Dr C to thread!! (OK they were six and eight at the time I think...)

mark s, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

also Frank Kogan to thread!!

mark s, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I have done. She talks more sense than a lot of adult critics. The great thing about kids is that they don't mince their words; viz C. on hearing The Gentle Waves: "What IS this terrible music?"

Archel, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Why not?

But no, I'm not sure I've met many since I was that age myself.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, any 'grown-up' could've told you that Archel!

Andrew L, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably.

jel --, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

True :) But it's the 'kids say the darnedest things' syndrome innit?

Archel, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i tried this once. they opined that pop music was rubbish and wussy and The Little Mermaid was much better as any fule kno.

katie, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I am very bad at talking to children, is why I asked this question. My girlfriend wishes I was better at it. Pop music it strikes me is something both I and hypothetical child know a bit about - unfortunately conversation with children does not work like this. (Also I should get rid of the scary beard).

Tom, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Why bother, I could just come here instead, ahem.

I talked football at the weekend with one of my brothers new nephews, he was a massive gooners fan so it was very easy. football is definitely the 7 year old boy one, I don't know if 7 year old girls are as predictable.

Ronan, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I talked to a 9 year about Aaron Carter, so I don't see why not.

Nicole, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i was talking to my brother (age=16, mental age=7) about 'pop' music last night. Namely the new oasis album. he said he heard a couple of oasis tracks on the radio and that he was thinking of buying it. I threatened to kill him if he did.

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was too scared to talk to Rebecca in case we got along too well.

Graham, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to teach English (sic) to some scarily cynical 8 year old "fillette" back in Madrid. It was the days of glory for the Spicey ones, but despite storing lots of mags and pictures of them she was incredingbly bitchy about them, much more than I could be myself. And that can be difficult, I am aware of it...

Arantxa, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I should get rid of the scary beard

I find it amazing that Tom says this and Nicole, in posting, does not deliver a comment of encouragement (or threat in case he doesn't follow through). Or has Nicole mellowed? Are beards her thing now?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

she grew her own and changed her mind

mark s, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

! Astounding!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

All seven year old girls are in love with Gareth Gates. Official.

**Dr C to thread!! (OK they were six and eight at the time I think...) **

Seven and Nine now, though!

Miss C (7) and I have many talks about pop music, and we usually watch TOTP together. She has started wanting to buy chart singles and sing along with her friends. I'm interested in how and why kids like/dislike stuff - often it's hats/clothes/arsing about on TOTP that provides the hook to grab their attention. But then I'm impressed how much they take in - often noticing little noises in the backing track or liking instrumental breaks etc

At the moment both my kids don't really criticise 'Dad's music' other than 'Uh-oh, not Althea and Donna AGAIN'.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. B2k.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

7 year old girls also like Mis-teeq, Destiny's Child, Will Smith and S Club 7. They know all the dance steps to every S Club 7 song.

They like The Simpsons, Malcolm In The Middle, and Sabrina The Teenage Witch. They probably read the accompanying Sabrina's Secrets magazine so they know all about hair styles, fashion and dealing with a magic cat called Salem.

C J, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Althea and Donna"

???

the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely you bopped along to "Up Town Top Ranking" in your younger days too, P F?

David, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"bopped"

???

Tom, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

D'you think we learn to listen uncarefully? I know I have c.35 years practice at speedreading, viz getting something out of the article/book while only reading about 1/100th of it: is there an equivalent, viz speed-listening?

mark s, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It is known as the Martian Method, Mark.

Tom, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I refer you all to the Poetry Society published book 'The Message', in which Edna Welthorpe, Mrs reads out some Boyzone lyrics to a classroomful of children in the company of a crossword-compiling poet. One of the great scenes in late 20th century non-fiction.

I too have discussed the Spice Girls with children who were supposed to be learning English. It started out as an excuse not to do any work, but I quite enjoyed it really. One of them claimed to prefer Blur.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite often talk to a 7 year old boy about that stuff, i don't know any 7 year old girls tho. a couple weeks ago he said to me (re: holly valance's "kiss kiss kiss" video) "do you like the part where she's naked? i don't".

unknown or illegal user, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I should try to talk to my 7 year old sister about it. I know she like Sandy & Junior and she borrowed my Atomic Kitten album by herself(though she thought it was a Kelly Key album) wich is great cos sice we got a car with CD player all we listen when shes in it is Atomic Kitten!

Chupa-Cabras, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I would, but around our area they're all too busy smoking crack and throwing stones at passers-by, so I usually pass.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

my brother is eight - he claims to like the sex pistols. he doesn't like public image limited much though. he also says shakira is 'hot' and he likes incubus i think. my sister is 12 and likes destinys child. she ridicules what i listen to whenever possible.
