a ballerina, with perfectly bunned-up hair is shown walking out of the subway and heading towards the American Ballet Theatre, and the second is where they show ballet shoes being broken into - the tearing and stripping of the heels, the stitching and stretching. When I saw that I was all "lol center stage".

and then it went on... the introduction of the sadistic control freak company director, the arrival of the new rebel girl who comes in late and swears a lot but is a totally awesome dancer, bulimia (duh), overbearing ballet mothers living vicariously through their daughters, the lead character cast in the coveted role after accidentally seducing her co. director/choreographer, the rebel girl taking the wholesome lead character out for a wild night at a club...

it's pretty much center stage if center stage was told from the uptight prima ballerina's point of view instead of the wholesome blonde's. plus psychodrama.

hey remember when Black Swan was underwriting on NPR and you kept hearing Michele Norris or whoever describe it as a "psychosexual thriller" and it was hilarious

not relevant to the poll but uh

i've seen center stage multiple times, including once in the theater

i couldnt tell you why

Princess TamTam, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

the company kind of the elephant in the room here i think

Princess TamTam, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

Michele Norris seems like she would be kind of freaky.

Peyton Flanders (Nicole), Monday, 7 February 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

remember thinking it was funny there was only one gay guy in center stage

Princess TamTam, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

xpost i haven't seen the company though I've been planning to for ages. any good?

Roz, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

I have never seen Center Stage, and I keep hearing how good it is. I wonder if it is on Netflix.

Peyton Flanders (Nicole), Monday, 7 February 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

no doubt

we dont get to know any of the male dancers! in center stage they're all straight love interests

Princess TamTam, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

Love the gay dancer. "I'm Erik Jones but my stage name is Erik O. Jones, after Oprah."

sorry i could quote this film all day.

Roz, Monday, 7 February 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

haha was going to post the company is better than both of these

black swan is more 'interesting' & takes things further but centre stage is way more fun/rewatchable
