This is related to one of my favourite things, paintings of celebs on the side of fairground rides where you squint and struggle to work out whether it's Kylie or Dolly Parton, or why Clint Eastwood is wearing an Indiana Jones hat.

I wish this thread's title weren't so condescending.

Yeah, if you compare these to any kind of genuinely good art, they're pretty weak sauce. But good art is rare. These fall into the category of a sincere homage paid to good art, by eager aspirants.

Aimless, Saturday, 12 February 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

uhm it's not condescending it's p much outright contemptuous

sincere homage paid to good art = lol

scott seward, Saturday, 12 February 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

nakhchivan, you obv don't have enough elevation to be condescending, so your contempt is of little consequence.

The Bob Barker painting doesn't have Plinko :(

tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 13 February 2011 02:42 (fifteen years ago)

My high school art teacher was a notably sexist, kinda creepy guy. He only liked representational art, and only of people! So all we did was portrait work, mostly from photos. I realized eventually he responded best (an A no matter how lazy the art) when I drew women with curvy asses. So eventually I just started drawing from '80s Calvin Klein jeans ads. Then I focused only on the butt, just these jean pocket asses truncated at the waist and thighs. A or A+ every time. That is how I spent my senior year drawing asses in charcoal and pencil. <3 Abbott

"if you compare these to any kind of genuinely good art, they're pretty weak sauce"

have to disagree here:

versus
http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/011/d/f/Eminem_Sketch_by_darimc.png

much respect to peyton but her Eminem is too on-the-nose, like something you'd put
in Entertainment Weekly with a caption underneath like "Eminem has struggled to keep his demons in check"

the deviantart sketch is more haunting in its fanzine mugshottiness. it captures the
"banality of thuggery" or some such nonsense much better.

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/028/d/4/audrey_hepburn_by_greta_pfuscher-d387ulg.jpg

^I thought this was v cool and imaginative until I figured out it's a copy of a Breakfast at Tiffany's film still, i.e.:

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc73/KawaiiKun/Photoshop/Annex-HepburnAudreyBreakfastatTiffa.jpg

actually I still like the way the drawing turns a goofy scene into something abstract and inexplicable. like, what are those tufts of hair on the side of her head, and what's that glowing orb, and why are her glasses levitating? it's mysterious but not too too willfully bizarre.

by comparison, this one is uninteresting:

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/016/0/b/audrey_hepburn_by_wlrob-d37d72w.jpg

...although I won't deny the skill behind it. it's harder to scorn these things when you look at them as drawing exercises and look at a deviantart gallery as a notebook of someone's artistic progress. on the other hand, it's a little sad when some people don't progress beyond the level of mimicry, so that their drawing exercises really are the peak of their creativity. but it's cynical to assume that's the case for all or most people on the site.

that said, I don't mind giggling at portraits that are just plain awful, drawing exercises or not. I mean

srsly impressive rly

itv digital manqué (nakhchivan), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, when I tried the same technique (breaking a photo into a grid of squares and copying it square by square) my portrait (of me, not Audrey) was decent but nowhere near as realistic as that one.

uncle twikkelingssteurnissen (unregistered), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

bad Audrey Hepburn drawings are hilarious. it takes a certain amount of genius to transform one of the most conventionally pretty women ever into one of the most conventionally scary monsters ever.

itv digital manqué (nakhchivan), Monday, 14 February 2011 00:00 (fifteen years ago)

realistic audrey portrait is done with projection (if it isn't a complete shop) in other words it's a big ol cheat. (i have a friend who paints from projected photos but at least they're his own photos.)

ledge, Monday, 14 February 2011 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

some of them are great but some are clearly drawings even in the thumbnail

itv digital manqué (nakhchivan), Monday, 14 February 2011 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

correction though, nakh: the second image in my long post is a photograph, and the first and third ones are people's drawings of it. you even had me confused and amazed there for a minute.

uncle twikkelingssteurnissen (unregistered), Monday, 14 February 2011 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

but the difficult w/ photorealist sketching would be in the shading rather than the outlines themselves
