We've done a poll of all of his films, which I missed and didn't vote in. Now we'll narrow it down to the Six Moral Tales, none of which received any votes iirc.

Claire's Knee gets most of the attention, but I prefer Love in the Afternoon.

Only seen #3, and it's absolutely brilliant.

Davek (davek_00), Sunday, 13 February 2011 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

Claire's Knee probably gets the most attention because it has the best title and the video box had a girl's knee and leg on it.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

davek, watch the disc with the first 2 and Love in the Afternoon.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

Have actually borrowed Claire's Knee from my uni library, which I can't wait to watch...the shorts must be on YouTube right?

Davek (davek_00), Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

Dunno! I saw them on VHS aamof.

bamcquern, Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

does claire's knee really get the most attn??? i thought love in the afternoon and my night at maud's were more 'popular', had bigger reps, etc.

balls, Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

voted claire's knee, it...resonates. these are all wonderful.

balls, Sunday, 13 February 2011 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

i've been watching or rewatching a bunch of these lately. suzanne's career is pretty good! recently *rescreened* claire's knee and maud's, think the latter is much better. have yet to see la collectionneuse, and it's been a long time since i saw love in the afternoon but i remember liking it. of the 5 i've seen i will go with #3

La Collectionneuse is my favorite. I love how everyone is lazy and never works.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 19 February 2011 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

"La Collectionneuse" my fave as well.

Maud's is better than Claire's Knee which i thought was a bore and not very deep -- it presents an interesting problem but doesn't do anything with it. but maybe i missed something.

Haven't seen the first two, not sure if I've seen #4 (I saw one of his early and lesser-known films a few years ago, but I can't remember if that was the one). Anyway, pretty close between Maud and Claire, with a nice symmetry between the really interesting females (Maud, Laura) and their porcelain-doll opposites (Françoise, Claire).

Watched La Collectioneuse with 3 or 4 friends and it was uncomfortable because the characters discuss philosophy and I think they're supposed to look ridiculous and priggish while they do so, but it made me think my friends were thinking "this movie is incredibly pretentious."

Also, Rhomer: a prude? puritanical? Excluding Astrea and Celadon.

Maybe Rohmer is a prude? His characters are mostly frustrated, and the sex seems to happen to everyone but the main characters. But it's always because of the main characters trepidation and mis-steps. I'm not sure what the lesson to be learn from the six moral tales, but I feel like he had one in mind.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 19 February 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

lesson to be learned?

JacobSanders, Saturday, 19 February 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

A bunch of French folks philosophizing is a very "In every French movie ever..." Type of thing (or was)- it can often be part of the fun if dialoque is well written - and I hope Bamcquern's friends didn't think it was pretentious. That would be sad.

yeah, it was clear the characters were supposed to be insufferable, especially given the ending. Love in the afternoon was my fav out of the 2 moral tales I actually saw (the other being la collectioneuse, obv.). The characters were more real and I think it was funnier. This could be a bias because la collectioneuse was the first rhomer movie I ever saw and I think I saw 2 or 3 between LC and LITA and maybe became better acquainted with rhomer in the process, making it more enjoyable to me.

Maybe the moral is the disconnect between what we think sex and love are supposed to be what they really are- the consequences of these expectations.

I don't think the films were about learning lessons or getting across a moral. They were more about moral choices or, in the case of Claire's Knee, hiding behind one.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

sometimes, i think that the real moral in Rohmer's six moral tales is to remind everyone that both the word and the concept "douche" are originally French.

i would've voted for my night at maud's, had i know about this poll/seen all of these films when this poll was active.

Watching a pretty bad latter day Columbo right now which has Patrick Bachau, from "La Collectionneuse", as the murderer.
